I’ve recently got this soundset for K2600x. Very clever programming - a lot of effort must have been put into creating this soundset! Mostly pads (good ones!), but that’s ok with me. Sounds use effects heavily. Haven’t found any issues with K2600 compatibility. Of course, would be nice to have more controllers pre-assigned (K2600 has 8 sliders, large ribbon etc.), but K2000 had no those, so no complaint here. Fixable by user 🙂 Overall, very satisfied with this set! Also, it is very good for learning VAST programming/tricks. 👍

Glad to hear that you liked the K-POWER sounds and everything is working fine. Yes, many nights were spent compiling all the layers, modulation sources and destinations, DSP parameters, but I enjoy doing these things my whole life. Mostly pads there, because that's my favorite type of sounds (as well as ambient). My K2000 only has one controller slider (CC#6), so many sounds have a second modulation on the ModWheel (CC#1) to make the sounds more flexible and lively. It can be assigned to LFO speed, FUNs, envelope times, filters, DSP parameters, etc. Feel free to experiment with the 8 sliders on your K2600 and it will be a good way to learn more about the VAST architecture. Thanks Serhiy for the feedback and stay tuned because my next (and possibly last) soundbank called K-PLANET will be launched soon! Cheers

@_oscillator7 ай бұрын
Yes, it is one of the VAST functions (DSP blocks) called WRAP/DIST/SHAPER/SYNC etc that gives distortion. Added waveforms such as Square and Saw also create a "dirty" sound. At the same time, the K2000 can sound very clean, but this is not interesting to me, because there are a lot of synths around with a sterile sound. To be perfectly honest, I don't think you really need to bring yourself down to using a secondary Win XP machine just for synth editors. This can work perfectly fine in W7 or even W10, as far as I can say from my experience - I also have some 80s and 90s stuff like AN1x, FS1R, MKS-70, EX-8000, Microwave I/II... and everything works perfectly with MIDIQuest on a W10 machine! Otherwise - nice setup! I'd definitely recommend getting a better pair of monitors - I've had those KS-40 monitors and they are ok in a pinch, but my current Equator D5mk2 are so much better (although discontinued and the company doesn't exist anymore). I plan to upgrade my speakers to Kali IN-8 eventually. Now THAT will be awesome!
@_oscillator8 ай бұрын
I agree about the Win XP computer, but there are still some editors (KLIB and K2500 for Kurzweil K2000, HRMCAL for Kawai K5000, WSEdit and LIBRA for Korg Wavestation) that only work on a 32-bit system. But the most important reason for me to use an XP machine is that this computer only has synth editing software installed. No games, no movies, no internet. I like this old computer because nothing takes way my attention. When I use my 64-bit computer with Win 7 and different stuff installed, I very often waste time on some bullsh*t. As for the KS-40 speakers, I bought them mainly because of the Kurzweil name. I love this brand. I know they are not perfect, even the KS-50 would be a better choice, or Eris, Rokit, T8V, or the Equator you mentioned. At least I made my KS-40 a little better by modifying the power supply where I replaced some capacitors with bigger and better ones and also replaced the original uA4558 op amp with an LM4562. I also upgraded the electrolytic capacitors on the High driver with precision foil capacitors. I kept these KS-40 because I believe that if a mix sounds good on them, it will sound good also on much better speakers. For the final step, I have Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro headphones to make sure everything sounds well. Anyway, great to see you here on YT and I'm glad you liked my little studio. It's always very helpful to hear suggestions from people like you. Best regards mate.
@EvilDragon6668 ай бұрын
I am pretty sure you can run those 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows. I haven't found an old program that didn't work for me on W10. AN1x editor which is 32-bit runs without any problems... I think I have some even older stuff that still works perfectly. I can even run the old Korg X5D editor which is a 16-bit program by using OTVDM! KS-40... note that these speakers are not designed by Kurzweil. They are rebranded Empire R1000 in a different cabinet. So the Kurzweil name doesn't really apply here ;) It's more about how you cannot really get an accurate picture of the low end with these small box speakers (and then DT-770 is also not exactly linear response either unless you flatten it with Sonarworks some). But hey, your output speaks more than words that are typed. :)
@_oscillator8 ай бұрын
