I use BOTH rigid foam like you have there and spray foam. Spray foam is quite expensive compared to fiberglass, rock wool, or rigid board. However, you have to figure the labor. Effectively you double the cost of materials to find the labor margin. In Las Vegas, where I live, there is ONE spray foam company that works under about four different company names. And today's spray foam is much better than 10 years ago. No outgassing and better mix consistency. If your goal is speed, you pay the company. If you want to save money, you DIY. Yup. I did both on the mountain house. I work so slow I couldn't feed a family this way. But visitors love the house and rave about the build quality. Having said that, I too use the workforce at closest hand: my three kids, two boys one girl. They can frame, finish concrete, flex and pull electric wire, and hang cabinets. My youngest actually assembled his own water manifold for a PEX installation from raw copper tubing and fittings. I let drywall guys hang and finish the walls. It's faster and they usually do a better job. I can touch up after they leave. BTW, my daughter helped me rebuild a classic Mustang and after she took the ASFAB for the Navy, they offered her a scholarship to learn nuclear engineering. She really wanted a wet assignment and qualified for SAR training in Florida.

Great video, I love seeing kids get involved and learning by doing. IMO, ISO foam is considerably cheaper than the xps you used and a better choice as it is not flammable.

I did an arch building with two 4" polliso Loctite foam and construction adhesive. Dont use great stuff. Locktite flue has the same expansion rating as the steel and the insulation. . There are hand insulation saws for $20 and they do go much faster. Harbor Frieght beam saw attachment for a skillsaw. Glue up and foam between each then tape. Foil faced on one side a white interior surface that can be washed to the inside. They make specialty tapes you get from commercial suppliers. Rood peak should have a vent. I'm a contractor

I see the kids moving and stacking the firewood and have memories... that was me and my brothers back in the late 70's early 80's... but oh did the house feel warm... hell even our St. Bernard dog loved to cuddle the wood stove. But when the power went out, we still had heat.

The tight fitting pressure mostly holds it in. But we did use a few 4” screws just to hold them in place until we screwed our roofing/siding metal over it with 4” screws

Thank you for the detail brother. Ready to get my building insulated as well. I can handle 100 degree weather in the south just buy opening the door and turning on fans. 20 degree weather is a bigger beast tho. So this is really what I needed to hear.

I use spray foam not the Styrofoam because it gets next to useless in the extreme cold. I don't have trouble with spray foam or cans of paint because I pay attention to the directions and understand why the company puts them on because they don't want their products to fail. Spray foam is produced in its proper form if you mix the two chemicals together at the correct temperature, it has no other options chemistry is colidal

Yeah every box truck trailer or camper my grandpa would gut the fiberglass and foamboard it.. the thicker the better and just sprayfoam the cracks. He took the box truck to bethal alaska and slept in it at night and worked on cranes and bulldozers during the day.. guess the foam board was warm enough he did that s*** for decades. All while dodging child support for 3 daughters the cold hearted bastard 😹

Cut with razor blade on line as deep as blade will go. Flip to other side and pop off cut over a table edge or freestanding. Easier than you think. Maybe watch a KZbin video on cutting insulation sheets

I used 1/2" osb over insulation on walls then prime/painted white. Makes installing stuff on walls much easier. That was 16 yrs ago though and at that time osb was super cheap per sheet. Also bent a 3/4" x 4" L piece of siding metal vulkum urethaned to floor against insulation then wall holds in place (can float some and slide up/down freely). Held the osb 1" off floor. This inside metal adds another layer of protection beyond outside rat guard. Previous owner build the pole building who unfortunately didn't insulate under slab (I would have done this). I did excavate entire perimeter 2ft down all around to install xps and alum tread plate barrier.

I work in heating and cooling. Recently I have discovered that spray foam off gases some pretty nasty stuff. It routinely degrades copper evaporator coils to the point where they can't be repaired. If The gases will do that to copper then I prefer not to introduce them into my lungs. I would never live in a house that was spray foamed within a couple years.
