Met office getting their knickers in a twist again about normal winter weather in the uk. In the 50s and 60s we just got on with it
@29silkyКүн бұрын
In the 50s and 60s virtually nobody was supported to live in their homes by carers driving between many people, with only short appointments and no slack. Now around 1 million people rely on such care. This is just one example (of many) that our country has set itself up in the name of "efficiency", and means that anything that impacts things such as transport and utilities effects many people in a significant way that it did not 60 to 70 years back.

I lived in Surrey growing up and we had 2-3ft drifts of snow. Global warming has halted us getting the white stuff nowadays, such a shame.

No sweetheart, many died. My father was driving over Shap in snow and came across a wagon driver frozen stiff in his cab. I bet a warning might have saved his life. Old folk froze to death in isolation. Not yo mention the incredible increase in traffic since the olden times.

Do you not want updates on weather warnings? Just to be aafe?
@andrewshields5322Күн бұрын
This is how I forecast the weather and I live in the Cheviots. 1 look out the window, if I can see the lights on in the farm on the other side of the valley its not raining/ snowing. 2 look up at the sky the cloud formation is an advanced indicator of coming weather. 3 in winter watch birds like geese they always migrate away from bad weather. Now for safe travel. 1 fit your vehicle with winter tyres from end of September till the beginning of May. 2 In snow or ice keep your speed down and use your engine/gears to slow down well in advance of needing to stop. 3 have thick coat flask of tea or coffee and some snacks and a shovel in your boot. And finally because this is getting long, an old mountaineering saying, Never shut the back door on yourself, always have a bail out plan.

So here in the SE, it will snow overnight for a short period, but pretty much melt as it turns to rain by Sunday morning? As much as I enjoy a decent snowy day, the disruption it causes is a pain. Thanks for the excellent forecast as always 👍🏼

Wish we could get some decent snowfall here in Morecambe, but it hardly ever snows here because of the airborne salt from the bay.
@stephenclark9917Күн бұрын
Having Heysham power station round the corner also raises the sea temperature, so Morecambe gets its own hot water bottle. I lived in Morecambe in 1988 and remember one stormy day in what is otherwise a very placid bay.
@bobbybearing1767Күн бұрын
@@stephenclark9917 I was here then too. I remember that storm back in '88, lots of chimney pots and slates blown off roofs. I remember winter 1995 when we had knee deep snow in Morecambe, never seen that since. Where are you living now?

@depmil1Күн бұрын
Freezing rain? This has been mentioned as a possibility on previous Met Office forecasts.
@rambledogs2012Күн бұрын
Because the air above is warmer. As the rain comes down, it can pass through a thin layer of cold air that is 0c or below but it doesn't have time to freeze by the time it hits the ground.

Im just wondering, how is it possible that my forecast says its going to be -1 and have a windchill factor of -6 consistently for 12 hour and only 6 of them hours are heavy snow and then its suddenly heavy rain? Surely its not possible for it to be raining in temperatures like that? Im in buxton just as a fyi! I'm just curious is there a unique type rain to be expected??

Will it snow properly in edinburgh, or will it just be sleet and rain mixed with snow?
@pelliqs922Күн бұрын
Likely about an inch of snow turning into rain or sleet by the middle part of tomorow
@bonnetdedoucheКүн бұрын
Will be rain and sleet across central belt between Edinburgh/Glasgow, probably get the odd snow shower inbetween but nothing compared to North England and the Border. But weather changes like the weather so if that band moves a little further north than expected (as it can do) then may see a bit more snow up into central and lothians. My money is on a sleety late morning followed by a rainy afternoon then a few sleet and snow showers later in the evening and overnight into Monday.

Except it didn't carry on. Schools shut, food was running out in the shops as deliveries couldn't be made, water pipes froze and burst as houses were not insulated as they are now. No running water from the taps due to freezing. People suffered greatly. So life didn't 'carry on'.
