I'm running a Post-Apocalyptic D&D campaign set in a giant ark-style underground bunker that has fallen into disrepair. This music has INSPIRED ME, haunting, meditative, and perfect to set the mood for my friends playing! Thank you so much, Absolutely amazing!

My favorite thing about this video is the fact that even though it's essentially 45 minutes of a few machines just being themselves, it never gets boring. I love generative patches and I love what you've done here.
@AlastairWilsonMusic
@AlastairWilsonMusic 7 жыл бұрын
I find self-generating patches really good background music, I love them. It only works for me if the notes are quantised to a scale though, I can't stand S&H sent straight to the V/Oct control.
@seemikehack
@seemikehack 7 жыл бұрын
I concur about scale quantization: atonal music has never really been my thing. I have a lot more control over that because my weapon of choice (or necessity, I suppose) right now is PureData. Someday I'll go analog, though!
@AlastairWilsonMusic
@AlastairWilsonMusic 7 жыл бұрын
I can't say I dislike atonal music when it's done in the context of drones or effects (essentially when notes are thrown out of the window altogether) - it's only when people use the 12-tone octave without choosing a scale that it grates on my ears! How come PD is a necessity for you? I've never seen any reason to use it, although possibly because I don't know much about it.
@seemikehack
@seemikehack 7 жыл бұрын
A financial necessity, so to speak. Analog modular synthesis is rather low on the budget priority list as of now, even for a seasoned DIYer like myself; PD is just the way I scratch the itch for now.

I've just now realised what this piece of music reminds me of, not just the music, but the atmosphere and colour you used on the shot too. Are you a H.P.Lovecraft fan by any chance? - 'Through the desolate summits swept raging intermittent gusts of the terrible antarctic wind; whose cadences sometimes held vague suggestions of a wild and half-sentient musical piping, with notes extending over a wide range, and which for some subconscious mnemonic reason seemed to me disquieting and even dimly terrible.' from H.P.Lovecraft's 'At The Mountains Of Madness'. It's my favourite story by him, and this is how I always imagine the strange, eerie musical piping they often refer to!
@AlastairWilsonMusic

As it happens, I'm not a fan of Lovecraft enough that I've properly read any of his stories other The Call of Cthulhu, but I know vaguely of many of them through their inspiration on other peoples' work. However, I am (and particularly was when I was younger, but Lovecraft is a bit heavy for a 13 year old) a big fan of supernatural tales, particularly in a horror context; I love horror games and films, especially when the supernatural is involved. I actually named 004//The Seething Depths from the lighting and mass of cables, which reminded me of the Kraken. Your comment is a good kick up the backside for me to read more Lovecraftian horror!

Adam, if you can get your hands on a "Sony ICD-BX800" digital recorder you can copy right into it from youtube using nothing more than an external 1/8" to 1/8" stereo phono cable. You can also try the Sony ICD-BX132, or the ICD-BX140, or any other company of this type of digital recorder. You can try Walmart or Staples first, but who knows how many different companies actually stock these things today.

Listening again, this really is an influential patch for me, sounds like a £10,000 Eurorack rig. When you describe Cminor triad is that sequenced in both Mother's? I shall enjoy putting my own triad in the sequencers, maybe something to suit the trumpet (Bb). My clock source currently is a Boss RC 505 but the lowest bpm is 40, I don't think this is a problem as there are clock dividers on the Mother 32 and I may find another device to clock the Mothers at 20bpm, but 40bpm is pretty slow and it will end up my own interpretation of your patch. \i'm obssessed with this video, it's cost me £40 in new patch leads but I'm lit-up by it, thank you.
@AlastairWilsonMusic
@AlastairWilsonMusic 7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad this patch is so inspiring to you! I made a different sequence for each M32, both mainly C, Eb and G. 40 bpm will probably make this patch seem oddly fast or quite dense in notes if you keep the reverb decay long, but it might be interesting to use shorter envelope times and see where 40bpm takes you...

very nice, haunting and beautiful how did you decide on the Eventide Space over the Strymon Big Sky? I'm on the fence about these also the Ventris dual reverb with shimmer seems cool too so many choices but money for one of them
@AlastairWilsonMusic
@AlastairWilsonMusic 5 жыл бұрын
I seriously love the sound of the Ventris, and the Big Sky is great for 'clean' ambience (a bit generic nowadays in my opinion), but I heard a piano demo using the blackhole algorithm from the Space and I was sold. They all have very different characteristics, so I recommend trying them all out in a shop if you can. The Space is great for dark ambient stuff but I've used it in non-ambient non-modular tracks too and enjoyed it - if you don't do much dark ambient stuff then the Ventris might be more up your street.

Hi Alastair I was just checking out sound demos of different Moog Synths. I'm very impressed with what you have done here. This is super cool and could be background music to a Triple A Movie. You need to market your work and license it. On another note do you have any desire to do synth tutorials on how you come up with these ideas?
@AlastairWilsonMusic
@AlastairWilsonMusic 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's very kind of you to say so. I won't be licensing my music (at least for a while....) because putting these patches on youtube is more of a hobby, which has the benefit of forcing me to think of new ideas and try out different patches to create different soundscapes. My work (in my opinion at least) is not yet good enough to ask people to pay for it, or even donate - I don't have any plans to monetise my videos or set up a Patreon unless the channel really takes off. As far as tutorials; I'm considering doing a 'patch from scratch' video where I record myself making one of these patches from scratch (imaginative name I know). The only problem is that I often take minimum an hour to do so, as I often set up a patch, don't like it, break it down and try another, listen to it in the background, tweak some settings, try re-patching some modulation in a different way.... no-one wants to watch that! But maybe I will do something along those lines in the future. What do you think?
