I went to UT Austin in the later half of the 1990's. I enjoyed it there, but I moved to Chicago when I graduated in 1999 and I have lived there ever since. In Chicago I used to commute to my job driving from 6 AM to start my day at 7 am every morning. The return trip was 1.5 hours. The interstate I drove on to commute went past a rock quarry, and the air was filled with a nasty smell from factories and railroads that were also nearby. One summer my car's AC gave out, so I was forced to roll down my windows and tolerate the nasty smells. On top of that I drove a manual transmission car in stop and go traffic, which is a trial of endurance let me tell you. I doubt that commuters in Austin have to deal with a drive like that. Honestly though, that is just one stretch of interstate out of many such roads in Chicago. My other experiences with driving in Chicago have been more normal. That was some years ago, but now I live in a suburb just north of the city proper, I work fully remote for a company based in another state, and I am slowly adding to my company sponsored 401K. The city of Chicago is fairly liberal and I judge that to be a good thing. All of the things that loonie conservatives claim will happen that are bad really arent a problem here. The downtown is thriving, public transportation including buses and trains are safe, affordable, and convenient, and yet unions are strong and respected. In fact, things like the movement toward charter schools, that conservatives love, are being proven to not work. Austin may have some growing pains, but I'm sure eventually it can be worked out.

I would bet my next paycheck that every person you featured talking to the council in support of this - would be angry to hear this only got them access to a $350,000 house a little closer to town. Not affordable housing. They are useful because they are ignorant.

If laws were not so strict about tiny homes and property was not so expensive and people could afford a fresh start then a majority would not be homeless
@nikkiarmstrong39916 күн бұрын
Homeless are not the problem not being able to get them the help they need is. Drugs, alcohol, are not the main problems. With robots taking human jobs are. Also, 2 major problems are inflation and stability.

I think there is a sense home. People get used to a certain lifestyle. Personally, I would like more land. Most of the people leaving California are pro gun conservatives. You can insulate your house for summer. Wear more clothes in the winter. Tacos for breakfast sounds great. Texas would be a place i would consider.

I willl attest to one thing, Texas's sick anti-0abortion law almost killed my niec in June 2024. My niece had an unexpected pregnancy, which she wanted. At about 4 months the fetus lost its heartbeat. The state of Texas will only allow a medication "purge" of the dying fetus not a D&C. She was given three rounds of medication before her body began to expel the dead tissue. By this point she had become infected and was going Septic. The Doctors put her in the ICU and completely transfused her entire blood to save her life, She was in ICU 6 days and almost died as a result. F--k Texas and its Women hating Fake Christian Polices

When you have an influx of people on property values go up, you have the real estate bubble, that we’ve seen burst so many times. Or you just can’t afford to live there I stopped liking Austin many years ago because of the traffic. It is horrible.

We longed to move to Austin in the early 1980s. Back then, Austin had a peaceful, almost sleepy small town feel to it despite the fact that it is the state capital and home to Texas's flagship state university. Alas, jobs were not easy to come by in those days, and we gave up on our dream of moving there. We were very fortunate, however, to escape Houston, which in my opinion is arguably the worst city to live in in Texas thanks to the lack of zoning, the crime, the unbelievably bad traffic, and the disgraceful air and ground pollution, not to mention the border problem which as already long since out of control by the early 1980s. We moved to clean, green Tulsa which offered a really good quality of life. Unfortunately, Tulsa has gone much the same way as Austin.... Anyway, I visited Austin again in the early 2000's (actually stayed in (Round Rock), and the city no longer felt the same AT ALL. It had become a boom town reminiscent of Houston in the 1980s. Whilst Austin still has much to recommend it, I would not be interested in living there now absent some great personal incentives. Personally, I like the OLD, smaller character homes in well established neighbourhoods, but as in Fort Worth, Dallas, and other cities, those types of properties have become gentrified and the cost to rent or to buy is outrageous. I am retired now and sometimes think about relocating to a small town in Arkansas or Mississippi, or Maine, aka heaven on earth.

Austin is conservative because it caters to moneyed white interests. Always has, always will. It just tells you how regressive the other parts of the state are that people think ATX is liberal or progressive. Laughable. It's the Las Vegas of the confederacy.
