1/24 Scale Axial SCX24 | Steering Mod - Remove Slop From Steering

As I was working on the SCX24, I noticed a lot of slop from the steering linkages, the tie rod as well as the steering link. So today, I am going to focus on removing the slop from the steering links. It's a short video, but hope you find the info useful.

To get better steering with the stock servo, take the spring out of the servo saver and replace with a piece of fuel tubing. Makes the servo saver stiffer yet still protects it.

Since I have upgraded the servo to Emax, I am no longer using the servo saver, but this is great information for those who are using the stock servo. Thanks!

Best way I found to reduce all the steering slop was using the smallest white plastic washers that came in my traxxas ultra shock rebuild kits part # 2362. 2 of those smallest washers in each of the 4 points with the steering linkage for a total of 8. Tighten down each nut and then back off a 1/2 to a full turn. Check for binding and loosen or tighten according. Voila. And in that same rebuild kit there is blue gasket o-rings. Used 2 of those per shock as preload spacers. Had lots of those kicking around so it was a free mode for my steering linkage and my shock ride height.

Usually the shock parts cost a bit, so I just used the o-rings from a kit that I bought from Harbor Freight. The whole kit was like $5 dollar. It is holding up well even after several months. But good to know that the washers will also work. Probably going to be more durable than the o-rings. Thanks for the info.

@@BigSungHobbies probably more prone to binding and stressing linkage and servo. The tiny little plastic washers in those rebuild kits, which are under $4 are quite slippery, so hard to bind up as apposed to the rubber. Just my experience. Keep up the good work

Neat! But, I wonder if this makes the steering "slower" because of added friction? Did you oil/grease the O-rings prior to install? Awesome info, that I may apply to my little RC!

That's a great point! I will have to check on it. My assumption is that removing the slop should increase reaction time, but it might end up putting added burden on the steering servo. I will keep an eye on it.

PRay's Corner, follow up on your comment. The screw is made up of 2 parts, a pivot ball and then a thread. The pivot ball is taller than the thickness of the steering link. The slop is on the pivot ball, so the o-ring helps to tighten that up, but due to the way the screw is designed, you can't put too much force to basically lock it down (or at least you shouldn't with small screw onto a plastic). I did not notice any slowness. Actually it feels crispier. Make sure to check yours carefully before making changes to your RC.

Harbor Freight has an o-ring kit that ranges from A005 (smallest size) to much bigger. Pretty reasonable in price as well.

I put a APS racing black Aluminium steering arm on but now it Won't turn left only right

I haven't heard of that brand. I noticed that even on HR aluminum steering arm they use o-rings, so I figured, I would try this setup first. It's been working quite well for me, so I don't plan to upgrade to aluminum steering arm at this point.

Interesting. Did you use A006 size o-rings? You don't want it too tight with plastics and tiny screws. Maybe try loosening it a bit. On mine, I still notice a bit of movement, and steering is not affected by it. But good to know that it doesn't always work. Thanks for your feedback.

Best thing I done was hot racing steering link, got rid of all the slop, no binding, works perfect

@@johngray8798 Yeah, I think the stock servo is just not strong enough. It works well with emax servo.

@@andyrichey1192 Yeah, I think the HR aluminum steering link works really well. I went with o-ring mods since it wasn't available at that time. Surprisingly the mod with o-rings are working so well, I have not felt the need to pick up the HR aluminum steering links. If you look at the HR aluminum steering links very carefully they also use o-rings to remove the slop.
