About Aitfix: some of their latest kits are pretty nice, most of all I appreciate their accuracy, although they continue to have chunky parts and deep engraved lines. That being said, I don't build planes in 1:24th, but I bought some of their latest 1:48th Spitfires and Hurricanes and I have built some of their 1:72th scale jets. A nice surprise was the Swift... And with some indulgence the Harrier and Hawk. I have also been pleased with how their 1:32nd Aston Martin DBR9 came out! Your Tempest is coming along nicely. (I find the riveting on this kit to be a bit heavy for my taste though...)

About Airfix - I recently finished their 1/48 scale Lynx AH.7 and had quite the nice time in the process. It came together well, no major fit issues, details are good but I agree with you on the sloppiness of Airfix when it comes to ejector marks and seam lines. With a bit more clever engineering or just a bit more thought about those things and it would have been an even better and a lot less time consuming build. But that said, their kits don't feel nowhere near as rushed as e.g. Kitty Hawk's. I generally like Airfix, they improved massively when it comes to details and the overall quality of their kits and I like that as a British company they focus on British equipment other model brands don't have, like the AH.7 Lynx I mentioned or the three V-Bombers.

I have just finished my Airfix 1/24 Typhoon, it took about 6 months in between work and real life - I enjoyed having to work on this to get the fits to work, it makes it feel that you are putting your own skills into it. If everything all lines up and falls together you may as well bought a snap together kit. Great to see your techniques and ideas, like every modeller I am always learning new skills. All the best

I see what you're talking about, but at these prices,I ain't buying one! This supposed level of professionalism, I want one to go together, without fighting it,so I can concentrate on details. I use to love Lindbergh kits when I was a kid,but bought one ( truck and tanker trailer) a couple years ago,and almost every part had to be file fit and modified so the advertised features worked. Pissed me off so bad, after all that work, it turned out awful, and wound up chopping it up and useing pieces of the tank in another scratch build!

@@tomcline5631 I agree, with some kits you get to losing the will to live. I find this hobby fascinating - some subjects we'll go miles to get the correct this and the correct that, super detail this and super detail that, and other kits that look so appealing you just want to melt down for sprue goo!

I've got 2 of these beasts in my stash, no idea when i will get round to building them, but this is certainly giving me a nudge to get started. Never built 1/24 before so looking forward to it. Like most of us, I started out with Airfix as a kid, much, much later I returned to modelling about 15yrs ago, and was amazed the level of detail now included. started with some 1/72 and a very very old 1/32 spitfire kit, must have been about 20years old at that point, it was actually a seafire but I decided to build it as a Spit. I've built a lot of 1/48s and still have about 40 kits in the stash. Thanks for showing this and getting me set to start. Although i wont be going into all the detail here but its nice to see what can be done and some of the pitfalls.

I haven’t built a 1/24 Airfix kit since I was 12.(I’m 60 later this year), but I have fond, not, memories of attempting to put the Harriers fuselage together whilst juggling the Pegasus’s nozzles, and having gaps to deal with. But I did love the finished product. I have the 1/24 Hurricane in my stash and plan to build it soon, going in with the understanding there will be some work put into it. I’ve just finished the 1/72 BII Lancaster and it tested me at times, but again, the finished product looks fine. I don’t shy away from Airfix. But I usually go into an Airfix kit with my sleeves rolled up, knowing it’s not Tamiya gold star unit. But what’s the point of buying all the tools we buy if we don’t need them? And I think we owe our childhoods to Airfix kits. So I’m happy to keep building them.

I was thinking of getting one of the big kits - but seeing this, I would stay with 1/32 for example Special Hobby Tempest, or maybe something from Trumpeter. I am surprised that even it is new kit, Airfix took some shortcuts and solutions, you will expect in the old kits.

There are some definite challenges to this kit that require a lot of extra work. But I've heard a lot of horror stories about their older 1/24 stuff. This is not a scale I have built in before and I am learning that 1/24 gives you no room for error.

Some, but not all, of the later Airfix kits are good. Some are not so good and you are left wondering; "where is the quality control"?. There are sometimes strange things wrong that should have been caught earlier, or have been and it's too costly to fix. I have been tempted to try a 24th scale from Airfix, but i do worry about it having the patience if it's a real dog in that scale! That all said, i have seen some awful issues with Revell, Italeri and others so they are not alone. I look at Airfix and Revell as good bang for buck, just need work and mostly accept what i need to do. I will try the 24th one day, until then I'll stay with 32nd from other people for large scale. You have had your work cut out to beat this into submission. Well done. Love it!!

