Awesome encounter! Only prove that you can see any wild critter in every part of the ocean. Where in Tassie was that? I've only seen dolphins and seals in the NW where I live.

@@CameronSmithDiving I got crays there but it's a wild unforgiving coastline. I'm only a shallow water spearfisher so didn't venture too far. Will try my best to get to the October one..

Yeah, East Coast is nice with all its sheltered bays. Always somewhere gentle to dive. West Coast is amazing when it's good. Just hard to predict in advance.

Hey mate, I was thinking of getting into spear fishing and I was wondering if you need a license in 2024 as I’m not sure and I don’t want to get caught spear fishing illegally without knowing?
@CameronSmithDivingАй бұрын
No license is required to spear fish in coastal waters around Tasmania in 2024. You do need a license for lobster, abalone, and scallops. Use the Fishing Tas app to check for any restrictions in certain areas.

Cheers bro, looking at moving over from NZ; was sad to see no snapper or kingfish on the menu haha; but what a beautiful place and ocean. Are there any seaside towns you would reccomend living in for someone who appreciates rural and small community, healthy culture etc? Cheers mate, enjoyed the positive attitude!
@CameronSmithDiving2 ай бұрын
Kingies do come through, not as commonly speared here, though. Same with snapper. Anywhere on the East Coast is awesome. Only issue is that not many employment opportunities match the cost of housing over that side. Sensational for camping trips and shore diving.

@@CameronSmithDiving which spots are actually cheap to buy/good for spearing?
@CameronSmithDiving2 ай бұрын
@@joek292 If you can get to Hobart, Freedive Tasmania specialises in Freediving gear, and GoDive have a huge range of gear. Can always ask GoDive to match Adreno prices too. If you're in Launceston, you've got Tasmanian Divers Group. Adreno is the big name online for Australia (almost like the Australian Amazon for diving). Their prices are pretty good, but there can be issues that you won't have to worry about if buying local. I'd recommend that you get fit out at your closest dive shop, then order stuff online if you really want an item and can't find it here.

Hey could i get the Civiche Recipe? That looks so nice, might be some point in shooting wrasse after all
@CameronSmithDiving4 ай бұрын
So many awesome ways to do ceviche! The wrasse one was a little different, in that we used a bit of a soy, ginger, chilli sauce in with it. The other one was a traditional Chilean style ceviche. Personally, I like to use more lime than lemon, usually going a 2:1 ratio (or sometimes completely lime). A bit of sesame oil is also a great trick! I've posted another video with a herring cale ceviche, which is a go-to of mine including some Mexican spices: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaSXoJV8hq6qg6s Not the most sought after fish, but gotta be my favourite for a ceviche!

Nice vid. About 12 years ago I visited Tassie and dived Binalong and the Bay of Fires. While looking for crays I swear blind I saw a good kilo + rock blackfish (black drummer). I'm from NSW and have shot many hundreds of them over the years so was dead certain. I was told that they don't go that far south. Are they ever seen in Tas?
@CameronSmithDiving4 ай бұрын
I haven't shot one mate, but have been with a mate that shot one at Bicheno. Both black and silver drummer are on the East Coast of Tassie (at least over the last few years). I reckon you probably saw one!
@kaeolandon-lane34294 ай бұрын
@mistergormsby they are down here, the other day I shot a 55cm silver drummer out of Fortescue Bay. Binalong ends up getting a lot of northern species because of its proximity to the East Australian Current- it’s why it has huge urchin barrens whereas they haven’t reached further south as extensively yet.

More good spots than bad on the east coast! Whole coastline is awesome. For shore diving, look at the swell in the area you want to go, then enter where it's sheltered. Points and headlands are generally good. When you're in the water, try to find where the currents converge.

Cheers mate! It wasn't too cold in the water, around 15 or so I reckon. Was a warm November's day, the sun was shining, and it was shallow and close to shore. I purchased all my stuff to get started, including my Rob Allen Scorpia, from Adreno online.
