Lucas didn’t have the prequels written yet. He didn’t know that Padme dies in child birth. Leia couldn’t have remembered a few moments after being born. This explanation makes sense if you use the force as an explanation. Close enough. 😂

Rex being a prime example of a clone developing as a person throughout the war adds an interesting layer of narrative nuance, having served along side Anakin Skywalker, of all people. That it was Anakin's extra flourish of "regular people" that helped spark a deeper than usual bond of trust, respect and friendship between the two. Therefore, by extension, Rex had a hard time turning on any Jedi, such as Krell.
@SubtextMining11 күн бұрын
Yes, and Anakin later also regained his own humanity. In this way, Rex is an interesting parallel with Anakin, so to speak.

Interesting connection with the Clones and the Replicants from Bladerunner! With their experiences shaping who they are, and their choices defining their humanity.
@SubtextMining13 күн бұрын
Yeah, The Replicants don't have empathy, but Roy Batty in his final moments decided to save Deckard's life, even though Deckard was trying got kill him. His life experiences shaped who he was, and in the end he developed a certain kind of understanding of humanity of his own, and with it a flicker of empathy and appreciation for the lives of others.

Damn Subtext, this one is down right moving at times. Here's to the socially inept! Jar Jar's empathy driving him to ask Padme: "You think yousa people gonna die?" is very much the same moment from Parzival when the young knight ignores his social training, which instructed him not to ask unnecessary questions, resulting in him healing The Fischer King and his kingdom with this simple question: "What ails thee?" In other words, he is compassionate, and compassion is the energy binder that binds all the lifeforms together in symbiosis.

A great replacement for that epic blunder called Fart Siddifail. Yes, an epic blunder. A weak link, so much so, it's not even a link. Alas. I have always thought about Jar Jar exactly as the biding agent of Episode 1 (exactly the misfit that fits in) when I was shocked to know that there is some internet trend to hate Jar Jar because he is clumsy and annoying. Guess what, this an epitome of a nerd (you know, the person who jnow Star Wars world better than the real one). So why the hate? Jar Jar is one of the most realistic characters in Star Wars, not to mention his crucial role in the story that is well explained in the clip.

Sidenote on the shot with R2 electrocuting the Ewok: Not only could that be seen as foreshadowing The Emperor electrocuting Luke, but etymologically, the word Attack comes from graft/attach, and Clone comes from branch/stick. I always felt that Kenobi should have used a more flexible interpretation of his promise to Qui-Gon and just ensured that Anakin would be trained, but passed on to a more experienced Master, like Windu. Windu might have tried to find a way to get rid of Anakin though, which, for all we know, might have made the situation even worse.
@SubtextMining2 ай бұрын
Obi-Wan could've. Though I think the idea was, since by the time Qui-Gon died, Anakin wasn't allowed into the Jedi Order, and Obi-Wan would be the most invested in Anakin and in Qui-Gon's hope in him, even if it meant going against the Council and training him apart from the Order. That's a big ask for a rando. About Windu, Council members don't normally train Padawans, but there are exceptions. Ultimately however, who ever trained Anakin, there would still be Palatine's grooming to factor in.
@nickford53472 ай бұрын
@@SubtextMining what bothers me the most about this topic is that it's another non-decision by the Jedi. Obi-Wan is quite literally the least experienced Master in the universe and the council responds to him making a promise with "I guess it's out of our hands and not our problem." It's this kind of inertia that leads me to feel that the Order deserves to fall. At it's worst, this decision strikes me on a meta level as the writers saying "this is the story so this is the way it has to be."

Great analysis. I saw the parallels between the prequels and Return of the Jedi, but I have never thought in detail about the first act of the movie.
@nickford53472 ай бұрын
My head canon has considered how the prophecy paralyzed the Jedi. By the time of the prequels the Jedi seem sclerotic and lacking purpose. Some are willing to believe the prophecy while others aren't and still others are somewhere in between. This space of doubt about how to handle the situation gives their leadership space to be purely reactive and in a constant state of introspection. They are aware that a powerful dark side user is gaining power but do all but nothing except observation for years. That some of them had faith that the chosen one was with them played into their passivity.
@SubtextMining2 ай бұрын
Good way to put it. And it works organically, in that one brilliant part of the Sith hiding for so long, was that without them around, the Jedi lacked any stiff competition to keep them on their toes, which allowed for them to rest on their laurels and become complacent & overconfident. And when the Sith returned, a prophesied one in their midst got them assuming the good guys were just bound to win.
@nickford53472 ай бұрын
While I support "freedom of speech" conceptually I would like the phrase "chosen one" to be banned from all non-comedy entertainment.
@SubtextMining2 ай бұрын
Haha! It can be overused, and some were put off by its use in Star Wars. But at the same time, there's something about it's pulpy quality, and also the mythological roots that go back to the dawn of man, that make it work for me. And I find the psychological notion that we're all the "chosen one" in our own story interesting to think about. And Anakin's journey is basically a psychological journey we all go through, both individually and collectively, many times.
@nickford53472 ай бұрын
Good analysis. I feel as though when I first watched ROTJ I was too young to understand how inexperienced and fallible Luke was. It's only as I'm older that it is clear. Of course much of the subsequent content has shown that Jedi can be fallible and prone to overestimating themselves.
@SubtextMining2 ай бұрын
Thanks! And same here. Characters like Luke are timeless because of how human and relatable they are. And Star Wars films are the gift that keep on giving. As you grow older you see and relate to the other layers more and more.

Of course the line is cringe. It is supposed to be. Anakin is not the smooth flirting type. He is just young and very in love and being unexperienced talk cringy things. It makes the viewer feel a bit uncomfortable?! Well, that's the point because is like he is feeling at the moment. It is even cute, obviously even for Padme, because she responds to this. Great video, as always.
@SubtextMining3 ай бұрын
Right, This is a good illustration of how Anakin always goes for what he wants, even if he's not sure what he's doing, or sure of what the consequences will be. his first attempt failed, but for Padme he was willing to change and be better...

Luke made promises that he was able to keep, he was always there for his friends, and he did return to Dagohba to try to complete his training with Yoda. And he proved that Padme had been right about Anakin when she felt the good in him. You need to do some videos about Luke and his journey and his connection to his father (Anakin) and his mother (Padme).

It’s too bad that Obi Wan and the other Jedi didn’t have as much faith in the prophecy and in Anakin that Qui Gon did? Qui Gon was the last true Jedi because he followed the will of the force, he understood that Jedi are supposed to care, and to have compassion.