It’s good to get an honest picture of Airfix kits. I have the a Sea Fury and a Gloster Meteor in 1/48 from Airfix in the stash - I just really liked those subjects. I’m a very casual builder but I can usually produce something decent - helps if the kit is Tamiya or Eduard though I guess!! Made a nice TA-152 from the 1/48 Dragon kit. Intrigued by the way you’ve tackled this 1/24 Typhoon - you really are on a high level but you break it down so well for everyone’s benefit. Excellent work. You are taking some flack over your Airfix comments. Personally, I have a love / let down relation towards their kits. On the one hand they produce kits of aircraft that I am very much wanting to build ( who else has released a MkII Lancaster? ). I also think they respect the subjects. The flip side there is a lack of quality control. They put sprues in the box that simply are not properly shot and the problem does not seem to get fixed. Never the less over the last 3 years I have bought many Airfix kits, mostly 1/72 and the very Tiffy you are building now. I like them, but do not expect them to be as nice as a Tamiya or Eduard kit. Here in Canada I pay much less for a similar scale kit from Airfix, than I do for those other two. Overall Airfix is better than they were. Big improvement with the decals and the amount of detail in the kit. On a side note I do not understand comments about how others approach the hobby. If a person wants only a perfect kit out of the box and do not want to have any issues with assembly there is nothing wrong with that. Me I just want to finish the kit and will cut corners to do so. I really get intimidated if I have to modify a part to do the different variants in the kit, so avoid doing that. ( I can not cut a straight line. )

I'm going to take flak for sure :) As for my comments they are my opinion and the die hard fans are going to fight tooth and nail to prove me wrong. Airfix is as embedded in the British as Hockey is here. Expect blow back! Like I said though, their newest kits are good for what they are but I'm not expecting shake and bake. I have a few kits of theirs in the stash still and they do choose some interesting subjects. Where Eduard plays it safe with a Mustang, 190 or Spit, Airfix is willing to do the Sea Fury or Blen. There are days though as a Heavy Diesel tech, I've been fighting to put shit together at work and when I come home to a kit to relax, it can stall a build when that is a lot of work too. I'm not lazy, I just like a quality build but if I'm spending twice as much time with clean up, it can be very off putting.

If anyone ever offers you a Vintage Fighter kit, PUNCH THEM. Nothing fits properly, everything is warped, way too many pieces are 1/32nd scale. The pit does NOT have a landing gear actuator, not even the handle. No I do not like Airfix, but compared to Vintage, Airfix is Tamiya, well, at least Revell/ Germany. Kinetic is a joke, typical management half wits at the helm, the only thing they know about modeling they got from a Victoria's secretion catalog. Probably once worked at Boeing. Airfix is one of the Great Companies. This is why we have this 1/24 Typhoon etc. Tamiya 1/48 kits like the 1/48 scale P-51 and Spitfire MK 5 are somewhat mediocre in detail. Worst of all, individual prop blades that will invariably be out of alignment, that in scale on the real plane, would vibrate the engine and prop right off it's mounts. Give me a precision one piece propeller on a a plane model any day!

It's such a shame the direction Airfix have taken.Look at the 1/24 Hellcat for example.. a beautifully detailed model of a beautiful aircraft. It's design is great and I'm sure if the plastic wasn't so soft, the parts weren't warped and they took the time to correct errors from the test shots,(engine core for example), it would be a class A kit. I'm not a fan of shake and bake kits, but Airfix quality is just too hit and miss. I have three late tool 1/72 Lanc kits, they all have stringing in the clear parts. Customer services told me "it's part of the moulding process". Oh..OK then???

I think you answer your own criticisms about Airfix - they go after a particular market so you cannot complain if they produce a cheap model that needs work doing on it. The 1:24 scale are not cheap of course, but the detail is stunning, and to get utter perfection in such a thing would require ten times more development time leading to much higher prices. It is fashionable to knock Airfix - especially in the UK, but we would really miss them if they went under. I do sometimes thing that people who worry so much need to get away from their benches a bit more.... I think your comment about the wing skin thickness being out of scale is just unthinkingly silly. How can you have a wing skin which in reality would have been just a couple of millimetres thick, be 24 times thinner??! Such a model would be so fragile it would be unbuildable. It is good to put something of yourself in to a model - and you clearly do!!

I started over 50 years ago making Airfix 1/72 tanks and they went together great and also did the small aircraft but after some time the kits got hit and miss until just as Monogram / Revell I just stayed away from them and stuck to Japanese products. Which is a shame because a lot of skilled draft work had gone into these models let down by poor QC which is a problem of poor management. Maybe they think all their customers are under 12 with no clue and parents with little time and too much money. Under 12s desevere better .

Airfix? Ever tried to build a Matchbox kit? Airfix gives us a cheap option as the trend for manufacturers has been to increase the parts count (even in 1/144 to the point of ridiculousness) as well as the price of kits. Especially in Canada we get hosed with the low Loonie and stagnant wages aren't helping either.

I think Airfix should just stop making models. Maybe continue producing some valuable successfull kits, but stop corrupting modelers with some unique models that appear to be a great disappointment, like their latest Spitfire XIV or Electric Lightning, a jet that has sandy surfaces out of box. It's time to stop.

Just what are you doing to one of the RAFs most iconic ground attack fighters? Absolute sacrelege! You should watch some footage of this plane in action! It saved your yank butts a few times by taking out tigers and panthers which where ripping your Sherman tin cans to bits!!!!
