@LaidBackHomesteader5 күн бұрын
Yes and if that doesn't work I'm thinking of welding angle iron onto the rollers to crimp the grass. Good or bad idea?
@gregganderson14546 күн бұрын
Yeah, Nugget! The birds are looking good. The paint job on your container is still looking great. I didn’t know people rolled their fields. When you say ‘rush’, are those shrubs or some kind of weeds? Great video.
@LaidBackHomesteader6 күн бұрын
Gregg, the rush is a weed found in heavy damp ground. My two fields are full of it. I strim it so it doesn't go to seed but I'm hoping the roller will crimp the stem in turn feed the soil. At the base there is big clumps of vegetation because its not being managed. In time it shouldn't be much of a problem if I stay on top of it. Nugget will soon be moving to nanny's house and ill get another batch in the incubator.

The rush plants are there because the soil is of poor quality. When I say i'm feeding the soil its with the plan to enrich the soil quality creating habitat for worms etc. Not enough area for a pond. I'm going to catch water from the roof of my shipping container within the next 12 months. It will water animals and the garden. If I put the proper filters on it I'll be able to drink it!
@laraquatelli35066 күн бұрын
Ach,wat did I say about Nugget and hen pecking order last week? Ger some Bach Flower Rescue Remedy and ma can put a wee drop in his drinking water as he,ll be traumatised and that,ll aid his recovery. Get a sheep dog rather than stressing the pregnant ewe with your big boy toy. Make hay from the grass rather than rolling it.That,ll feed the cows. You have so many assets. ❤.
@LaidBackHomesteader6 күн бұрын
If I had a use for hay i'd already of had it mowed Lara. You were right about nugget. He was only starting to get moving when I seen them pecking at his wing so I had to intervene. I'm keeping him in beside the others so he can here them. When he goes to nanny's house there are other chickens, laying hens that will keep him right. Thanks

@@LaidBackHomesteader what will the sheep eat in winter if not hay?
@LaidBackHomesteader6 күн бұрын
@@laraquatelli3506 They will be on grass all year. Last winter they went to a friends land for two months because I ran out of grass. Dam Suffolk's (5 sheep) kept breaking threw the poly wire and walked what grass i'd left into the soil! The reason he had grass is that they farm cows and they are too heavy for the fields during winter. This makes too much mud so they be held in a barn for a bit.

Have your gate when it swings shut that it rest on a support. Nothing worse than a new hung level gate & someone climbs over it & makes it sag. Also puts less pressure on hanger post. Tomato plants outside I cut the growing tip out when they form the 1st flowering truss. Did that last year and it worked well.

Now you say that i can see 3 dudes using it as a swing, lol. The sheep have the old post broken already, just leaning against the gate. Another item added to the to-do list 😩 When I get a new post in I'll leave it with so the gate can be closed properly. Does cutting the top off help make more flower buds and then tomatoes? Thanks for advice TC

I have found beer traps Guinness is working with the slugs for us. I hope I haven't kyboshed myself now. Planted a load of potatoes in no dig beds and using the ruth stout method. The no dig ones are up, the ruth stout are sprouting but not threw the hay yet and every time I pull it back for gawk I find so many slugs. I was listening to a permaculture guy in the UK he said it's not a slug problem its a deficiency of ducks. Not so easy to just go buy ducks though. Need fencing and a house for them. We have a fox at the end of one of our fields and have even seen it at 12pm in the day. I'm afraid the ducks or chickens wouldn't last pissing time if we don't prep and prep properly first.
@LaidBackHomesteaderАй бұрын
Them paint mixer containers are working a treat for me. Sheltering the plant and making the inside warmer too. Its a cheap and cheerful method. I have thought about getting ducks too. My upper field has a foxes highway running through it Elizabeth. If slugs become a big problem I'm going to make a hut, over the pond, so that the ducks will enter from waterside keeping them safe while there inside. Sleep outside would have serious consequences lol

Especially if you have heavy machinery, used oil is a great, inexpensive, and proven method to help keep wood posts protected. Oh, it is also organic XD Also, if you have any scrap metal or can find sheets of lead, you can cut hats and nail them to the top to help keep rain off of the top.
