The spike on the telco clip was used for the old style 1-pair telephone drops, they had very thick insulation and heavier solid wire. They were also not a twisted pair.

Oh that's interesting did not know that, I was thinking it was for thicker insulated cables so I was partially right. I'm guessing that was the two wire drop prior to the four wire drop? Is that such a thing that I am picturing, because currently at my house the drop looks like it's landscaping light cable and it goes up a few feet to what looks like a splice. There's a downed line by the road dangling off the pole that looks the same, it's very possible this development was cheaply put in from many reasons.

I use the CableTracker 10 by Psiber for blinking switch ports. It has 3 different blink patterns, and can generate tone too. ($60) If you connect a LED to the right sized resistor and a RJ45 plug you can build set full of plugs for identifying jacks in an unpowered ethernet patch panel. (Pins 4 & 5). I have a old Lan Toner AT8L by Tempo too that doesn't blink ports anymore, (that part 'fried') so I've switched to the CableTracker 10 for 'most' everything.

On a telephone test clip, the spike was used to byte trough unjacketed, single pair phone drop line. Nowadays, it's main use is with foil splices (common name: tel-splice). These connectors are almost exclusively use on main/distribution phone cables; I haven't seen these extensively used anywhere else as they require a pricy crimping tool.

Reenactor Guy From Wikipedia: In a departure from both 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T uses four lanes over all four cable pairs for simultaneous transmission in both directions through the use of echo cancellation with adaptive equalization called hybrid circuits[16] (this is like telephone hybrid) and five-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-5).

The Fluke IntelliTone Pro is just about all you should need. I have used that almost exclusively, for about six years now, to trace from the desktop all the way back to the switch port. It takes a little practice listening to the tone because the signal will get cross talk in cable bundles and at the switch, but it is totally doable and when you are at the switch and you think you have the right cable, you can plug it to the back of the wand to verify absolutely.

We use cable locators to find buried utilities. Basically the same thing, just bigger and much more expensive. The latest one I bought was RD8100 for 6500 USD. We often use induction to apply the signal instead of a direct connection. This can be done with an antenna in the transmitter or with a signal clamp.

Looks like I have been through the same process as you when buying tone and trace equipment. I have a love hate with the Fluke, also watch out for the amber light when you turn the probe on, means low battery and caught me out a couple of times. Recently bought another tone and prob that our main Telco uses here in the UK. Haven't had much success with it (Greenlee device) and gone back to the Fluke. I also have an Ideal Networks Lan tracer mainly due to its line length measurements. Quite innexpenvice however won't tone if it detects power.

A few cinematography points to maybe help you really shine! I just discovered your channel and ive watched most of your videos now (espeically loved the little office, big remodel video) Softboxes: For your "At the desk" series, invest in some cheap soft box lighting to begin with to give your space even lighting so you and your components arent cast in shadow, the even lighting also helps to give a really "professional" looking video! Camera Mounting: Now I know most of your content is shot from what looks like a head cam or something similar and that definitely works for you when youre in the subfloor, ceiling, crawlspace etc. Again cheap static mounting options could really help you set the state in some of your working environments! Something like a mini portable tripod like a knock off gorilla pod with flexible legs would be amazing to have in shots where youre working in ceildings and you can mount the tripod to any surface to shoot video rather than trying to hold the camera in one hand and do your work with the other, it also gets rid of the poorly framed, shakycam method of self videoing you currently have ( there are obvious exceptions to this like when you were on the ladder in that grocery store Timelapsing: I thnk a lot of your fans would love, and i mean absolutely love to see timelapse shots of your working in certain areas i.e at the combing/routing cables. In the subfloor installing new brackets and runs. this flows into using a mount/tripod to set the shot up and let it play as you work, this allows you to not have to worry about narrating or holding the camera as you go and allows you to potentially better focus on your work even. Narration/Backround music: I think you have the potential to include these into your videos were applicable. Your voice is very easy to listen to and you explain things very clearly, very concisely. You dont have any obvious accent (im australian, you all have accents to me lol) and that makes your ability to keep people interested in what you have to say easier becaue that dont have to exert effort trying to decipher your accent. The backround music is mostly in addition to timelapse video sections, it may not mean much but it shows your audience you take pride in your video production (even just elevator music works, nothing with lyrics, i know most youtubers like using soft electronic and "coffee shop music" All in all i know youre a busy guy i recently watched your "it got worse" video. and If i could do it all for you I would. Id highly recommend you watch a few videos by other tech tubers such as "bitwit" "pauls hardware" "jayztwocents" and simlilar people to see how they light their studio spaces and pick up a few tips on how they edit and produce their videos Youve been an amazing source of knowledge and life experience in the networking field as im currently in university studying to be a network engineer. Thank you so much for all your videos fibre ninja i cant wait to see you get back on your feet! (so to speak)

5:22 hey that RadioShack tester that was my second one it kind of got me started. Somebody gave me a single line one from RadioShack on a stick and it snapped off the stick so I decided to upgrade. It was nice to finally know if the wires were right not just by looking at everything. I actually modded mine to have a jack on the opposite side and it came in very handy for testing cables, verify the jack is correct flip it around and then verify the cable is correct. Accidentally plugged mine into a digital phone line and had to replace the LED, and this year I decided that since everything on the front was rubbing off it was time to re-label. I lived out in the middle of nowhere and the phone trunk line ended at our house and they ran spurs down to the two other neighbors needless to say we would get our problems fixed and then the neighbors would have problems and vice versa. I can't say I work in the industry although I do computer support so a little bit of everything. Just got my first toner and butt set this year wish I had them years ago, I started with just an old phone and then I got a telephone build it myself kit that became my testset.

