Phase 6: Restart after your prime. Reading the comments I feel like a lot of guys like me aren’t addressed by this episode. I’m 36 years now and had a pretty decent running vertical 10 years ago (about 35 inches), but never did any specific training program, just JUMP every day. Struggling with a lot of injuries (there might be a connection... ;) ) including two unhappy triades (ACL), I quit my basketball career. Now in my 30s I got a big motivation boost to dunk again, but my (running) vertical dropped a lot. However, I did a lot of weight training very consistent over the years, but I lost a lot of explosiveness. BUT my standing vertical (probably because of more power) is still the same, if not better. As a started following your channel and started training my explosiveness, doing plyos etc... my vertical increase rapidly! I’m pretty sure that I can regain my previous record, if not beat it a couple of inches because I’m “unlocking” my potential - even that I’m over 35. I will start the vert code the moment the gyms in gernany will open again (COVID sucks) - and we will see where it will take me. ;) last words: I’m really enjoying your channel and podcast!! Cheers

A few guys on here (myself included) drew some bleak conclusions after watching this. Here I am, age 34, still making super slow gains and feeling like my days are numbered before it was all over for me. I got pretty down about it. I absolutely don't think that's what Paul intended. After listening to more of his shows I'm seeing that there are so many ways to improve your vertical jump that unless you're a professional with 10k hours of high quality practice behind you, you've probably still got untapped potential. This is especially true for the skill and technique end which, as far as I can tell, doesn't care how old you are. 7:26 might be Paul's most important statement to take away from this episode. Nobody knows how much you can gain, and you only have two choices: 1) Go get it and MAYBE you get gains maybe not or 2) Overthink it and give up, guaranteeing you never reach your max.

I feel you on this comment. I am 37 and getting back into basketball. I am 6ft and 15years ago I could put half my forearm on the rim. As I watched this I wondered, will I be able to pass my younger self's vert, I feel I can and will. Today I played for the first time in a very long while and I was able to grab the rim. Never in my life have had actual training so I am looking forward to see what this program will do.

Stay with it man. I'm 30 years old still grinding as well. Trying to get back to the windmill after years of knee pain and not even jumping at all. I have my bleak days as well but there is always something we can improve at. I think so much of it is mental, especially when you have tasted what it's like at one point in your life to be truly explosive. If you make it a priority, you will succeed. I'm having to take steps backwards to take steps forward and sometimes that's what it takes. Let's get it!!!

Great comments very enlightening. I just finished phase 1 of Vert Elite Goal, and I approached exactly the way that you mentioned. I mostly looking for a way to be able to play basketball longer and still a good feel on the court. I am 42 years old 1.79 cm(about 5’ 10”) and only play pick up and corporate tournaments but because of how competitive I get I need a program that helped me recover agility, core strength and minimizes my injuries imbalances. I am moving into phase 2 after deload. Appreciate the tips and hope you will continue.

both parents were athletes, grew up as an athletic child and did so much to maintain that. I always ran, jumped everywhere, I was always an active child but then i started to do other things that i feel led me to get injured. i wasn't educated on certain things like sports or weight training and i just jumped into it which i feel led me to overuse and overall break down my own body. im 18 now and i feel like im 50 some days... but im trying to ease back into things so i can ultimately get close to what i could've been.. maybe not meet my potential but get somewhat close
@FlemetAeton
@FlemetAeton Жыл бұрын
I've been there. When I was 13, I felt like I was 50+ too. Being active really destroyed my body. I had multiple surgeries and my doctor said I had degenerative hip arthritis and would need a hip replacement by age 24. Another doctor was going to fuse my feet bones together because I had no cartilage between my feet bones. My knees were "bone on bone". I couldn't sit up straight in class because my back hurt so bad. I couldn't walk up stairs because of my knee pain. I'm 25 now and I feel younger than I did than I was 13. I still have some pains, but that's because I do 1RM exercises than I should. The combination of nutrition, intentionally designed exercise programs, and sleep quality is what did it. I don't have hip pain anymore. I never needed my feet bones to be fused, and I feel like I'm nowhere near my peak. Be warned -- the field of nutrition is filled with marketing tactics that will divert you into the wrong direction. Learning about marketing tricks and psychology can help you identify if information is sincere or not.

If I'm 14 (8th grade) and have been riding bikes a lot when I was little and playing tag and playing infection in 5th grade recess and then I improve my vertical from 19 inches to 28 inches from March 2019 to November 2019 ( during summer i did leg workouts almost every day, high rep dumbbell deadlifts, bulgarian split squats lunges etc )but stopped training from November 2019 to March 2020 because of basketball (November to march I improved to 30 inches because I was jumping a lot and sometimes doing leg workouts, not a lot thought) what phase would i be in: growth spurt phase or honey moon phase and if I'm in the growth spurt phase should I continue doing the same exercises I've been doing from March 2019 to November 2019 and I'll see same results or similar results or am I in a honey moon phase and should switch up my exercises and do things I haven't been doing before like complex training or super low rep high weight? Thanks in advance

18:57 actually in general most of basketball players (not just the NBA that includes also high leagues in Europe South America or all national basketball teams of the world or just basketball in general no matter the level) don't work on their vertical their main focus of training are fundamentals rather than great vertical or jump training that's a fact don't get me wrong they are some that really work on their vertical but they are very few.

I'm 37 years old, I used to have a 40in vert. Over the years I've been suffering from plantar fasciitis, an arthritic knee, and patellar tendonitis. I try to train and get back in shape but I have extreme knee pain. Is it over for me? LOL. I feel like if I were not in so much pain I could still jump relatively high but right now I fear even trying to jump my hardest because of the pain. HELP!

Don't give Up! I was in your sitution too with bad jumpers knee. Do isometric training for your quads. Do it everyday 4-5 sets of 45 seconds holds. Use various positions to hold isometrics. Switch them up from time to time. For example: reverse nordic hold, sissy squat, spanish squat, squat on steep surface. for single leg: rear foot elevated split squat,.. never work through more than 2/10 pain. Be intuitive. Sometimes take day off. Doing this got me rid of Jumpers knee in 40-50 days. I can now jump 5 days in a row on Concrete and my knees don't hurt at all. But I still do isometric holds as a prevention..feel free to ask anything if you want. Just don't give up

And play variety of different sports too (just casually with your friends etc, no need to get competitive) and when you think you're ready, get the vert code bodyweight if you can. D'Angelo Russell it could yes, however that depend on many many factors. Vertical training alone does not directly translate to horizontal speed. There 2 very different and complex skills. Its like saying getting really strong in a overhead press maximizes your flat bench 1rm or has any noticeably significant transfer. It could possibly have some affect yes, but to what extent exactly, depends on the athlete.
