I have a little tidbit on the flipside of re-edited films post-9/11…I was 10 y.o. that year and a big fan of the PowerPuff Girls. PPG had a big origin story movie come out in 2002. On one hand, it’s an extension of the tv show’s cartoon action, fights, and drama set in the fictitious metropolis of Townsville. While cartoony and make-believe, a YT commentary I came across a while ago noted it was still in the shadow of 9/11, and mildly criticized/less popular for the “unscrubbed” violence in a family-oriented film. Show creator Craig McCracken did say at one point after the that he wished the movie was toned a little lighter and sillier.

Commenting so the algorithm gives me more niche deep dives like this instead of the random internet drama of the week. 🙏🏾🙏🏾

9/11 also brought my chemical romance into existence gerard way was sitting in a office building, looking out the window when he saw the attack happened which made him rethink his life. he reached out to people from school and eventually formed the band which the name he gotten from his brother who also joined the band. the three cheers for sweet revenge album cover was made by gerard himself and fun fact, gerard was actually a fan of comics and he himself made comics, the umbrella academy! he even pitched a show once to a company, i forget the name of it though. but yah, gerard way gaming :3

I’m South African born in 1997, so was very young and far away when this happened. When I was a little older and learned about 9/11, I asked my parents if it had an impact on them at all, being so far away. Straight away they said, “We were scared that WWIII was about to start.” Even all the way in South Africa, it was worrying. Insane.

I was born seven years after 9/11, and i’ve always known what 9/11 was. I knew that it was a bad event but i didn’t think it was THAT bad. I used to make jokes about it, but i never actually knew just how tragic it was until i saw footage of people jumping off the building, and heard the sound of them landing on the ground from the inside of the buildings. I learned this just two nights ago. I’ve lived my entire life completely apathetic of this. And now i’m seeing that there was a time in america where people felt genuine safety, and peace, and community. There wasn’t major security in the airports. There weren’t bitter newscasters. There wasn’t constant fear of the American government. People were happy. I’m realizing that there was this whole other world that existed just 24 years ago. I’m realizing that this wasn’t just a gradual shift in culture, but a huge sudden shatter of what everybody knew. I wish i never made those jokes. I only ever looked at 9/11 as the planes and the towers. I never put the innocent souls who suffered immeasurable agony into the equation. I wish I could take every single little joke, or jab back

I remember the first plane hitting, thinking it was a drunk pilot and being angry that my day off from work was ruined because I planned to watch trash TV all day and I knew it would be on all day long... then the 2nd plane hit and I realized the deal.

Vince McMahon kept the show going when a wrestler died in ring. Of course they brag about having a big attendance 2 days after 9/11.

I really think there's no better way to explain the insane nearly overnight shift in attitude than to compare the two most popular action shows of their respective decade: watch one episode of Xena: Warrior Princess then watch one episode of 24.

There's so many things in shows like zoom and Arthur that I was watching at that age of seven and eight when 9/11 that I just didn't understand where connected to that but I'm starting out and I'm really excited to go back and hopefully find these episodes on the internet somewhere God this is such phenomenal research

Like I remember when it happened I had never heard of the World Trade Center and honestly I was just curious about it We lived three miles outside of Chicago and the Sears Tower thought it was the next Target understandably I mostly learned about it from this published book that time magazine and life published and I would just read it over and over and over and over and over but honestly 9:10 and 9/12 as a second grader were the same to me everyone was concerned about being popular and dressing in the cutest limited to clothes and of course our parents did a wonderful job of sheltering us from their fears but do you remember that they were like okay we're at war and we didn't understand the difference between Saddam Hussein and bin laden and stuff like that We didn't understand the difference between Iraq and Afghanistan because nobody told us about what was going on in current events and I am 30 and still only sort of understand it which is actually pretty frustrating but yeah for the people who were a little bit older than second graders during 9/11 those millennials that's our Vietnam

This is so incredibly well done I was seven almost eight when 9/11 happened and was in second grade and I knew what happened but I didn't quite understand it and I knew we went to war but I didn't quite understand the nuances of it so I'm 30 now in 2024 and I guess there's so many songs that I just didn't realize were response to 9/11 like obviously the Toby Keith song and American idiot but all the others went straight over my head This is phenomenal and you should get like an Emmy for it or something You've done a wonderful job. Post 9/11 was millennials Vietnam and while I'm on the younger end of millennials there are a lot of differences between myself and a Gen z person 5 years younger just because I remember 9/11 I wasn't even in New York I was in Chicago but I just could sense how scared everyone was. This is so well done I think I'm actually going to send it to my conservative white boomer dad. That's how good you covered everything a seemingly unbiased factual manner.

for years after it happened, whenever i watched a movie or tv show that was produced before 9/11 and included an image of the towers, it was like a slap in the face. but it gradually got better. now, when i see an episode of one of the earlier seasons of friends and it includes an establishing shot between scenes of the towers, it still tugs at my heart a little.

Kids media thematically have the handicap of the “decade delay”, which is why the 1990s still ran on 1980s Cold War era tropes shown on shows like Sonic the Hedgehog and Swat Kats. The 1990s didn’t really start until SpongeBob, which have the same tropes and story beats as Seinfeld. This means that kids media during and after 9/11 more or less was a distraction steeped in 1990s irony and reality, thematically speaking. This is where the “lol random” humor of kids media take form. Of course, the exceptions of kids media embracing the new edginess of the 2000s are present, but they were flops at worst (Loonatics Unleashed) or an odd curiosity at best (American Dragon: Jake Long). I’d argue that it wasn’t until Adventure Time that we got an apt response to 9/11 in kids media and at that point, we were already into recession territory, which saw the mainstream getting on the indie sleaze bandwagon, birthing the hipsters.
