Thanks Nicholas. I agree. I'm hoping this videos can serve to entertain and help aspiring geologists see what it is like to do field geology, graduate school, etc.

Just watched this again. I love the sense of humor that goes along with the less than desirable menu. Not to mention the physical exertion. Thank you for sharing. It really is amazing to feel like part of the journey.

Man Caden, you started something with that song by Wiz Kalifa. I'm telling my age on this, it was a son by Billy Joel decades ago called "Leave a Tender Moment Alone". I loved it but hadn't heard it a geological age! But I found a version better than Joel's by a group from the Neatherlands: Robin Crauwels Jasper Erckens Ben Vanderweyden - Leave a tender moment alone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYW9YZRvpMllgs0 . Great words IMHO.

What is the bureaucracy like to transfer the rock samples from Argentina to the US? I really like the fact that you thanked the mountain - it was very "Inca" of you.
@cadenhowlett2 жыл бұрын
Shipping from Argentina was very easy for us thanks to our colleagues in Mendoza. They wrote us a letter describing the kind of work we are doing (most importantly, that the samples have no economic value and are not related to mining in any way). That letter is attached to each shipment and allows the samples to go right through customs with ease. Believe it or not, Chance and I shipped our samples on a Wednesday and they were 30 feet from my office in Arizona on Friday. Two days. It blew my mind haha

Hello, I am Victor and I am thinking of climbing this mountain (Cerro Mercedario) and I would like to know some things about the climb, please answer the following questions. Did you use donkeys? Do you know how much it costs to rent a donkey? What city did you rent the car from and how much did it cost? Is it true that you used the car to Laguna Blanca, from there the ascent started by foot?
@cadenhowlett Жыл бұрын
Hola Victor. We did not use donkeys. We drove straight from Barreal to Laguna Blanca (i think we parked at about 3300m). From there it is just a matter of taking your time up the camps in order to acclimate. You can pack relatively light for 8-14 days total depending on your health. We did it in eight days which was pretty fast (probably as fast as I would want to do it in order to reduce the risk of altitude sickness etc). We have a friend in Mendoza who rents us their personal vehicle for about 60USD per day (but we rent it for months at a time). If you fly to Mendoza, rent a car there, and drive to Barreal (stay at Don Lisandros!), then drive to Laguna Blanca you can start on foot from there! It is a big beautiful mountain.

Why are you building a little rock wall around every campsite, wind?
@cadenhowlett2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, primarily protection from the wind. Our trip was remarkably calm--the camps are pretty exposed and the wind can easily reach 100km/hr. We got lucky!

There are lots of opportunities for international students to do MS and PhDs in the states. Most universities have resources for prospective international students to gain information (e.g., international.arizona.edu/iss)
