Goldy told me he'd be trippin balls back in the day, but the only thing that could reel him in was John's guitar...Steppenwolf always had the greatest pocket as long as Goldy and Jerry were there holding it down....Great band...Just wish Steppenwolf Mk 1 could have held it together a little longer -Funky rock band...Loved em

Noticing that VT-40 behind Larry Byrom - having owned an Ampeg V-2 head in the past - I would not have wanted to be their roadie. Ampegs are legendary for being extremely heavy. That thing makes me want to run for the Ibuprofen just looking at it.

One of my favorite albums of all time ..still play it regularly ...every track is perfect ( might be hard to get away with Ballcrusher nowadays !....I was an innocent 12 yr old back then when my older brought the record did know what was going on in that one till a lot later)...Renegade is one of the best songs from that era .

If only ... I am sure many, like me, wished this is how CCR went into the 1970s instead of that rubbish MARDI GRAS. I was so excited to get Mardi Gras after Pendulum, but I was so shattered as a 17yo. I threw it across my room. Pendulum was bad enough after the influence of that Booker T concert with the wailing organ, but my god, what crap Mardi Gras was - except Someday Never Comes. All it really needed were some good rollicking CCR licks with some half way decent lyrics and they ALL could contributed. Band was great - Fogerty still is, but he is an egotistical nightmare at times. Stu played ok guitar noise, but how much better for a John version of the guitar work. As a three piece they were just distorted noise and only played for 50 minutes - much of it taken up by Chooglin and Grapevine. I was so disappointed with the concert in 1972. They played like it was the end and I swear they used a backing tape because Up the Bend started like a 31/4 speed instead of 15 speed and I distinctly saw John get annoyed. It wasn't until 30 years later John came back to my town. Loved Tom's work on this - you can hear how he changed his vocal style from the Golliwogs to sound more like John. Why didn't John used that? I hope playing with his children has made him a bit more mellow, but I doubt it. Anyway Love ya Tom. (Australia)

Legendary band. I had the great fortune of finding Ron Hurst locally when I looked for a drum teacher. That was in 2014. He has been teaching me once a week for the last ten years. I couldn't have found a better teacher or made a better friend.

Hippo Stomp, from the album Steppenwolf 7. I bought that album when it was first released. I had already been a Steppenwolf fan at that time. They had solidified themselves with their "Big Three": Born to be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, and The Pusher. What so many people never realized that the band had an enormous catalog of music behind those three songs. Music that, in my opinion, far outshines the Big Three. I believe that no matter which version of the band there was, Steppenwolf 7 was the best album they EVER produced.

As far as talent goes, I don’t think you can beat this version of Steppenwolf. Guitarist Larry Byrom had been with them since “Monster” and George Biondo (on his first album) was the best bassist they had found so far (Nick St Nicholas was an interesting character, but not much of a musician). Although it lacked the hits, “Seven” is musically the most mature album they put out. Songs like this one, “Snow-blind Friend,” “Foggy Mental Breakdown,” and “Renegade” are at the top of the group’s creativity. Question: can anyone identify the brand or model of bass that Biondo is playing? I can’t.

You know John Kay's history....born in Germany blind his Mom took him thru the wall. Went to Canada...met wife up there and I was so lucky to see him in Fresno one year on my birthday. Still amazed how he would throw mic up and catch it. Great book to read.

I am “ only” 62 so I was a bit late but had a relative 6 years my senior. He was more like a brother than an uncle. Turned me on to all kinds of 60’s “stuff “ very early. About 15 years ago i stopped at our local greasy spoon and there sat John Kay in the flesh and as outnof pocket as one would ever imagine in the hyper rural , extremely clannish , Hillsboro TN. Spoke briefly and was on my way. Very cordial and approachable cat.