@EvilDragon666 You are right about running 32-bit applications on the latest Windows. There are many solutions such as virtual machine and compatibility mode etc. As I wrote earlier, the main reason I use a XP computer is that I don't install anything on it except editors, and this forces me to concentrate only on that purpose. As for the KS-40, of course the 4" woofers are not capable of producing low end, and I think about changing speakers, but there is no hurry because music and sound design are just a hobby for me, only occasionally and from time to time. I'm happy with the setup I already have. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Older models like the K2500 and K2000 are also great choices, and they also have rackmount versions for those with limited space. Newer models like the PC3K, PC4 and K2700 are very powerful, but unfortunately they don't have 61-key or rack version. However, they have their own editing software from Kurzweil. Does anyone know if a midi merger will work with 2 or more sysex controllers to operate a synth? I have a Yamaha SY77 and three Peavey pc1600x's, I want to use all three to adjust the FM parameters
@_oscillator Жыл бұрын
Of couse it will work. There are many MIDI mergers with multiple inputs, such as DigitalLife 5-In/2-Out, Kenton Merge 8, MIDI Solutions Quadra Merge or more powerful M8 model with 8 MIDI inputs. They all merging incoming MIDI messages, but there are merging rules - while any input is handling a SysEx message it becomes the SysEx master, then SysEx messages from all other inputs will be locked out until the message at the master input has finished. That means you can use one controller at the time, then other controllers consequently.
@ambidex Жыл бұрын
I find sysex amazing and incredibly useful. I have a Roland that has some features that are impossible to use without making use of sysex. The trouble i find is that very few midi controllers, and apparently even DAWs, support sysex and seem even actively filter it out from midi data entirely. Any suggestion on MIDI controllers and DAWs that fully support sysex? I was disappointed and surprised that my MPC Live didn't allow sysex message editting, and that apparently Ableton actively filters sysex.
@_oscillator Жыл бұрын
It's the same story with my Ensoniq MR Rack: using SysEx is the only way to edit sounds. Luckily, someone created a software editor for this, otherwise it is almost impossible to find all the SYX codes of the sound parameters in order to send them correctly to the synth. Sending/receiving patches is a much simpler task (MIDI-OX, SendSX etc). I don't know much about the new generation of MIDI keyboards because I use an old Korg Taktile 49 keyboard, which allows me to attach any SysEx controller number to any of the 8 rotary pots, 8 sliders, 8 buttons, and even the touchpad. This is enough for me to control the sounds of my synths in real time. I'm sure most new keyboard controllers support MIDI mapping, such as the Arturia KeyLab, M-Audio Oxygen or Novation LaunchKey - all of which have sliders, encoders and pads. Regarding DAW, I use an old version of Cubase 5 and Sonar X2. They write SysEx data from my controllers and send it back to the hardware synths with no problem. As far as I know, newer versions of Cubase are even more advanced for SysEx. You can check the specifications and learn more about it on the Steinberg website.
@ambidex Жыл бұрын
@_oscillator thanks for the point in the right direction. As far as those Midi controllers you mentioned, none of those, except possibly the oxygen, support sysex at all. @tadream16w Жыл бұрын
@@_oscillator Indeed very sad that the sounds are not available. But can you explain the starting point and your method of tweaking the sounds ?
@_oscillator Жыл бұрын
@@tadream16w As I said, most of the sounds in this track are generated by random MIDI events and modulations. The CC datastream come to the Morpheus from 2 sequencers - I used Kurzweil K2000 to record notes, the second sequencer was the Audiaire Zenith Cubase DAW plugin to control the CC data. Korg Taktile 49 keyboard sliders also were used to control in real time the 4 channels (ABCD) of Morpheus. As you probably know, ABCD channels can be be assigned to any parameter of modulation matrix, function generators, free run generators, Z-plane filters etc. Another tip - programming sounds from the front panel is clumsy due the tiny display, so this synth definitely must be edited from the computer to make life easier. MorphEdit and Edisyn are great editing software, both are free and work on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. A good starting point for creating patches is to modify them from the Morpheus card collection (cards 9200, 9201, 9202 and 9203). About this demo - many of these sounds are compiled in the K-POWER collection (demo on my channel). Another patch bank called K-PLANET is almost ready and will be launched soon.

I remember somebody once saying somewhere that Kurzweil demos were all “Jordan rudess leads and Mexican wedding pianos” haha and thought you know what? That sounds kinda accurate… if it’s not a pink floyd cover, then it’s those things… then there’s your video - which is literally the absolute best. It’s my favourite out of any Kurzweil videos! The K planet sounds intriguing, what kind of a pack are we expecting? :)

@@ptr_new The sounds of K-PLANET are selected similarly to K-POWER - the same rich pads with modulations on modwheel and slider, also some basses and sound FX. I find the K-PLANET more oriented for meditative style of playing, while K-POWER was more oriented on analog type of sounds. I know that someday these sounds will be lost if I don't share them with other people.

