Customer, "it wasn't overheating." Well, no coolant, means the coolant temp sensor was not measuring any heat, just hot air in the coolant passage. Customers, please, never rely on the reservoir bottle as the actual coolant level. Let the engine cool down, and if it has a radiator cap, remove it and check the actual coolant level and condition. Have a blessed and safe week to you and your family.

This is about 5 days late. I just had to diagnose a bent intake valve on a toro workman that I got at auction. They said it turns over and no water in oil. Turns out water ran through an exposed intake and filled the cylinder. Engine was hydro locked and water in the oil. After I cleaned it up and put it back together (new gasket) I had no compression. One thing that stands out is the bent intake valve caused a lot of gas to get pushed up the valve guide and into the oil. I could smell the gas when I pulled the oil cap off. Great diagnosis steps, I could have been more efficient if I had watched this first!

From a distance, it looks like there are corresponding marks on both #5 piston and on the head. Is it possible that "debris" has gone down the intake and entered the cylinder? Just for curiosity, I'd take a look at the valve faces and seats to see if there is an "exit wound" where the valve was unable to fully close. Maybe this would explain bent valves without piston damage, and could possibly cause the timing chain tensioner to give way with the shock load.

Hi Matt, nice one bro👍 But where did that missing coolant go? Maybe someone changed the oil recently and just dumped it into one of those trolley oil catch tanks and of course wouldn't see coolant in the oil. Perhaps it had a minor coolant leak that steamed off slowly, water pump etc...no biggie if that goes with the old engine I guess. Could've been consuming coolant (head gasket leak) and sending it out the tail pipe without causing a noticable external leak?...I guess we'll never know, unless it causes the same thing to happen again to a replacement engine..lol. Perhaps a radiator or hose leak, or even a heater core leaking under the front carpets?...Best to check that one out pretty thoroughly before calamity #2 happens to the replacement engine🤣👍🇦🇺

I paused at 18:54. Could it make sense that air is leaking by cylinder 4 exhaust valve, and then traveling back up the exhaust mani to cylinder 5 which may have an open exhaust valve and out the spark plug hole? May be a path of less resistance than trying to go out the back of the car.
@SchrodingersBox4 жыл бұрын
A very little could but remember the opening of the exhaust valve is a few millimeters while the exhaust manifold is many many square inches and the flow from the leakdown tester is limited. The best explanation is direct combustion path between cylinders especially for how fast the second cylinder filled with air.

Could be you will need another pint in a few weeks. How long was it since you checked it the first time when it needed a pint added? Very interesting as always! He may not have lied about it not overheating though, the gauge may not have worked. Sometimes if there is no coolant in the engine the temp gauge will actually read normal even if the engine is dangerously hot because there is no coolant to transfer the heat to the sensor, so it only picks up the heat from the steam in the engine and the metal the sensor is screwed into. That happened to me a couple years ago. I was driving down the highway and heard a rattling noise from under the front of my car, which I thought was just the exhaust since it had a broken spring bolt under the header. A couple minutes later I realized something was wrong when it started losing power, so I pulled off the road and stopped to see what was going on and it died out. I found that the water pump failed and leaked all the coolant out and that the engine was severely overheated and cooked even though the temp gauge never even got to half. I didn't have an oil temp gauge back then, but I installed one after that incident. I suspect that an oil temp gauge would have indicated that the oil was hotter than normal when the coolant ran out and I would have been able to stop before the engine was cooked, but hopefully I don't find out LOL.

Schrodingers Box what should the o2 sensor trim and voltage be looking like for a lean condition? Currently my sensors read 0.6V while idling but I’ve seen on some sites that over 0.5V equals a rich condition, when in reality I have a lean condition
@SchrodingersBox4 жыл бұрын
On a lean condition IF the fuel trim can compensate for it, you won’t see any difference with the O2 sensor output. You will see a high LTFT and STFT between -2 and 2. If the lean condition is extreme and the fuel trim can compensate , you will see both trims stuck very high and O2 sensor at .1V. See my videos on fuel trim diagnostics.
@Drake-4 жыл бұрын
Schrodingers Box I see both trims as very high (long term at 15 and short term in the 20s) yet my o2 sensor voltage is still 0.6v for a lean condition... after some research I found it may be possible my 2003 crv has an air/fuel ratio sensor before the cat which May explain the voltage, but the second downstream sensor is the same voltage. I’m convinced it’s my o2 sensors that are causing my code p0171 but I could be wrong so I’d like to know what you think... money is tight so I’d rather not purchase new sensors if I don’t have too
