Extreamly peak content, i enjoyed all of this. I should of gone with my guts years ago and just make my own filter.

if no one is getting sick in the house due to vacuuming without a filter, how necessary is it to use a HEPA vacuum? asking as a broke college student :)

hey man i just wanted to say i appreciate your vids and you should keep making them. i recently went down the humidifier rabbit hole. i know over humidity and mold are your mortal enemies, but still would like to get your take on humidifiers, would love to see a whole video dedicated to them. I just settled on a cheapo honeywell steamer because the evap and ultrasonic ones seemed like unhygienic nightmares. but thats just a standalone unit, i know you do whole house solutions for things typically. anyway just wanted to say i appreciate your vids, i thought of you first when i wanted to look into humidifiers, you are better than the big channels.

That’s very kind, thank you for that comment! You’re in luck. I already do have a video on humidification! It’s called “how healthy is humidifying really?”

You have any thoughts on taking a HEPA filter and replacing it with a MERV13 filter? I assume it wouldn’t be ideal because of the smallish surface area but wouldn’t it increase the CADR and be a lot cheaper filter replacement especially if you cut it from a really large filter? Great video by the way.

I am just another guy with allergies. I have done research myself a few times and it was not fun. If you are in an extremely polluted city a prefilter can save you from replacing the HEPA filter so frequently because of large particles like strands of fiber are captured by the prefilter. I replace the cheap prefilter every 3 months. I replace the more expensive HEPA filter every 2-3 years. The cubic feet per minute (cfm) of the air cleaner blower/fan you need will depend on the size of the space you are trying to clean and how quickly you want to feel relief. The higher the CFM of the fan the more air exchanges per hour. The more Air Changes per Hour the faster you will feel relief. There is always more polluted air coming into the house through the fresh air vent. It should be given another name when it is the chief source of pollution. How to Calculate the Required CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) : CFM = Room Length x Width x Height x (Air Changes per Hour) / 60 min. Examples for living area 25ft by 30ft with 14ft ceiling: CFM: (25 X 30 X 14 X 2) / 60 = 350 CFM [2 exchanges per hour] CFM: (25 X 30 X 14 X 3) / 60 = 525 CFM [3 exchanges per hour] CFM: (25 X 30 X 14 X 4) / 60 = 700 CFM [4 exchanges per hour] CFM: (25 X 30 X 14 X 5) / 60 = 875 CFM [5 exchanges per hour]

What was the total cost of making this filter? I'm consider this or making the Nukit Tempest. I do believe your method would be better for a larger space. My house is about 800sqft. So I'd like to set at the midpoint from the living space and intake for heating ventilation. That way it's cleaning the air as it circulates through the house. Edit: I'm looking for another fan atm. I'm curious if buying the same fan at around $150 is worth it. Considering many people are probably only running on mid settings, maybe 800 to 1000 cfm. Likely use smaller filters so It doesn't stand as tall.

I have a constant cough I think it's from running my furnace. Do you have any information of mold collecting in ventilation? Appreciate your work I'll be following you

HEPA Filters are better for smaller scale's though where the CADR rating is low, however for bigger rooms it's often better to do the merv 13 approach since it's better then no filtering and is much cheaper then buying a big HEPA and big fan which has the high CADR rating like the merv-13 setup.

@RandyFricke3 күн бұрын
As much as I hate being "that guy", I think it's important to note that the standard (Lasko-style) box fan is not designed to run in a horizontal orientation. Gravity will pull any lubricant from the bearings putting more stress on the motor and making the motor more prone to wearing out faster or, on older units, seize up altogether. I just lay the filter against the back of the fan and let it suck up against the back side of the fan on its own. No tape needed. The frame of the filter sits nicely on the fan's footies and as long as the fan is on, the filter will stay in place. The most important part is to be sure the airflow arrows on the filter are pointing in the direction of the airflow. I just don't think it's necessary to do that whole boxy thing with 4 filters. You're spending more money than you need to and you're really not gaining that much in filtration.

I built your design and used polystyrene 3/4 inch insulation cut the hole just big enough to drop the fan in snug... No strings attached 😂 The fan is not flush with the top but is working perfectly. Thanks for the great idea as we have 2 very dusty birds and I hope that this improves the air quality around here.