Consider looking at the Noyafa NF-8601W-A tester. It can slow blink a gigabit port, tone/probe, POE map/voltage, Ping, wire length, wire map, BNC test, 8 map probes and more but that should cover most uses. It also has a decent LCD color screen and Lithium batteries charged by micro usb just like most phones today. There are different models with different components included priced accordingly. But run about $130 for the biggest.

The nail on battery covers are intentional. It keeps the batteries from flying out if the tool is dropped. They all use standard screw drivers in any electricians belt. (Many Fluke tools also have it. I have many Fluke tools and nearly all of them have screw-on battery covers.)

The big spike is for 16 or 19g wire, the insulation is a lot thicker.also for piercing the jacket on Buried service drops or piercing paint on an electric box.also you don't need two batteries for the tempo toner. It only drains one for tone, resistance, capacitance and level. The talk Battery uses both batteries. If you killed one by leaving it on, then you can pop it open and swap the battery and toss the dead one.
@crazyt1483

I suspect that the detection of the power grid might just be for if you worked with an electrician or have to check if a power cable is in the preferred state. An alternative could be that when you make a hole in the wall, ceiling or floor there isn’t a electric line behind it.

Not sure if you're into a slightly higher-tech device, but check out the "Pockethernet." It does port blinking, toneing, connectivity test, Wiremap, PoE check, TDR to measure wire length AND tell you which pair is broken at what length, Basic link test, CDP/LLDP information, heck it can even capture packets. Costs around $200, but that and a Probe is pretty much all I use anymore.

Regarding the LAN Toner 2, a feature I have found useful, especially on a long cable run, to better detect the tone, there is the ability, where safe to do so, to generate the tone leg and leg across different pairs. This reduces the inherent capability of CAT5 cables, due to the construction, in reducing the "leakage", through the cable, to make the tone more audible. Hope you find this helpful.

@fiberninja I got a Noyafa NF-308 for about 40 dollar from Aliexpress a while ago. This is a cheap Chinese tester, but has many functions and a LCD display. One of the functions is the port flashing function. It also has mirewap, pair&length, coax/tel function. It comes with a toner as well with several adapter cables and earphones. You can even get extra wiremap modules to test multiple cables at the same time. I'm very happy with it. Not sure how long it will survive because of the quality, I don't use it that much. But it's a cheap but very extensive tester. Maybe a good idea to test this one?

Love the videos, I have a half rack at home and its a mix of servers and networking gear, now the most efficient way to wire this would be to mount the networking gear in the rear but I love to be able to see all the status lights from the front of both the servers and the networking gear. Right now all of my cables are run through a cable management 1U arm but it just doesn't look tidy enough for me, but I like the fact that there are no connections to troubleshoot. My alternative would be to install a keystone feed through panel and then maybe one more in the rear of the rack, would this be overkill? Have you ever heard of someone connecting a keystone feed through panel from the front of a rack to the rear?

To get the light to blink connect a laptop to the cable and go to a website and see which lights are blinking on the switch. Then unplug the laptop and see which port is no longer blinking. I think this should work. Take an old Android Phone that isn't used anymore. You might need to root it depending on the carrier it was purchased from. Now the key to this is purchase an OTG cable and a USB Ethernet adapter. Turn off the phone's WiFi and hopefully the Adroid will activate the Ethernet adapter. Now you'll need an app to do continuous Pinging. This should work.

What it does is display a IP address if it gets one from DHCP then it pings google.co.za and if it receives a reply it adds a little icon to the screen. Might be able to make it blink the port aswell by timing packets , will let you know. PS in its current state it saved me countless times, also made one that tests wifi using a esp8266 :)

What about taking your loopback that you made and putting a couple of capacitors into it to build up a small electrical charge then put in a gate that would open and close at a set amount of time to trigger the lights on the switch.
@FiberNinjaStudios

It still wouldn't work on a gigabit switch so that's out. Besides, in reality I'd like to have a genuine port connection created through something like a Rasberry Pi that is small and cheap enough but still does the job.
@m2kkillshot
@m2kkillshot 6 жыл бұрын
RaspberyPI would be a great option to use as there is a dedicated OS for pentesting that includes packet sniffers as well as other utilities, however making a compact all in one unit with a built in touch screen would not be all that cheap. You can print your own case if you have a 3d printer and save on the case option but you would still need a small 3.5 to 7 inch touch screen to hook up the Pi and then you would need to consider power options weather you want to build in your own lithium battery pack or power it off of a wall adapter or off of a portable powerbank similar to the one that you would use to charge your phone on the go. again it is a very good possible option I was trying to think of a solid state method to blink the LED on the switch that would not require any additional power or items to work.

