To be fair, by the end of Unicorn, Banagher can just activate Destroy Mode at will. Though when he starts to have full control, the color changes from red to green.

Actually, the psych frame can be activated without a NT. - It just that the psy - communication chips (psycommu) won't enumerate operations, without a certain frequency of brain wave patterns. Aside from the fact that engineers have to be able to access the system for maintenance. That was the whole point of cyber - newtypes. Technically, the psycommu weren't designed for natural newtypes. They were designed for cyberised newtypes, or what we call post-transhumans; post humans with biomechanically enhanced abilities. - Like, Ple. - Char provided the schematics on the psycommu chips because he was curious whether Amuro could use them, or not. The transformation sequence is slightly different from that of the anime for simple real world problem. "Building permit" they had to acquire in order to build this structure does not allow for height change. FYI, in anime, the height of RX-0 is 19.7m in Unicorn mode and 21.7m in Destroy mode.