If you happen to sell these patches, let me know they are amazing

Many of these patches are included in the K-POWER sound collection. You can find a demo video of this patch bank on my channel. Please contact me if you are interested in buying K-POWER sounds: [email protected]

I got one about a month ago for about $800 with the manuals and a card, pristine condition. A ton of money. Now... the sounds is amazing and the best sound is actually the piano. The piano is very dark and very present. Is a dark stage piano, is perfect.

Yes, 800 bucks that's expensive. I got mine for 185 bucks then, nine years ago. All synths of the nineties are becoming rare, so prices are kicking up. Those who didn't like them have already sold their synths, but whoever find them good never let them go.

@@_oscillator Yes, is expensive, I was expecting to buy it for $600 tops. But yes, most of my gear I got it back in 2006 to 2012 and everything was $450 tops. I got two Roland JP-8080 for $400 each, a JD-800 for $250. I just got a D-50 in a pawnshop for $120 because it was all messed up and made no sounds, the battery ran out but of course I didn't tell them. Replaced the battery and vuala! The same thing with a D-70 "it made no sound", I got it for $90... Local off. The Morpheus has been the most expensive, every other I got for 1/3 of the price or less. The reality is that, one thing is what they ask for and another what people are willing to pay.

@@DF-eg8vl I stopped buying synths few years ago, because I already have 7 of them. The most expensive synth I bought in 2016 was the Kawai K5000R. I paid 500 bucks, now it costs 1500. I also wanted to find a Yamaha EX5R, Yamaha FS1R, Ensoniq Fizmo, Roland JD-990 and Clavia Modular G2 Engine, but now I changed my mind, coz I'm not ready to pay that high price of 1500-2000 bucks. With this money I can buy new and much more advanced synths like Waldorf M, Kyra or Iridium, Korg Wavestate, Modwave or OpSix. Not far from this price is also brand new Kurzweil K2700.

@@_oscillator The K5000R was $500 at Sam Ash back in 1997-98. I got the keyboard which was good regarding sound but a pain to program. I got rid of it within a year. I would have the JD-990 if I had the JD-800 that works as a real time controller for it. I have the 800 but the 990 is too expensive. Again, one thing is the price they ask for them and another is the real price, there is always someone selling for less or willing to negotiate.

Hi, I'm glad you liked my stuff. In this video, you can hear some of the sounds from the K-POWER collection, but not all of them. The K-POWER soundbank contains many sounds that are not presented in this video. You can find a K-POWER demo video on my channel - they are fully compatible with any K2000/K2500/K2600 series synth. Cheers

@@glooms691 Yes, FUNs controlled by LFO is amazing stuff. You can create any kind of modulations that way and attach them to any parameter. A lot of crazy things can be done with VAST engine. It's hard to believe that the K2000 comes from 1991. A true genius synth!

The sounds here are brilliant. I was wondering if there is update on you releasing them as a patch set? I have a Morpheus -> Ultra Proteus conversion application I am working on, and would be very keen to test it using your sounds :)
@_oscillator Жыл бұрын
Currently I'm working on a new soundset for the Kurzweil K2000/2500/2600 series called K-PLANET. I decided to create this after my first K-POWER soundset. I would like to make something for Morpheus, of course, but there's also the Kawai K5000, Blofeld and Ensoniq MR Rack is waiting to be explored... there's never enough time for everything. What is the function of the Morpheus->Ultra Proteus convertion tool you mentioned? They both have all the same parameters, only UP has more waveforms and extra filters. Computer editors such as MorphEdit and Edisyn work well with both of them.
@SuperGeekon Жыл бұрын
@@_oscillator Nothing too fancy, it essentially takes the sysex from ones machine, and remaps the waveforms and filters to valid ones for the destination machine, as they have different IDs, and creates the new sysex. I would like to get both machines eventually so as to be able to match as closely as possible. So true about never enough time! K2500 and k5000 sounds set sound very interesting too. I would be up for all those sound sets :)
@_oscillator Жыл бұрын
@@SuperGeekon Well it's a good idea to remap the waveform and filter numbers to a new sysex file, I think there is no such software yet to perform this function. I wish you all the best to finish this software soon! Cheers
