@BrowncoatFairy3 жыл бұрын
part of it is the weight, yes, but mostly it's the software, and the fact that it uses electric motors instead of internal combustion. The power output of an internal combustion engine is dependent on adjusting how much fuel and air you inject into a small compartment which then explodes, and those things depend on mechanisms engaging and disengaging, actual physical valves opening and closing, etc, and you can only meaningfully control those mechanical components at about a tenth of a second increments. Physical mechs can only operate so fast. With electric motors, you are managing electrical current, which travels at practically the speed of light, and the speed at which its power can be switched off or on or adjusted to any value in between is only limited by how quickly your computer can send the instructions to do so. The Tesla software controls the throttle based on traction data at a sub-millisecond level. It can adjust the throttle literally a thousand times per second. That's why it hooks up perfectly every time.

quite cool, now more then ever becomes obvious how power rating for ICE is faulty. All engines state peek power that is achieved at usually quite narrow RPM. Obvious solution, proper gearbox with about 16+ ratios seems like a must.
@lemongavine3 жыл бұрын
Right? They are only at peak power for maybe a third of the pass. The other two thirds are the engine trying to climb back up to the peak again. And manufacturers keep tuning their engines to advertise higher peak horsepower, but it’s at the expense of low end torque. They even do this on SUVs which need low end torque, not high end horsepower. Street cars/SUVs need torque, not horsepower.
@ChurchAutoTest3 жыл бұрын
@@lemongavine Have you seen the power curves on a typical modern turbo engine? It's a nearly flat torque curve from 2000-4500 rpm and a flat power curve from about 4500-6000 rpm. And the torque curve is only flat because the manufacturer tunes it that way - unlocked they can make huge torque gains. These are not like Hondas of old. Modern turbo engines make a ton of torque from very low rpm, primarily because high boost DI engines don't really like to rev without some special loving (see Ferrari for example).
@lemongavine3 жыл бұрын
@@ChurchAutoTest I haven’t since 2014 when I switched to electric. Interesting that they are able to do that with direct-injection and turbos now. What about turbo lag? Is that a thing still? Electric is so instant, I don’t know if I could deal with turbo lag.
@BrowncoatFairy3 жыл бұрын
sure, 16 gears that can somehow shift with zero delay or power interruption. that will surely cost and weigh nothing, and be perfectly reliable.
@ChurchAutoTest3 жыл бұрын
@@lemongavine turbo lag will always exist unless we have electrically assisted turbos. But its pretty minor these days if you're above 2000 rpm.

The roadster probably will be faster, but not that much faster simply due to physics and materials that would allow the car to be driven on the street not to mention what a human can endure are already on the edge of limits.
