RIP Jonathan Nash. All those cliches: "he tells it like it is".. "has a wicked sense of humour"... "holds no prisoners"... and so on. I can't think of a fitting tribute to the gentleman gamer who was on the side of us readers, wary of parting with money for nothing. Or something. Bye, J. Nash.

Fishsta: Brilliant! Thanks for the effort. For what it's worth, my own story: I'm an American, now from California. My ancestors were Southworths from Samlesbury Hall, just east of Preston. (Descendants of Norman invaders who stole an Anglo Saxon estate, married Scots, etc.) (An aside: I visited there in 2023 and an astute young shop clerk said , "Wait, you're a Yank, ain't ye. Wha' t' hell are you in Preston for? Nobody ever comes 'ere" . . . I explained.) Anyhow, my ancestors came to Plymouth Colony in the 1620's but never quite settled down and by 1790 they were poor, illiterate farmers in Vermont when the first U.S. census was taken. Evidently they still had the Lancashire accent even then because, since they couldn't write their name, the census only heard "suth-herd" and wrote it down as "Southard", so now that's my last name. Does that make sense to you?

@@southbirdsouthbird thank you for the story! It's interesting how many name variations come from mistakes and language barriers. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Hey! So I actually own one of these machines, the "Screamer" chair version (mentioned in that article!), I'm currently working on restoring and modernising the internals to future-proof it, with the aim of having it back out into the public at some point! These machines die because most of the parts inside of them were built bespoke, even the vibration motors, so replacing parts is expensive if not impossible. That's why I'm redoing the electronics in mine to use modern, open hardware and software, nothing proprietary, with the aim of making a conversion "kit" for these so that any of these machines could be retrofitted with new bits to get them working again. I was just at St Anne's Pier this weekend, and the machine seems to have gone now! I want to get in touch with them to see what they're doing with it and if they'll let me buy it to restore, fingers crossed! Central Pier in Blackpool only recently got rid of their Shocker, too, which I believe was the last remaining one in Blackpool! You're right, there's still one at the Lyon's Amusements in Towyn (a Raging Ape), and I believe there's another one of those at Skegness Pier. There's still a few down south, a Shocker in Southend-on-Sea at Electric Avenue, a Screamer at Circus Circus in Great Yarmouth, a more modern Elaut version at Caesar's Palace in Great Yarmouth, and finally Mr P's Amusements in Bognor Regis still has an awesome Addams Family Generator. I'm sure there's a few more elsewhere, but those are the ones I'm aware of right now, they still occasionally appear on eBay and they always sell! Anyway, if you have any questions about how these things work or anything like that, feel free to let me know! Cheers :)

Very good. I find it fascinating how there are so many different dialects, even in the one county - Lancashire. Here’s just a couple more phrases that I picked up when I lived in Wigan: Keep going with th’ead down. (Keep walking with your head down). Shall we go tattas and buy some Cockoh? (it’s something you would say to a small child, which means: Shall we go for a walk, and buy some sweeties?) I’m not sure if the spelling of the sweeties, hopefully someone will fill this one in at some other time.

I’m from Appalachia region of Kentucky in the U.S. and we have our own unique accent. I would have difficulty communicating in this part of England if I were to visit, but likewise they would most likely have a difficult time understanding my accent as well.

If I wasn’t reading the rubbish underneath. I could understand everything the Lancashire man said. I wonder how much it has changed since the 19th century! This is where part of my family hails from. What towns does Lancashire include? My great grandfather mention something about Gorton in his family autobiography, Kenyon Lane, Church Road, Earlestown….
@Fishsta10 ай бұрын
Your best bet is to go to the Gazetteer of British Place Names and search Lancashire, it should show you the whole county boundaries, but it'll include towns and cities like Warrington, Wigan, Liverpool, Barrow, Manchester, Preston, Chorley, Blackburn, Bolton, Blackpool, Southport etc.

I'm born and bred in Lancashire as are my kids. I told my daughter to "pop th kettle on"............ She told me i should have said "the" i was hurt and offended........i told her to tell me what she said again and i filmed her on my phone...... She said it's "put the kettle on, the way you say it is stupid" to say i was hurt is an understatement 😢

Famous line from a bloke who always just opened the door of the Stork pub....and looked around pretending to search for a mate.....but really he was checking to see how many in there he owed a pint to...."his shout"......he would yelll from the entrance......"Azzeebinin"!!!!! ha ha......too stingy to cough up for a few pints.

I think the 'fair play' campaign simply illustrated that people don't really understand how fruit machines work. The win is decided before the game even starts, what you do really makes very little difference. But its still a gamble, because you don't know how far that 'board' has pre-set it's willing to go. So the fact that some number gambles are technically 'unwinnable' in a certain game state, is really quite irrelevant. It's like with American slots, the win is decided the moment the player presses the button, the actual 'play out' of the reels or the subsequent feature is just purely for entertainment value. The only difference is they don't have numbers you go higher or lower than, but that's really just academic. If you really believed those numbers can be 'guessed right' - you're just naive or you've not played enough fruit machines to know how they work. So none of this was at all relevant. The guy was arguing about nothing, and the media just ran with it.
