Congrats on your excellent progress! I too have been teaching myself violin but mostly Scottish Irish Cape Breton music. I am 62 yrs old and started playing when I was 60. I usually practice at 2 to 3 hours everyday. I don't think it matters how old you are to start if you have a passion to learn how to play any instrument. I love fiddle music but I have a strong desire to learn how to play classical music so I am presently looking for a teacher. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. You are doing amazingly well! 🎻

So I do hope for you that you will also find a teacher that you feel good with. :-) Hope you will keep me posted!

@snake71975 жыл бұрын
Great technique! Her bow hold is nearly perfect right from the start. And she uses the whole length of the bow, where it's possible. That makes all the difference in the sound. Too many beginners - especially when they learn on their own - concentrate too much on the left hand. But you produce sound with the right one. That's why bow technique is so important.

Bravo. I don't yet play violin. so have no idea of the challenges you face. I play many brass and woodwind instruments and am learning the piano but I have had my eye on the violin for some time.. It is becoming obvious from the many vids I have watched that intonation is really the biggest challenge you face. I'm not trying to diminish the other challenges for there clearly are many, but from a listeners perspective, that appears to be the main issue.

You're doing a fantastic job! One quick thing: Make sure to rotate your left elbow as you play on different strings. When on the A string, your arm can be in its relaxed position. On the D string, you'll want to be able to see just a little bit of it past the violin (so rotate into your right side just a little bit). With the G string, you should be able to see the majority of your left arm. On the E string, you want to tuck it in the opposite direction. That way your fingers are all more easily accessible to use.
@ViolinAdventures6 жыл бұрын

Hi Desiree, thanks so much for commenting. How exciting to start playing the violin!! I had played the clarinet before and also know how to read sheet music. I started with the Suzuki Books. Most people use this method to play be ear but I just followed the sheet music. Good morning Mariko Barra, thank you so much!! I believe the piece that me and my teacher picked out for this year is Concerto in G Major, op. 24, first movement by Oscar Reiding... this piece sounds so beautiful. However, I’ve played other pieces like Concerto IV by Joseph Bloch, Swan Lake, and Concerto III by George Perlman. I’m also required to know a lot of three octave scales, and a couple chromatic scales by memory so I’ve already started working on that as well. But I really love your vibrato, your tone is amazing for just the skill you are at... everything is coming along greatly as you progress... if you need more pieces to play, I’ve got some that are my favorite if you’re interested; just let me know. Mariko Barra yes I am. Been on it for nine months now and totally enjoying every bit. I am working on the Minuets and Kuchler opus 11 among others. Loving the sounds. How long do you practice during the day?
@ViolinAdventures6 жыл бұрын
That's great! Kuchler opus 11 sounds beautiful indeed!! I'm thinking of working on it again too. Usually I practice 1 hour each day. Sometimes I have a bit more time/energy and I can do more. But normally I strive for 1 hour. And it always goes by so fast 😄😄 Good luck with your pieces!!

Hi, that's wonderful! Are you looking for a teacher close to where you live? Or would you like to learn online? If you would like to learn online in an organized way and with professional feedback, I can recommend artistworks.com with violin teacher Richard Amoroso. I've been in his program now for several months now and I'm learning so much with him! He's really helping me to progress and let me know what to work on to improve. It's a fun way of learning. :-) Maybe it's something for you too? Wishing you all the best! :-)

Hi Marikoli! How are you and how has your playing been going? I was wondering why I wasn't being notified of your videos, apparently I needed to click the bell icon😂 I'm so happy for you you've come such long way. Do you still practice regularly, and if so, how long do you practice for in a day now? Again well done!
@ViolinAdventures5 жыл бұрын
:-) Thanks so much!! Well, the past2 months I haven't been able to practice :-(( I'm stuck with tendonitis in my left wrist. I had been playing with pain in my left wrist for a couple of weeks and that wasn't smart. I though the pain would go away on it's own but it just got worse... until I couldn't play anymore. So now I'm taking a complete break until my wrist will be completely healed. I hope to be starting again in a week or so, but it will be just for a couple of minutes per day because I don't want to hurt myself again. But ultimately my goal is to get back to where I was. I was playing everyday for at least an hour. And how are you doing?

Hi Mariko, your progress is amazing, you're an inspiration for self-taught beginners! I just started myself almost 2 months ago. I like that I'm able to play some tunes, but I'm struggeling with keeping a straight bow and intonation. I checked out your beginner video's and it seems like you didn't struggle with this as much. Did the Suzuki book taught you this?
@ViolinAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chriscilia, I did actually struggle with keeping a straight bow. In the beginning I used a tool to help my bow go straight. What also helped was starting my practice sessions with long slow bow strokes, completely focusing on straight bowing and nice sound. There's some good videos that show you how to move your arms to make bowing straight easier. At first it takes very focused work but after some time it get's easier! You'll get there! As for the intonation it helped that I had played other instruments before, so from day 1 I was pretty focused on correcting my finger positions to make the notes as in tune as possible to my ability. Just keep practicing patiently and you'll get there! Good luck to you!

Hi Claudia, thank so much for your nice comments! The headphones is for when I want to record something with accompaniment music. I listen to the accompaniment with my headphones. But me recorder only records the violin. Later I add the accompaniment to the recording. This process results in better audio.

