I was at this game. Super exciting, but Fedorov got absolutely ridiculed by the fans, especially in the pre-game skate. I'll admit I was on the anti-Fedorov train too when he first left but looking back on it now as an adult I feel bad. He was a monster in Detroit and helped get us 3 cups. The dude will always be a legend in motown.

I was never mad at him. I was disappointed as HELL, but there MUST have been more to this than we know. A lot more came out in Maxim Magazine. (Of all places) I thought he’d come back, nut the gas tank was truly EMPTY right after this season and maybe he knew it. Plus Datsyuk was coming on! FAST …like a jet plane in the rear view mirror! But He was playing SUPER INTENSE High Pressure Hockey since Age 4!!

I was furious at him as a 13 year old for "betraying" his team, but now as an adult, there's no way that his jersey number shouldn't be retired in Detroit.

@@michaelwhitaker9719 It won't be due to his acceptance of Carolina's offersheet in 1998. That's a whole other story about Illitch and Karmanos though. Essentially, in a pissing match between billionaires, Karmanos gave Fedorov a contract offer that would be good for his team, and financially terrible for the Wings. Fedorov accepted, earning $28 million for playing 43 games in the 98 season in which he held out. The Illitch family seems to be big on loyalty to taking care of their players. Sergei's acceptance of the offer and forcing Illitch to struggle to match it was likely considered an enormous offense. As long as the Illitch family owns the team, 91 won't be retired. I, too, was a teenager when he left for the Ducks. I'm okay with his number not being retired until he talks things out with the Illitch family.

Don't feel bad. He was my favorite. My mom named our dog after him. He betrayed us, plain and simple. He deserved all the hate now just as much as he did then. Once something is done, it can't be undone. No amount of time can change that. I hope we never hang his number in the rafters. Traitors don't deserve to be glorified next to Stevie Y and Mr. Hockey.

I hate that people use that contract as an excuse. People use job offers from other companies to leverage a pay increase all over the world. But if an athlete does it, its the worst thing thats ever happened. Not to mention, Fedorov was an absolute MONSTER in the playoffs that year.@@tweekins

If we figured out what letting Feds walk meant to the future of the Wings, then no one would have boo'd. ANA signing Fedorov to that massive contract was the best thing for the Redwings who were about to enter salary cap hell in 05/06. Datsyuk would have hopped back over to RUS since DET wouldn't of been able to pay the man what he was worth let alone asking. It'd make a great video for a content creator to cover. Feds was my legit idol growing up. So odd looking at that statement as an adult now.

Federov played 13 years for the Redwings, won three cups. Willingly switched to *defender* for the team. Booing him showed no class. Imagine working for a company for 10 years, only to return and get booed? Anyway, good memories.

He didn't leave Detroit. Fed was kicked off because his agent talked to other teams even though Fedorov said he would never leave Detroit. Ilitch was furious and pulled the offer of the table. Fed never wanted to leave Detroit.

If he had it to do allover again he wouldn’t have left. His stats and career crashed. Then he ended up at Columbus to hit rock bottom. I remember watching this game. Living in KY I had to order center ice to watch the wings. You could tell on TV the Joe was loud that night. It had playoff atmosphere with the fact the ducks swept them the year before and Fedorov joined them. They had a sliver of revenge that night.

Agree. Whatever the reason was the he left, it was a massive downturn for him. He would have been an top NHL legend if he'd stayed. Maybe 5-6 cups instead of 3. Best player I've ever seen.

Sergei may not have been committed to the Red Wings, but he was committed to hockey. He had a recession, a crisis in the game and with a change of team he hoped to find his best game. But the years take their toll and this did not happen. But Sergei might have regretted more if he had not tried to change something in his career.

They were mediocre that year but sergei was better than solid for the ducks, with 31 goals that season. Its a shame he didnt get more than 5 games playing with teemu selanne but our gm at the time hated #91 and they shipped him off. Ducks made it to the conference finals that year. Sergei could have helped that run.
