Elsa VAG states: -bans the use of an impact wrench to unscrew/tighten the crankshaft bolt -silicone can only be applied on the plastic housing of the seal , applying the seal to the oil pan may cause the excess to fall into the oil and clog the oil channel leading to engine seizure -fixing the seal bolts, first tighten the bolts to the engine block and second tighten the bolts to the oil pan

1: I almost stripped the teeth off the bolt for the timing belt pulley on the crankshaft, in the end I just fabricated a large stainless steel plate, screwed between the timing pulley and alternator belt pulley so I could undo the offending bolt, and it came loose beautifully that way. 2: If one chooses to smear on half a gallon of sealant, you're right, carefull and with moderation does the trick well enough. The seal in my car has never been replaced (320.000 Km) so I thought it to be a good idea to replace. The old seal was short on sealant, causing a minor , but clear leak around the oil pan (for good measure, and due to the mileage I also replaced the water pump, timing belt+ tensioners+, alternator belt+tensioner, rear oil seal (requiring that special tool) , and also the flywheel, clutch plate, +pressure plate, + pressure bearing + rear brakepads+ discs+ brackets(including the brake cylinders) because I'm too cheap to hire a pro ... :)

Thank you very much for this video. It is very clear as is the timing belt video for this EA288 engine. Question: How critical would you say the crank seal needs replacing on minor leak? Mine was discovered to have some oil leak around crank shaft seal at independent vag specialist today. They did cam belt just 10k miles ago and didn’t mention this was prone to failure. Today they did interim service where it was spotted. Ideally, I’d like to avoid doing it until next 10k service but fear it won’t last. If it does need doing sooner rather than later then I’ll do it myself now (with help of your videos).
@diydaly2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked them 👍 it’s it’s just a minor leak from the. Sides or base it’s not really a problem leaving it till your next service , it’s it’s leaking around the centre and onto the belt then you really ort to look into doing it sooner
