[047] s03e02 - In Name and Blood (In Birth and Death) - Reid finds Gideon's letter

This scene always makes me both sad and... I don't know. I'm glad for Gideon. He looks much better without all the weight of the victims he couldn't save on his shoulders. But I miss him.

the beginning shot of reid pulling up to the cabin is paralleled with the beginning shot of reid pulling up to find him dead in that same cabin in season 10 episode 14.

Spencer expected to see Gideon again, he ended up getting killed by Donnie Mallick. Spencer was left hurt and devastated over losing the closest thing he had to a father. Rossi assured Spencer that the pain will go away and they’ll stop Mallick. Gideon’s murder was later avenged by Rossi after he shot Mallick.

Gideon felt guilty for not saving Sarah from Frank Breitkopf and he also felt responsible for getting Hotch suspended for two weeks, after what happened in Arizona. Gideon knew that enough was enough, he later resigned. Gideon left his badge, gun, and a letter for Spencer.

Spencer I knew it would be you who came to the cabin to check on me I’m sorry the explanation couldn’t be better Spencer and I’m sorry it doesn’t make sense but I’ve already told you I just don’t understand any of it anymore I guess I’m just looking for it again the belief I had back in collage the belief I had when I first met Sarah and it felt so right the belief in happy endings. Anyone else notice that Gideon had the same color and model of jeep used by serial killers throughout the series.

I think criminal minds have the best goodbye for their characters, the fact it was too much and Gideon knew it was time to quit and he wrote the letter to Spencer not reid but call him by name is just perfect, Gideon found reid and make him a fbi agent he was his mentor but at the end the letter is more as a teammate a friend saying goodbye.

What's particularly impressive about this one is that they didn't plan this. Mandy Patinkin just bailed on his contract and they had to scramble to come up with an ending. Even still, it is a great goodbye for the character. I wish some other shows had writers that were this good. *Cough cough* Grey's anatomy...

son of a bitch gideon left a note for reid, just like his dad did, and gideon knew that, poor reid and i wasn't there to hug him, this just keeps getting worse.

I know they say that his dad left him a note, but in Revelations we see when his father left him and his mom, and Spencer was in the room.

Does anyone else wish that before Gideon left Reid caught him and they hugged? I think that would’ve given Reid the chance to say goodbye that he never got with his father and when Elle left

Because he knew that Spencer is the only one who would need an explanation for closure. Everyone else would be okay but Reid would overthink it.

Aria Goddard he was a father figure to Reid, he helped him with his drug addiction, he ultimately had the biggest impact on Reid during this time. Reid would’ve needed a proper closure, because he wouldn’t have been able to cope otherwise

A father leaving is Reid's issue. This could have been a trigger. But Gideon, rather than speaking to Reid as a father; he spoke to him as a team-mate, someone's who shared the horrors of their work. Gideon eliminated the father aspect so Reid could wholly understand why he left. He wasn't running. He wasn't giving up. This was his time. Reid would know to respect that

It isn't. Gideon just really likes diners. They talk about it in season 10 episode 13.