I would recommend flush cutters instead of scissors to cut the bands. Prevents leaving some above the buckle that can cut you.

I didn’t use scissors, I used aviation snips. But yes, flush cutters would be even better.

I'm curious why you chose the 1% metric. While interesting, the most extreme 3 or 4 days of the year might vary wildly from year to year and be tolerable simply due to the short duration. OFf the top of my head I'd imagine the 10 or 15% most extreme EXCLUDING the 1% most extreme would give a meaningful indication of what residents have to be prepared to deal with every year

You did not try "every box fan on the market" Air filters have to be replaced periodically. So you're going to rebuild this box periodically? Like every other month?

Hi Healthy home guide! Thank You SO much for this video. It's thorough and very helpful. I'm currently in Los Angeles, my house is safe and several miles from the Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires, but I'm afraid of micro particles, asbestos and lead, etc. I'm glad I found you before I bought an HEPA filter air purifier. Could you recommend a clean air kits device for a one bedroom Spanish bungalow? Living-room and one bedroom? I don't think I have time to build it myself unless you recommend one of your DIY? Do you think these devices would work for after wildfires pollutants? I'm having a hard time trusting AQI apps test... Many thanks for taking the time to answer this.

I'm at minute 15, and have a few comments up until now: 1. ONE MERV13 filter is half the price of an HEPA Air Purifier in my country (Argentina), which means it's more expensive to build a CR Box here (way more expensive). 2. What happens if the polluted air input in the room is significantly lower, for a 3x4 meters room for instance ? May HEPA filters be better at those circumstances ? 3. It doesn't seem that the studies are considering external fans in the same room, making air flow significantly higher. What happens if you put the HEPA filter near a fan ?

wait, a 70degree vented air passing by 0 deg air will mix to make 35degrees MAX, this is 100% efficiency... right? that is a terrible draft in the winter!!! PLUS you realize the cold temp leaking from the box itself is artificially raising your efficiency rating right? why dont any of these erv vids tell everyone erv's are an energy wasting boondoggle?

Hepa is an electret material, they crystallize the fiberglass under voltage, so they hold a static charge. Small germs like pollen spores and viruses that stick to you because of static charge, instead are caught by hepa

You should maybe get a thermal camera to check for cold spots in your walls which can result in condensation. If that part of the wall is not able to dry out then there will be moisture build up and mold as a result. There are ones you can connect to your phone now as well that's a bit cheaper. You should also get a pin less moisture checker that can check moisture furter inside a wall. Getting some mold test kits could also be an idea. The cheaper version would be to get or make several petri dishes by getting the plastic containers for it and make your solution with agar agar or gelatine etc. Place one or more in all rooms. Leave open for a few hours or a day. Close it and leave until you see if mold starts to build up. Don't forgett to leave one without exposing ot to air after sterilisation to use as a controll to make sure your base isn't contaminated. You will slways have some growth in them but you can identify the diferent type of mold by how they grow and color usually. Black is usually bad while white is usually not as bad. Ps. If you are very allergic to black mold you should start to check if things you eat contains citric acid. At least in the US I know it is made by genetically modified black mold to produce citric acid that is later seperated from the mold. For most people there are not enough spors and trace supstance from the black mold to effect you but for people that is extra sensitive it will still have an effect on you. You might already know this and avoid it but if you don't then it doesn't hurt to bring this info to you or anyone else that might read this. Hope you will get better.

I don't know if you are renting or owning your house but if you own your house it might be an idea to look up if cutting a hole through your floor for the intake of stale inside air to through it drawing air from the lower floor could be a better idea or maybe the reverse routing the fresh air downstairs to get a preassure difference that draws the air through your house instead of you having to use fans to push it around as much. Replacing the flexible ductings yo rigid ones might also be an idea to reduce drag in the ducts. You could maybe even reduce the cost by reusing the insulated sleave from your flexible ducts and slide the ridgid duct through it when you pull out the inside flexible duct by attaching one end of the flexible duct to the ridgid one pulling the ridgid one through with the flexible one.
