Aldi’s Sour Cream & Onion potato crisps may have the savory seasoning, however the structural integrity required by a chip is a freshly fried Gaufrette (waffle cut) potato with Steak Tartare. I always have used Mareuil-sur-Aÿ village champagne (Billecart-Salmon or Marc Hebrart) with Tartare, and Gaufrettes. Adore your recipe take with the Aperol Rosita with Mandarin. Re: Rudy has an impressive palette for mimicking authentic mature bottles.

I recall when Petit Verdot from the Riverlands was the next big thing...and then vanished. I think it was the drought that killed hundreds and hundreds, probably thousands of acres of vines. I am a fan of that grape so it was sad for me. Fiano from Australia can be pretty impressive, thinking of Unico Velo.

Seeing Düsseldorf again reminds me of when we used to visit a ton! Hope you guys enjoyed the city, it feels kind of lame to say now when you've already left but if you're ever around again make sure to check out the Carlsplatz markt, some of my favorite and memorable wine/ food memories in Düsseldorf were from getting some good bottles of riesling with some fresh sashimi there. (also café de Bretagne on the same square is really nice for seafood!) great vids, cheers!

Thanks Brendan, an excellent interview. As a "senior" wine consumer, since the late '70's, it is interesting how one's own wine choices, and the industry dynamics interplay It would seem from Brian's perspective, become a viticulturist, not a winemaker. A very complex industry and invaluable opportunity to have a long form interview with one of Australia's wine greats. Interesting how Brian suggested that partners should offer more than just money, and wonderful that his choices helped mentor him in global wine marketing and distribution.

Speaking of Shiraz, I found a mature bottle of Cape d’Estaing Shiraz Kangaroo Island 2011, what fine well balanced wine, top flight! American importers do not receive much Sparkling Shiraz though. There’s a lingering guilt by association to Lambrusco by the Reunite brand, motto “Reunite over ice, So Nice!” Reunite is dreck wine if you recognize quality.

I was introduced to Petaluma brand by American importer Robert Chadderdon Selections NYC in 1985. What an eye opening wine experience Brian Croser brought from Australia. I had friends who claimed the bottles were dull compared to other Oz flashy buttery balls Chardonnay. I shared the distinction is the difference. So glad to see his mantra’s Quality is judged in the vineyard!

Just managed to find a bottle of Sailor Seeks Horse 2022 Pinot over here in the UK following this vid and a 2022 Tolpuddle Pinot whilst I was at it. Question for Brendan: I get why Shiraz from the Riverland and Barossa is still getting heavily oaked - it makes sense for large-scale, mass-produced wines where consistency is key year after year. But why, WHY do so many of the smaller producers in the Adelaide Hills insist on doing this to their Chardonnay?
@wineforthepeople
@wineforthepeople 10 күн бұрын
Because oak is seductive. It hides discretions - but also references higher-priced wines globally - allowing the winery to effectively market to a different crowd. Definitely some missed opportunities out there.
@nowaygardenhose
@nowaygardenhose 10 күн бұрын
@@wineforthepeople cheers Brendan. Agree with the missed opportunities. Some producers using old or no oak in the Hills are producing some bangers. The Hills need their own John Hughes but focusing on Chardonnay

he is saying, he didnt emulate Bordeaux and Burgundy and yet he says, we beat French to their own game. He and Australia did indeed emulate Bordeaux and other world regions. taking it further, one could argue, definition of “fine wine” is already rooted into emulating old world regions. no way around it. fascinating interview as always.

Frappato and Nero d’Avola are bed mates in the Sicilian Cerasuolo di Vittoria youthful fragrant supple reds; but the wine becomes thrilling at 5 -10 years age with funky fresh saddle leather, sea breeze, and garrigue aromas.

@pmbirmingham
@pmbirmingham 10 күн бұрын
@@wineforthepeople I think C.O.S. and Arianna Occhipinti’s wineries are the natural wine leaders for age-ability. I’ve been fortunate enough to taste 2001 through 2012 vintages, fresh is fruity exciting style 2 - 3 from vintage, but funky delicious aromas/flavors and textures reveal at 5 - 7 years, IMHO. Admittedly the ten year example was a bit fatigued.