Amazing progress, but you should consider working harder on an easier repertoire rather than continuing learning more difficult pieces. Some of those pieces I didn’t play for years and with good reason! You need to perfect your technique and the basics first! Regardless you’re doing great! Very good for a beginner.

But i think by learning new pieces you get challenged and develope because of the problems you are facing by playing them. Im also playing violin and for me it was really helpfull to play pieces (like bach) where you have to deal with a lot of chords. Anyways im really impressed of her progress.

Hi, thanks for sharing this video and congrats on such quick progress in a short amount of time! Can I ask a question? I have a sister who’s thinking about taking the Richard Amoroso lessons but she isn’t sure about it. Could you perhaps give your opinion? She has been learning violin from a private tutor for 5 years and learnt to play some Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart. Unfortunately her private tutor has moved so she needs a good online teacher. Is the Richard Amoroso class for her skill level? Also, how often can you make video submissions under the 12 month plan (which claims to have unlimited video submissions)? it would help her so much if you can offer a review
@ViolinAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Hi Malcolm Doss, I'm sorry to hear that your sister's private teacher has moved. At this moment I'm not taking lessons with Richard amoroso anymore because I had to take a break from the violin because of some wrist injury. But when I was following his lessons I was very happy with his lessons! He has students of all levels. I thought it was a great honor to learn from him! Under the 12 month plan you can send unlimited videos but you can only send 1 video at a time. Only after he sends his feedback you can send the next video. He usually sends a video response within a week. Of course it might take a little longer sometimes if he's very busy. But his feedback is very valuable. And it's not like he says the same thing to everybody. He gives advice tailored to your specific needs and pieces. He plays with the Philadelphia Orchestra so he really speaks from experience. His feedback videos might just be a couple of minutes but that's more than enough information and exercises to keep you busy for several days. ;-) Hope this helps. Good luck to your sister!

Hi Chad, you must be super excited about starting with the violin. I hope you will enjoy it! Actually, in the description of this video I've explained which teachers I have followed online and I also explain why after some time I enrolled for a video exchange program: artistworks.com/CoG. I wished I had started with the video lessons sooner. They are really very helpful. Apart from what's in the description, this could also be a useful place for you to start: violinspiration.com/. Hope this helps. :-) Good luck!!

@@ViolinAdventures Very excited! And guilty, did not check the description, definitely should have. Thanks for all the resources! I have opted for video training with "The Online Piano and Violin Tutor". She is great! Plus she provides really helpful sheet music to practice open strings etc. I finished the open string lesson and have moved onto first finger position. Focusing right now on maintaining a good tone and bow control, otherwise, it's going really well. I appreciate all of the extra resources, can never have too many. Keep up the good work, and don't forget to practice 40 hours a day. (Extra points if you get the reference).

I loved your video. Great progress! I am a 13 months old violinist, so you are almost 2 years elder than me in our violin world ;) How do you decide what pieces to learn based on your ability?
@ViolinAdventures6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarthak, that's a good question. :-) Basically I follow the Suzuki books, because you can gradually progress with those pieces. But I also learn other pieces. There are entire lists with pieces for each level. So sometimes I look at those lists and then search for those pieces on KZbin. For those I like, I will look up the sheet music and play it through. If it is doable, I start learning them. If they are too hard, I add them to my "to do" list for later on. ;-) Also sometimes people suggest pieces, or I watch KZbin videos of people who are also learning the violin and see what they are playing to have ideas for a new piece. What are you learning at the moment?
@sarthakmusic29196 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thats a great advice. Thanks! I am currently at Suzuki Book 2. But sometimes Suzuki songs become a bit boring for me because of multiple repetitions. Thats when I want to learn some fun popular songs. I will search for level appropriate pieces and make my own list now :)
@ViolinAdventures6 жыл бұрын
Good luck! You could also try the book Solos for Young Violinists. It's nice to learn those pieces as well since they are very different from Suzuki songs. Or you could try some fiddle songs as well. I really like this book www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/FiddleCollection.html?af=violin911. The songs are not that hard. If you're in Suzuki book 2 then you can also learn these fiddle songs. They are really fun to play!! If you want to know how they sound, you can check out this page on my website www.violinadventures.com/category/fiddle-playing/. Have fun!! :-)

@ViolinAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for commenting. Yes, the violin is really hard to learn, especially the intonation and tone production. Sadly I had to stop practicing because I was having serious problems with me left wrist. I've tried lots of things but I injured my wrist and it's painful to play now. Still I'm very happy when I think back of the 3 years I've enjoyed my violin adventure. :-) I do still play music, I have my clarinet that I can play without pain. :-) Are you playing the violin too? hope it's going well for you! hi mariko , how is your progress going ? i am 28 year old guy and i just fell in love with classical music , my dream is to play bach's partitas for violin. i bought a decent beginner's violin and started to play around with it and i feel like i am really beginning to start to feel the bow ( if you know what i mean) i think self teaching has its own magic because you are not spoon fed by a teacher and you are not just following directions, you are exploring and its very exciting. i would love to talk to you more , do you have a social media or email that we can connect on this subject?

Hi, that's so wonderful to read. I can totally relate! After about 2 years I did however feel the need to have a teacher (I signed up for video exchange lessons) to get all my questions answered and receive guidance.
