Thanks for the video on changing the coolant on a 2006 VTX-R but I've discovered a couple of short cuts. 1) You do not need to completely remove the gas tank. Take out the frame bolt, disconnect the fuel line and vacuum line but no need to disconnect the two electrical harness'. Simply wiggle tank backwards and rest it on the frame for the entire procedure. 2) Empty the coolant reservoir by removing the hose and get it completely empty by blowing air through the filler port. 3) Refill the coolant reservoir through the same filler port. 4) To bleed the air out of the lines run the bike longer than 3-4 minutes, more like 6-8 minutes looking for the fluid in the filler neck moving, almost like a stream. That signifies the thermostat has opened and coolant is flowing through the entire system bringing unwanted air bubbles to the opening. Good luck and TAKE YOUR TIME!

Thank you for the tips. I didn’t discover the expansion tank filler behind the side cover till after I changed it. I really like the idea of using compressed air to blow the expansion tank out.

Do I really need to disconnect hoses and wiring to lift the tank and access the coolant cap? Thanks -- and thanks for helping me change my clutch cable last fall!
@OnTheEdgeNow Жыл бұрын
It seems like it might be a pain, but it gives you an opportunity to check things under the tank that might need to be serviced. It is a good time to check hoses and do a little cleaning in areas you can't usually get to. Glad to hear the videos are helping you out. I think getting to know your bike mechanically makes it more enjoyable knowing you can fix something when it breaks.

is it recommended to drain the coolant, then fill with distilled water and run til the tstat opens then drain and fill with coolant ?

If you do a search on Amizon for motorcycle axillary fuel tanks you will see a few choices. I don't use it often, but sometimes it is easier to work on a motor with the tank off.

What about draining the old fluid from the radiator? Does that have to be done as well?
@OnTheEdgeNow3 жыл бұрын
The drain plug I took out was a low spot in the system. One way to tell you have most of the antifreeze out is to capture it as it is draining, and measure the amount that came out. Compare that with what the manual says the coolant capacity is. If you wanted to flush the radiator I suppose you could take a hose off.

@OnTheEdgeNow2 жыл бұрын
It is 60cc. It is made for mixing up 2 stroke fuel. There are graduations on the syringe marking how much oil to add to the gasoline depending on the fuel mixture ratio. I believe I bought it at Fleet Farm in the automotive section.
