the fountains also provide a vital role in providing the population with potable water during any crisis where the water pumps of the city dont work anymore. since some of them work only off of spring water ("notwasserbrunnen") they can be unlocked and a water distribution station can be set up very quick to provide the local population with fresh drinking water :)

I actually usually carry my water bottle anyway so I can take a sip while relaxing on the tram. Additionally some fountains are more convenient for filling a bottle than for drinking directly. But I can bring it empty and fill it whenever I like. This is one of the things I really love about living in Zürich!

I guess this video comes from my perspective of taking my bike everywhere I go :p Speaking about convenient designs, my favorite design that I've seen in the city so far is the one by Albisgutli (where the water goes up vertically, at 1:13). It's so easy to drink from and there's a lot that comes out, meaning you can get hydrated really fast.

It makes sense for a garbage tram. Modern cities have underground waste collection points. These points obviously don't move around, so waste collecting service follows a rigid predetermined path. So like a highly serviced bus line gets upgraded into a tram line, we should do this with garbage collection too!
@inductionpan

Zürich also has underground waste collection points! Although it Zurich, there are a lot of them, and I don't think that they're serviced regularly enough to warrant a tram :/

Are you telling me this major metropolitan US railway is *not* electrified? Damn. Even the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow to Vladivostok has been fully electrified since 2002, more than 20 years ago, all 9000km or 5600 miles of it. The last time I took a non-electrified train was the Trans-Mongolian, which traverses a sparsely populated desert. The fact that Americans think electrifying 1100 miles of rail in one of the busiest metro areas in the world is a pipe dream just speaks volumes to how broken US transit is. Also, I'm sorry but those cars look like they are from the 1950s! Very interesting to hear this perspective though!
@inductionpan
@inductionpan 10 ай бұрын
Well, only a part of the Metra, along with the entire CTA, is electrified. But most of the other Metra lines aren't. Don't ask me why that is :/. But hey, the plan is to get new wagons soon, so at least we'll have that! They're going to be similar to the ones in Europe (they're Alstom I believe).

this vid is great and as someone who regularly takes metra, these points are valid. Having signs that show where your trains is going would be lovely, instead of having to get the app or ask someone. It's funny tho because some stations on the Metra Electric district actually have this. At van buren street station, there are E-signs that say which train is coming and all the stops it will stop at. It would be very nice if more stations could get this as it is the bare minimum.

Another one: Swiss train stations are hubs for schedule-coordinated bus feeders that raise ridership, whereas most Metra stops have few or no connections to buses. In almost no cases are the train and bus schedules coordinated for fast connections.

The first one should be the 1890s era locomotives. I live next to a UPN station at the north end. 24 times a day a smoky polluting locomotive belches smoke and greenhouse gasses and stench into our neighborhood and into our windows. For those that dont know, metra operates very old locomotives on this line that stay at high rpm even stopped at the station. Massive brown and black smoke like the 1950s. Its disgusting.
@inductionpan
@inductionpan 11 ай бұрын
🤮 Even in my thumbnail, you can faintly see the smoke coming out of the locomotive. But at least it's only polluting office areas that have good hvac systems. I can only imagine living next to a station with constant smoke, it's probably like smoking loads of cigarettes all the time. I thought I read somewhere that metras getting electric locomotives; hopefully that's a decent stopgap solution.

@@inductionpan Metra is proposing converting some of their super old locos to hybrid. Half diesel half battery. It's widely considered a joke. It's soooooo ridiculous. Yes, can see it in your thumbnail and video. But that one is not so bad. Some of them are truly awful with whining turbos ready to blow. Oddly, on other lines metra uses newer versions that do go to low idle at the stations. I am sure they have some ridiculous exemption to pollute and all over their website it's "green this" and 'green that"...
@inductionpan
@inductionpan 11 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm not sure that hybrid locomotives are the best idea, it would probably take forever to charge such a massive battery. Anyways it would be best if the entire network got electrified, but I don't think that's happening anytime soon :/

@inductionpan
@inductionpan 11 ай бұрын
I think you mean that there's no option to pay with a card (and not with cash) if you don't have the app, correct? I find that crazy too, but I think after these vending machines come in, buying tickets on the train will probably stop all together. Although I can see it being useful to collect fines for not having your ticket 😅 Regarding the wrong side, maybe it's because Metra only wants to use one track to save on maintenence casts or something? That's my best guess at least.

I was in Montreal in July of this year, and I was pleasantly surprised to see an electric minitruck driving by with the logo of some business on it. I did not expect to see such a thing in Canada. It even had red turn signals, which was both good and bad; bad because red turn signals are stupid and should be abolished, but good because it was a sign that it was made specifically for the North American market.