Testers that can perform a port blink are nice. And some are somewhat inexpensive. I don't know of any cheap models that perform that function. I have a few devices that will, but honestly I never use it. You really don't ever need a port blink. The toner already does the job of identifying the port for you.

No, I don't think I'm going to get the chance with coax. All of the locations I'm hitting up with coax are already in-service and I won't be able to test any of them unless I bring something down.

For port blinker, maybe something like raspberry pi with simple script that would make it go through 10 mb, 100 mb, off links and/or it probably can generate trafic through port.

I just bought a Noyafa multipurpose tester on amazon. Don't know how long it will really hold up... But it does indeed have a port blink function along with a bunch of other functions for about $50. I'm thinking about returning it and getting the Byte Brothers Real world certifier. Any thoughts regarding cable certification tools? Love your videos BTW... Really inspired me to reevaluate my standards for hard work when running cable and doing cable management at work. Keep up the great videos!

Maxwell Maxwell just get a fluke dsp or dtx model. They are both older so they won't cost as much as the new versiv model.

The BB certifier is questionable at best. I don't actually believe it performs what the industry considers an ethernet cable certification at all. I almost fell for it myself but when I dug into the features of their "real world" tool, there was nothing there beyond basic continuity testing. Ikk have to check out the Noyafa tool. Thx! Is there a particular model you got?

+Mike Walling For under $500 though? I've looked around quite a bit and haven't found any older equipment that comes close to being in my price range. If you've got a link to a dsp or dtx model your referring to though I'd appreciate it! I really just want to see what i'm working with for about 18 retail locations that I now manage. Whoever installed and maintained the equipment previous to me did a horrendous job.

The NF-388-B, Build quality is pretty shotty though. Also check out the NF-8601W-A. Lot of reviews here on youtube for that model. All it really adds is an lcd screen and ping functionality for $75 more.

Fluke dtx 1800 (aboit to be discontinued) or dsx 5000 is the only way to go. You can probably get the dtx for a great price now and even a dsp 4000 would be way better than some of these other options. Fluke just does it best and is accepted by all that require cable certifications

Holy cow those are expensive even used! Then again, I'm not aiming to perform cable certification -just better diagnostics and troubleshooting. Man, to think I was complaining about a few hundred for the Intellitone set!

They sure are. I had the pleasure of getting to use DSP-4000's when I was in school learning this stuff. If you've never done cabling and checking your work with one of these, it's hard to believe how touchy it can be especially with long runs to get it to pass the test.

If you are in the US, the harbor freight toner and probe set I show should work perfectly. Just k ow that you don't have to connect both clips and use 2 wires. You CAN send tone through just a single wire. The problem with electrical wiring is that it is often spliced in and out of several branches throughout the building and that means it will spread that tone signal across all of them. Chances of you finding the other side are slim unless you k ow the other ends have been disconnected.

I think the use of a raspberry PI would be fine. The Auto MDIX on the ports is probably what messes it up and you might as well just use a fully functional ethernet port to test.

I like the these videos where you show off different products you use / used. It helps either someone just getting into the field or someone that is in it but doesn't know that X product exists. For the gigabit loopback device: I had made a loopback for locating where wires go (just a home owner). I know it worked for fast ethernet but never tested it on gigabit. Once you said that I tried mine on my Monoprice gigabit switch and it did the same thing as yours (not lighting up the port). I did find this product on Amazon www.amazon.com/Networx-Gigabit-RJ45-Loopback-Tester/dp/B00E4OKGDE and I have no idea if it will lightup a gigabit port or not but for $8 doesn't seem too bad. The reviews seem mixed for gigabit use.

For port blinking, you could probably get away with a cheap Mikrotik router, like the hAP Lite (About $20 USD). Power it off of a USB battery pack and write a super simple scheduled script that disables/enables the interface and optionally send some pings out of that interface. As an ISP network admin / field tech, those cheap Mikrotik routers are the best swiss army knife in my laptop bag. It's even better if you grab a more expensive model (Such as the "hEX", no WiFi though) with a built-in speaker (Just a simple beeper), you can beep at specific tones and durations with the scripting feature in response to whatever you like, such as pings coming through, ports coming up, WiFi signal strength, ect.

"Network Advisor" has a good idea to make port lights blink by using a laptop and batch file to disable and re-enable the laptops NIK at regular intervals causing the link lights to blink at the switch. Not as convenient or refined as a dedicated tester but does the job. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5K7aqxueaibe9k I am sure you could easily use a raspberry pi to run a similar batch file set to wake on LAN for this purpose. Great videos keep them coming!
