I'm a bit confused by this system when they simultaneously make 1.21 and 1.20 versions in parallel. because because of this they add to 1.20.(number) what they promised to add in 1.21. thus the meaning of calling the update something disappears. Let's imagine that in some versions like 1.30 an "update of the end" is announced, but during 1.29 almost all chips from the 1.30 update will already be implemented. In this case, it makes no sense to call 1.30 an "update of the end" because most parts of the update of the end were added in 1.29, so it is logical to call 1.29 an "update of the end". We have the same situation now. Everything that was promised to us at the 2023 minecon in version 1.21 is already in 1.20. Therefore, in fact, if some global content is not added to the 1.21 release, then as a result it will be a more technical update and it will be even easier to call it not 1.21.0 but 1.20.6. I could be wrong, but again, I'm a little confused by this system of parallel development of two versions. It is quite possible that it will continue to be so. and what we saw at minecon 2024 will not be added in 1.22 this fall, but will be released in 1.21.1, 1.21.2 and so on

I've had friends who aren't as knowledgeable on Minecraft ask me how to craft items (e.g. the mace, crafter) that aren't released yet because they heard about them so long ago and assumed they must already be in the game. I'm not one to be particularly upset about the lack of updates in this game, but the way they handle them just doesn't work. Announcing new features many months before the actual release just sets up the players for disappointment, and makes it SEEM like they're adding much less than they are. Compare this to something like a Fortnite season, where the players know nothing about it until it drop. That way, everything feels super fresh and new because it's unexpected. I'm not saying Mojang shouldn't announce their updates at all, but they could easily manage the community hate by being a little LESS transparent with the updates and progress.

I think in terms of combat, mojang should make every tool have their own damage thing. Hear me out... So like swords and axes would be the same. The shovel would have a low cooldown as it has a large surface area, and it would also have low damage, as if hitting mobs with a plate. Now, the Hoes and pickaxes (in terms of damage) would deal more damage and have more cooldown, because they would stab the mobs.

It has gotten to the point where we know everything that is going to be in the update now so they should have made the name announcement already. I get that they need to hold off on revealing the update name at Minecraft Live especially if they are going to hold back on revealing features, because if Mojang had revealed at Minecraft Live 2022 that 1.20 was going to be "Tales & Trails" but then only showed Bamboo Blocks, Hanging Signs, Camels, and Chiseled Bookshelves then the player base would have been very confused. But I'm of the mindset that the current way that Mojang is handling announcements at Minecraft Live has almost ruined the show for me. I get that they don't want to overcommit, but they have shifted so far the other way that it seems pointless. If they only want to show finished features, then they should move Minecraft Live to later in the development cycle so that they can show enough features that fully demonstrate what the update is all about and what the name will be. As it stands, they only spent 23 minutes talking about 1.20 at Minecraft Live 2022, and 15 minutes talking about 1.21 at Minecraft Live 2023 (which was only 50 minutes total, which was surprisingly short). If Mojang's (over)reaction to player discontent with unfulfilled commitments expectations is to commit to as little as possible and leave players with no expectations, then feature revealing and hype building activities of the past such as Minecraft Live or the update name reveal almost all of their intended effect.

I remember their first monthly stream during making 1.16 where people got to do a live Q&A and there was this woman constantly saying "we dont know yet" so this hits a bit different for me haha You know 1.20 and 1.21 without a clear theme is not that bad, but honestly it does miss some hype. Now the hype is like 'armor trims!', new biome, crafter, new weapon, and them months of waiting / bugfixes that I wonder does it really take that long to complete the updates. The content in 1.21, with not really difficult new mechanics, feels like an update that could have been out by now. They had the crafter already done for the trailer so the mace and vault were the only real challenges, rest are block variants or just existing features reshaped. Also for having a 15th anniversary, I did expect either the combat system along with these trials updated, or a little more side-content. Since Caves&Cliffs it feels like the are behind the hype. We wanted caves updates for years, not too late to have it, but the archeology came very late, we wanted those dungeons to be updated long ago too, we get this but hmmmm not really a lot of new stuff except for a new weapon. Where are the biome additions from years ago votes, the ambience in the game is lacking - which 1.19 should have done, end update feels ever years away? Would be nice to have a hype again and for example 1.22 can be called with MC Live like the Ambience update, not revealing all yet but then you know it can go into the themes I just talked about, biome additions, possibly even end stuff, and add some real life into the game.

I'm surprised no one seems to remember, or bring it up anyways, I recall in the 2022 Minecraft Live they directly stated that they were switching to delaying the Update Names so as to make sure it matches the end result, due to the backlash of the Wild Update. Trails & Tales also had a pretty vague Theme, though (Creativity and Self-expression), which caused some people to interpret it as the Theme not being revealed either. In any case, 'twas a confusing time for the Community, but it seems like people more or less understand now.

personally i love the shift from announcing it at minecraft life and promising a million things that either never make it into the game or take years to get into the game (*cough cough * caves and cliffs) to announcing stuff as they have basically already developed it fully. it doesnt stop them from making good new content as we've seen and its just better overall so i agree

Tbh, part of me wants them to not name the updates at all. Cus I know when they do, people will be like “oh it’s named this? Then they should’ve included X Y and Z!” But this is a nice middle ground where people won’t be *expecting* those things to be in there and getting mad when they aren’t.
