Yes you can't beat a bit of small stream fishing. Mind you I wouldn't mind a few casts on your spectacular chalk streams👍
@CJL20085 ай бұрын
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 If you’re ever in Germany, let me know, would be delighted to take you out. Too much of a good thing though is not good for you! My son joined me last week and he was gobsmacked by what he saw. The weed growth is beyond stupid now, making fishing difficult, irresponsible even; casting 15-20 meters across weed into a small pocket of water normally results in a broken cast. Still, the hatches are nice to see as long as the temperature doesn’t drop. However, it still feels as though summer has not fully started.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77245 ай бұрын
@CJL2008 is there any weed cutting? Normally the chalk streams here have about a fortnight of cutting just after the Mayfly hatch.
@CJL20085 ай бұрын
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 no weed cutting at all. The banks are a nightmare as well. Home county chalk streams with manicured lawns, they are not! Beavers make the banks very dangerous and you really need to keep your wits about you. I prefer not to wade as the fish are easily spooked.

That was a delightful trip Chris. Don't worry, we believe you 😂... Really nice little river. 👌 So I'm finally here! By the river in Dumfries and Galloway. I have trout and baked spuds in my belly. 😋 Of course, Max had some too. I came Thursday going home tomorrow... maybe Tuesday. One of my brothers came for a couple of days, he's gone now but caught a good few. Thank you sir. 🙏👊

Sounds properly idyllic sir, camping by a trout stream must be just about perfect.

@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 It is that! When I lived in the camper I spent a lot of time here. Pretty quiet dead end road, trout stream, otters, mink, foxes, hares, deer, herons, buzzards, nearest village 40 minutes away and really good phone / Internet connection. Perfect 👌 Though I do have a few favourites that have no signal and that's also really good for a few days.

How lucky you are Chris. We have lovely small streams like this out here, (my favourite fishing), however we have to contend with snakes who just love this habitat. I walked up a small stream last year and found a gate with the most wonderful sign which read, "You are most welcome to fish this river on my land, but please be aware that you are entering Tiger Snake country". Bound to put off all but the fool hardy !! Great video yet again. Well done.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77245 ай бұрын
Blimey Steve, the worst we have to deal with is the odd biting midge.🤣 If there is a sign on the gate it'll be beware of the bull, but I normally find them quite easy to spot in the undergrowth 😄

It really is surprising if you get a better one just how much they fight on light tackle. They know every ledge and fallen branch and over the years I've had several better fish "do me" before I had time to react.

Well done Chris, the one you hooked must of been about 10lb! 😂I was out today and must of had over 20 fish, most of them over a pound! And a stream with raging waterfalls and deep pools you’d never think there was fish in it! There’s some videos of it, some of them don’t do the fishing justice. It’s called, grey mares tail 😁👍 here’s a link to a good video

The stream looking stunning as usual and huge fun as always Chris😎. Good man and your philosophy of these places to be enjoyed by everyone is correct,so long as they dont scare all the fishes 'eh ! 😉 The flow was looking great still for sure and still lovely and green too. The upside to our funny ol' spring and summer weather I 'spose. I'll believe you on the big un too btw ! Keep up and at it mate , cant quite believe its August damned soon. Oh , and I personally find if the fishing up top is a bit slow to the usual suspects this time of year then a detached foam bodied daddy long legs very frequently gets them going. As small as you can tie or buy is better for the hook up rate too on the small streams.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77245 ай бұрын
Interesting? I do have some foam daddies for the Crediton waters (normally for the back end of the season). I've never tried them on this stream though, what size are we talking? Remember these fish are only 4" to 7" mostly.
@nickreeves27525 ай бұрын
A foam daddy or a 'leggy' foam black beetle are my first daytime go to's on the streams anywhere during high summer and bit beyond Chris. I fish a lot of the Wye & Usk foundations wild streams so we're generally on a par sizewise here but these flies I also find can get good attention from larger fish (sometimes much) that are tucked away having a moody this time of year ! I tie them on on standard pattern dry fly hooks , size 16 or 14 and the foam body extending about 10 - 12mm roughly & get decent to good hook up rate. Bit longer still works ok though, I think the foam collapses out of the way ok on a take. Definitely fish them with little twitches though if a dead drift doesnt do it at first! This tactic works very well too on the flat water pools I find.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77245 ай бұрын
@nickreeves2752 many thanks for the tip, I like the sound of the leggy beetle. Do you have a tying list for it? Agreed that those little twitches with dry fly and nymph can often make all the difference.
@nickreeves27525 ай бұрын
Yes Chris , I use Sybai soft foam (much more bouyant/easier to tie than the razor foam stuff I find ) , a peacock colour flashy & coarse dubbing ( Hends I think ) and for legs I have used black hen cape feather wound as a hackle /thin black rubber legs/centipede rubber legs but I use now just a few strands of fine black Krystal flash tied in at the thorax. Its great, fine and mobile and with a little bit of flash! Am sure they get more bites now!😉 Btw , I find if the daddy or beetle etc is getting no attention and your fair sure theres gotta be a good ol' fish tucked in those Alder roots etc then I go poop or bust and chuck out a Chernobyl Ant (nothing too huge) and it can be v v surprising ...and v entertaining ! I've literally had fish swim halfway across the stream at times to nail these with gusto! Either that or it just scares the pants off them and they just go sulk further into the roots.😆 Can be an absolute hoot in the v fast water /plunge pools etc too.😯 Hope all helps.
