In a previous video we had a look at a customers 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had a customer complaint of the tach and speedo dropping out. We quickly discovered that the CAN B data bus was having some issues and we narrowed it down to the front control module and some corrosion. Now it is time to get it fixed.
-Enjoy!

You are 100% correct. Even folks not in the rust belt will be SOL when (not if) the manufacturer stops supporting the overcomplicated electronics crap. I'm an EE and have done electronics and electromechanical repairs my whole life so I'm not against electronics, give me electronic ignition over points all day long. Node locked modules that require special tools to reprogram are bad enough, making them so they can't be reprogrammed is criminal. For most folks a car is the second largest purchase they will ever make with their house being number one. Imagine if houses worked like cars. Your fridge dies but is node locked to your house. The only fridge that will work with your house is no longer supported and so you find a used one, but you can't program it to work with your house without knowing the guy with the special software to reset (hack) your fridge and then you have to pay $150 to access the house builder's website to program the used, reset, fridge just to get it to work. Nobody would put up with this with their house, but we bend over and take it when it comes to cars. Why?

Good job, Eric! Good job Keith! You probably spent more money to configure the FCM, than it cost you on the salvage yard. You are right, in the future, the antique car shows, will continue to display the same old glories and none of the brave new computers with wheels.

i have an eeprom programmer that allows the data off a dead module to be read and then perfectly burned onto a used good module, effectively cloning the original without going through any manufacturer's rigmarole. old cars will live!

Very impressive! When you were yanking that module off the fuse box I knew I would never have that kind of confidence because I would have caused damage that cost big bucks to fix. I do wish that 20 years ago when I got a computer science degree I had been smart enough to foresee what was happening to vehicles and learned the low level languages to make a tool as you described. Too late now but I have a ton of respect for those who did it and a ton of respect for those of you who trust your skills and resources. Nice job!

Alpha OBD is a great tool for Chrysler Dodge products. I've unlocked options that were unavailable to my truck such as auto down windows and recognizing LED lights. I no longer have errors!

I ordered a HVAC Module from LKQ, gave them the exact part number and recieved a blower resistor, hvac control head centerstack, and a blend door actuator before I received the HVAC Module. Also on a chrysler! 2016 Ram.

Wonder if it would be easier to repair the connector on the module? Even if it was just a wire jumper from the module to the harness. Or are those modules filled with epoxy? Still would be possible for a person without all the test equipment to do. Would be interesting to see inside one of them. Thanks for the video!

I'm hoping sooner than later most of these modules will have "jailbreaks" on them (essentially allow admin access at all levels of the modules to write whatever you want). Disconnect OnStar permanently, upgrade your stereo and configure the original steering controls, learn or delete the TPS, delete the key sensor so any correctly cut key works... So many amazing vehicles will go to the scrap yard because of electronics issues. So many cool engine swaps and parts grafting could be done without these silly barriers. Compare the cost of how many thefts are kept from happening vs how many people had to pay to get a new set of keys reprogrammed... these are just barriers to make money and to make things obsolete.

Super interesting how you accomplished the fix on this car. Expanding your team by using Keith's expertise to enable the 'new' module to be re-configured was excellent and crucial to fixing the problem. I suspect a lot of other shops would have said, "...this module is no longer available--sorry, can't fix this."
