02Q/02M FWD to AWD Conversion. Plus gear set!

This video just popped up in my feed... I did a FWD to AWD 02Q conversion a few years ago. I wish this video was out then when I did it. I was basically going off of a ton of research and measurements to make sure it would fit / work. Awesome that more people are doing this now. It's way less expensive than sourcing an AWD transmission that is otherwise the same.

My 02Q in my R had 4th gear failure from track use. its not just power, but wide sticky tires and going around corners also doesn't help. I'm only making 340tq. and the trans failed at 40,000km with about 5-7k of that on track. Currently looking at these mods myself because there isn't much you can do about it, besides going to the wreckers and pulling spares out of other broken R's. The 02Q/M is not a robust design unfortunately.

You're not taking out any bearings or races without taking the trans apart. That should be pretty obvious.

I just dropped an LSD in my MKV 02Q and noticed it had excessive in/out play on the input shaft. Apparently the early 02Q’s have a tendency to have the outer race of the large ball bearing spin in the case and machine the aluminum which creates the play. I made custom shims to eliminate the play and used Loctite 680 retaining compound to hopefully stop the spinning. Something to look out for when building these transmissions.

Definitely one of the best 6spd tutorials out there. Good Job! Maybe it was a good idea to replace the plastic sliders that goes into the steel shifter forks with some bronze sliders. Also i wish this video explained just a little bit more on how to determine the drill point for the inputshaft support bracket since it doesn't come with instructions and there isn't much really out there.

This was never intended to be a tutorial. However the input shaft support is a no brainer, it can pretty much only go over way. Just take a couple measurements and that's it. No instructions needed.

ALSO ON LOW BUDGET WOT TO USE-FWD-AWD ON 2004 Dodge Neon/*PT Cruiser 2.4 dohc N.A all motor EDZ engine* it's block is identical to lancer GSX,Galant Eclipse,earlyEvo's4g63 /480a & 2.4EDV=Turbocharged version PT-GT Which is the SRT-4 motor the diferences between them is the head fitted to each motor & if has a cast block or aluminium used & if the oil feed blank is drilled+tapped for a turbo the dipstick neck & crank position gear on turbo & srt-4 has more teeth so easier to tune than the N.A all motor models not mention sohc as not applicable to me.& evo has a bit less material on block/can be grinded away to marry the evo trans but that may only be on post 2005 models or a differce with the evo-x transmission but they will all ☆"mojo swap tops"~this was a book in my childhood this truck swapped its body as & wen it wanted to )☆JoeDog☆&myK-9☆Buddie☆

If you're trans has the bolt holes for the angle drive then yes. But as mentioned you need the AWD diff to drive the angle drive.

Yes, but it needs to remain the same transmission so 02q or 02m. Meaning if you have an 02m you can't switch to an 02Q AWD trans or vise versa. The clutches are different between 02m and 02Q.

Thanks. Its not really a trick, they either need them, or don't. This one has a shim already and lash was fine. It's typically the 02ms I've needed to repair more than anything in regards to the input shaft play.

Depends on the gearset. Stock is mostly pressed on stuff so you will need press and misc setups to get things on and off.

@@prisonr506 if you're talking about stock stuff the dealer. Typically we don't fix them if it's just stock stuff, it's generally cheaper just to chuck a salvaged one in. If you're trying to do something like this as upgrades then yes it makes sense.

@@kobusburger3800 the depth wil be Wrong for the axle flange on that side. It's longer on AWD to go into the angle drive. So no. Won't work. Put it up for trade /sale for a fwd unit.

I have a couple questions. Will these parts work for the 6 speed in a 2020 Mk7.5? My second gear synchro is gone under 20k miles and I can’t seem to find parts for this anywhere unless I’m overlooking something based on a separate trans code? There’s not a lot of clear information out there to really make this as easy as it should lol, from what I’ve read the 2020 GTI has the 02Q 6speed in it, but I can’t seem to locate any internal trans parts, anywhere, even from the dealer 🤷‍♂️ forgive me if this seems like a dumb comment, I’m kind of out of options looking around and need a little guidance. Would also like to know where I could find some upgraded shift forks as well, might as well upgrade if I open the case 👀

There should be no problem purchasing parts from dealer. With that said it won't be cheap and we generally would just source another transmission. However yes all this can be done to a mk7 transmission.

None was of yet, but it was ever so slightly lower than the case so I don't expect issues.

I really don't understand why everybody get mad on that bad 02M tranny.. to make it decent they have to reinforce here and there with primary shaft inner bar, both shafts twin bars, 4th gear block, special forks and inserts. They better go with 02A/02J old one. There's no reinforcing parts with it other than lsd and straight cut gear multiple choice sets but they raced with it for decades! Plus nobody tells 02j/02M new gen use new bad synchro type while old 02A/02J use old classic big synchros.. this makes wild difference!

Do you happen to know the symptoms of a bad input shaft bearing ? I’m getting a rattle/vibration while driving and it’s less while idling but once I press the clutch pedal in the noise/vibration goes away. Would really appreciate your input. Thank you

All depends on the transmission you're referring too. But if it's still has a dual mass flywheel that could easily be it.

@@COMotorsports it’s a 2013 Golf R. I think the transmission is a 02Q4. I recently replaced the clutch assembly to a dkm stage 3 twin disk clutch. Everything was fine. Put about 1400 miles on it and now I’m hearing that noise I described. Haven’t been able to find much info about input shaft bearings.

I have a 2014 TDI with an 02Q in it and i swapped my flywheel to a solid one from the dual mass factory one. I then had syncros on 1 and 3 fail. Its still driveable now that i have the OE flywheel back in, i was just wondering if you guys have dealt with that before?

Not sure what you mean, The AWD diff comes in AWD transmissions and are splined to except the angle drive. FWD diffs don't have that, which is why you need the AWD diff, or AWD transmission.

I’ve got a issue with my ring gear & output shaft mating gears. The ones that are permanently attached to the output shafts. Both have missing teeth & the ring gear has damage aswell. Do you know if you can replace the output shafts? any help would be really appreciated

Grab another transmission. use it, or rebuild with match parts.

Yes as long as it had the bolt holes, and you still require AWD diff.
