So the read is it's pretty much a normal alpine turn until the part where you would kinda pick up your uphill ski to keep it parallel, at which point you ease the uphill ski into parallel by dippin' into the tele stance. So is the point of the stance to spread out the supporting edge in the crotch of the turn to create a more robust suspension out of your body position? I just picked up tele gear... it's September, but I'm stoked to learn. It's gonna be fun.

Eventually you get rid of the snowplow stance to start and keep skis parallel but using the tele stance throughout

I'm having trouble with my kick. I have marwe skis, and madshus boots, which don't have much ankle support, I think. Do I need carbon cuffs as well?
@k2nicol
@k2nicol 2 ай бұрын
Usually with classic ankle support is less important than with skating...but you do need some support. I tend to use combi boots since it covers both techniques with one boot..less gear and cost needed. You could try our on line roller ski sessions if you want some feedback on your skiing. If you try the cuffs let me know how they work

I noticed while you are standing on the balance board, your heal is positioned at the far edge. I bought one recently, and wanted to know what part of my foot should I have centered on the board. Should I have the dead center of my foot on the centerpoint, or should I align the balls of my feet with it, etc. Im trying to develop strength in particular my toes to push down, if that makes sense.

Good video. When I learned the pole exercise for downhill, they taught me to hold the pole to somewhat face the direction of the mountain, which he is doing here. Giving your body that counter rotation seems to put more inside edge pressure on your turning/downhill ski, which strengthens your control and turn.

You could use a base cleaner...I usually just use some water and a cloth on fishscale waxless skis..if you use klister and have needles and dirt stuck to it then you definitely need to clean that off before you store them.

Great video. Is there any recommendations regarding shaft length? For instance, it seems that most classic roller skis are around 700mm, but Swix is the only one with a much longer model (Swix Roadline Classic) at 790mm. I am stuck between Swix and Fischers RC7 Classic.

Nice analysis and demonstration! I think that one thing contributing to the spread-out stance is when beginners see those phony posed pictures of classic skiers with the back foot way out behind and up in the air (like 1960s racers). They don't realize that this is just an instant in the stride (perhaps exaggerated for dramatic effect), and end up concentrating on the position of the back foot. But their balance isn't good enough to get on one foot so they end up in that awkward position.

Hello Keith: Just popped in here after watching this video; as always great tips; OK less than a month ago I skated for the first time the American Birkiebeiner in Cable, WI...........they had to "make" 6 km of snow in order to pull off they're 50th Anniversary event but they did a tremendous job securing a 10k loop which as a novice we all did 3 times for 30k...........my main issue Keith was I lacked the endurance to tackle the hills they created and although I finished I ran out of gas a few times.....lol...........despite the fact that we all faced here in Eastern Canada a lackluster Winter so my actual on-snow training was way behind compared to 22/23........not to mention the temps were above freezing so we all overheated.........anyway..........any tips you can share for next years 50k long distance event will be greatly appreciated.........thanks,David

A wise man once said "If you can run, you can ski" -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH_YoYmAa8iriMU Slowing it down is great fun, but I think it's not an entirely fair way of thinking about that as a way to avoid needing the athleticism to ski fast. You and Doug are clearly athletic people, with well-developed classic technique and probably good balance. For dopes like me, I find it easier to have good form while going fast (obviously not so fast that my form falls apart), since balance is easier when I don't have to spend much time on any ski at any time. I'm not the racing type, I just want to enjoy some fun track or go touring somewhere interesting, so I like to go slow, but I find that going slow with good weight transfer is harder from a technique perspective. It's a lot easier to ride a bike at 15mph than 1.5mph, and sometimes it's easier to ski at a faster pace. Thanks so much for yet another awesome video. I'm glad Doug is getting to get out there and have some fun while he heals, and wish him a full recovery
@k2nicol

I totally agree with your point about bike speed but I find that many skiers ski faster than they can balance on one foot and hence get incomplete weight shift..but it all depends on what you like and what you are trying to accomplish...

You mentioned the shuffle while in track. I know we are supposed to avoid shuffling at all costs (because it limits our strides and can cause bad habits), but is there any particular scenario where shuffling is ok? I notice when Im in deeper ungroomed snow its very difficult to get a good kick because Im cutting through snow, so Im shuffling, but when I retrace that same path I cut Im able to get good kick and glide. So is shuffling permissible in this scenario?
@k2nicol
@k2nicol 7 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right...there are many times when a shuffle is about the only way to go...deep snow, cold snow with little glide, etc ...but it is good to have good weight shift in your tool kit so that you can stride well when you want and then shuffle when conditions dictate.
@andrewhicks6712

@@k2nicol for sure. When Im in those deeper snow conditions, Im being extra aware of my weight transfer
@gridstop-or6cb
@gridstop-or6cb 7 ай бұрын
I find that when I can manage some float if my weight is split between skis it's nice to shuffle, but when the snow is so deep I'm really trudging, a decent amount of weight transfer can actually help. It's isn't going to be pretty like Keith striding in groomed track, but I can get the tiniest glide to help me cut the track and occasionally even have the striding (and not just the other parts of the tour) be fun.

These are skate skis so I leave mine set at 0. For classic you certainly have the option of moving the binding forward for more grip and back for better glide. I sometimes play with this but often find not much difference.
