I'm 50/50 on this one. I have discovered a few new amazing artists by asking in a record store or bar what they are playing. However, I also hate it when they play something I don't like - which is common. I hate it even more when it's played really loud. But the thing I hate most of all is Muzak played in bland department stores or hotels, and when you are on hold for ages on the phone to a call centre. 🙄
@louisv51165 күн бұрын
yes, several shops play their music much too loud! Sometimes the music they play is awful screaming rock music. The sound that annoys me more is the sound hurried and nervous customers produce when they are going through a bin of records covered in thin plastic sleeves.
@jamesgriffithsmusic5 күн бұрын
This is something that's now ingrained in the culture...not just record shops but everywhere. For years I used to enjoy a swim in our local leisure centre pool, but in the last couple of years they've started piping music onto the poolside and also into the changing room areas. It wouldn't be so bad if it was really quiet or not terrible music, but it's actually quite loud and really horrible chart-y sort of music. A few years back I actually cancelled my gym membership at a different place after I turned the crap music down myself and one of the attendants came in shortly afterwards to turn it back up again and tell me that customers weren't allowed to mess around with the TV. A word of warning, they blast music at X-Records.📢😭
@brians1325 күн бұрын
In defence of that, I used to work as a pool lifeguard when I was a teenager. Have you any idea of how boring it is sitting in a high chair watching people swim up and down for hours. Choosing some music to put on and listen to helped keep me sane. For obvious reasons, we can't listen on headphones so it had to go on over the building's speakers.
@jamesgriffithsmusic5 күн бұрын
@ Fair enough but keep it out of the changing rooms. Also play good music not crappy chart stuff.
@LPCLASSICAL5 күн бұрын
crappy chart stuff to him might be good music. That's the whole issue. Music preference is subjective and even if you like the music you probably want to hear it when YOU want to hear it which I guess is not when you are swimming up and down in a pool. In the gym they might as well just play Eye Of The Tiger on repeat all day.
@jamesgriffithsmusic5 күн бұрын
@ I don't think the 'boredom' justification holds water (excuse the pun). There are plenty of people who do boring office jobs and have to get on with it without music blaring. In a public facility like a swimming pool, it's the customers' needs and comfort that should override the staff's when it comes to things like piped music. So I pay to use the facilities and am forced to listen to music because the lifeguard, who's being paid, is bored? Sorry, doesn't cut it.

Remember when you could listen to records in the shops on headphones to see (hear?) if you liked the music, at least no one else was disturbed. Music (or any noise) doesn’t have to be too loud before hearing starts to be damaged, perhaps earplugs are in order 🎶

Music is bliss when it is what you want - when it is not - it borders on harassment. If I walked into a shop and it was playing one of the greatest slow movements ever composed - Mozart's Clarinet Concerto - I would walk out and come back when it is finished. I can sympathize after a fashion; still, that view is approaching apostasy! 😃 Had it been the approach of places I frequented, it likely would have resulted in my not becoming acquainted with a number of works, Songs of the Auvergne for example (and bands, eg Stereolab) I truly love! Reminds me rather of a bookstore owner in Nashville I knew who limited the time he "allowed" patrons to read his wares! On the other hand, I knew the owner of a classical CD shop - a very good one in Rochester NY - who feared he was going mad from listening to classical music for ten hours every day, non-stop.

@@LPCLASSICAL Ha-ha, that would be a fun time; sounds like a Monty Python sketch! No, the owners conveyed the impression of not wanting you to touch their precious books at all! In fact, the number of warning signs they posted about the shop was nothing short of oppressive and made me not want to buy ANYTHING. My comparison was intended to convey a business situation where customers were deprived of what might be considered the norm and you must admit that background music (loud or soft) might be considered the norm in record shops. You may not like it, but you do have the option of not going in them (and as you note, there's rarely anything of interest there anyway besides the pleasure of the hunt).

Stuart gets proper grumpy around the 18 minute mark, but watch and learn, as he makes a lot of sense. Record shop owners who put grubby and damaged records in the racks are wasting everyone's time. Similarly, top dollar pricing is counterproductive. I can gauge the quality of a record shop inside the first five minutes....look for a bargain bin, a bulk deal on offer (5 for the price of 4), and a close inspection of three or four albums gives me an idea of what the owner considers VG, excellent, etc. The shops that pass this test see me on a regular basis; the ones that don't see me once, and once only. Also, a friendly demeanour helps. The worst are those that bury their face in the computer, listing their good stuff on Discogs, while you sort through the shite in the shop.

I agree with some of your choices - Beethoven's 5th is an obvious piece with lots of oomph. The Ring I disagree as it is a piece for advanced listeners to grapple with and even then you need to get into the storyline etc to really appreciate it. I would go for the orchestral highlights - Ride of the Valkyries, the opening to Die Walkure is phenomenal but that doesn't last long. Picture At An Exhibition yes - brilliant from the 1st note and you don't have to wait for it to get going. Mahler's 2nd etc. You have ignored the classical and baroque eras thought I understand why. The assumption is that rock fans want to find the similar features of music they enjoy in classical and you may be right in most cases. I may well do a 10 for pop fans myself.
