I really appreciate you going over the base ISO / noise / dynamic range issues. I have a C70 and I always thought you want to shoot at the base ISO of 800 for best noise and dynamic range. I've seen KZbinrs claim you get "blooming" in your highlights, even properly exposed, if you shoot at lower ISOs - I appreciate the mythbusting. I'm not rushing out to buy a C80, but I will rent one and see if the detail and low light performance is significant when they've been out for awhile. I'm just concluding my own 9-month ownership review of the C70 and I honestly like it, but don't love it. It has met my expectations on many levels but honestly not exceed them.

In a sea of hype, you’re always a real one. For someone who held pat on buying a c70, the 80 is really enticing as is the 400. Then again, I’m sure I could get one refurbished 70 on the low end. But the ff is generally important as is AF

I stuck with the 400, specifically because I’ve felt myself growing out of the 70 over the course of the last year. For me this was both a physical issue where some jobs just simply call for a bigger body with more attachments, and a technical issue when working with Sony shooters in uncontrolled lighting environments or mixed cam setups where the 70’s natural softer look stood out until going through post. The jumps canon made in the 400 and 80 feel like a natural progression curve for the kind of commercial work I do and love. I Also shoot narrative, work on features, a few docs, industrials, and music videos.

Nice review. I'm a little confused on the base ISO part. Are you suggesting you need to expose similarly to Sony's Cine EI system? It really would have been helpful if you did shoot in the non-raw codecs to get a feel for the noise levels because RAW is always going to be noisier... Anyway, thanks for the review...

Using a single lens for wide and long is the reason I originally picked the R5C over the C70, I figured: I can get two lenses in one if I crop in to S35. Most people saying 6k/8k is overrated overlook this major advantage especially for run and gun shooting.
@lucasvivante898827 күн бұрын
There is crop in the image and it is often overlooked, but a 4k image is way way more sharp on 8k camera than in a 4k, because the pixels are true groups of 4 and can probably bybass a debayerisation i suspect. I mean if you are into sharpness, i don't realy care myself Having 6k or 8k is realy nice with some speciality shots when you need to zoom in the picture like a budget dolly zoom done in post

I think it goes hand in hand with lens and lens mount choices. For anyone who has started invested in RF mount glass , like the new 24-105, as their collection grows their need for native full frame RF mount options will rise steadily. But if that's not you, and my too, it's really a small upgrade if you want some stronger autofocus performance or better low light options. But it's really for that RF mount lens owner who wants to use Canon's new lens options, as they add to the Z line, and sees the c400 and c80 generation as the way forward. As a c300 mark III and C70 owner, i'm excited for the future when I decide to go all RF mount, etc etc. But definitely not this year.

Thank you for a measured and utility based appraisal of new tech, quite a rare thing on KZbin! Like you, I don't feel I have a genuine reason to upgrade my C70. My workflow wouldn't change at all other than not using an HDMI to SDI converter I use once a year for a live stream I keep getting hired for. Not a big deal. It's so easy to think that new tech is going to change things, but my life shooting hasn't changed since I had a C100 (apart from the bigger hard drives).

The c80 opens the 'major lenses' being the 24-105 2.8 and the 28-80/2 .. but most importatn I 'feel' (and I dont want to as I own a ton of EF) that the RF glass is just a little more sticky on the AF. The reason to get the 400 or 80 is surely to access those lenses. I guess you have the 24-105+boostes on the C70.. that 24-105 is both super useful and a bit horrid! As a 200 owner Ive been awaiting affordable used C500.. but honesly im feeling that the 400 would be better to get into RF glass (which I also use on my stills cam)

Hi Eric, about the RF 24-105 F2.8 with C80 one-lens combo, would a EF 24-105 F4 with speedbooster for the C70 also result in a one-lens combo with almost similar results? Or am I missing something?
@SoundItOutFilmsАй бұрын

The 24-105 F4 in conjunction with speed booster, in my opinion - is an absolutely awesome lens on the C-70. I have had no hugely noticeable issues with autofocus & stabilization seems to work very well. I have not done a direct comparison - but tremendous bang for the buck and has given new life to this woefully underrated lens.

Not totally similar results: the EF 24-105 F4 on the C70 (with speedbooster) will give a F4 depth of field FF 'look' (at F4), while the EF 24-105 F2.8 on the C80 will bring you a F2.8 depth of field FF 'look' (at F2.8). In other words, you cannot get the F2.8 depth of field FF 'look' by using the EF 24-105 F4 on the C70, you are limited to F4 depth of field.

Please, please, can you explain more about what you asked about the use of ISO 1600 and base ISO of 32? Thnaks
@alexmainwaringАй бұрын
He’s saying that the Base ISO has more to do with maximizing dynamic range than lowering noise. For instance, if I want to maximize dynamic range I would set Base ISO to 800 and then set my actual ISO to 800 (same idea for the other Base ISO options). Now if I wanted to lower noise at the cost of losing a small amount of dynamic range, I may set Base ISO to 800 but then set the actual ISO to something lower than 800 for a cleaner image. Another example: I’m in low light conditions and need to bump ISO up but don’t want to risk having too much noise in image. I will set Base ISO to 3200 but then set my actual ISO to 1600 to clean up the noise. Dynamic range isn’t as important in low light scenarios anyway. Also note that this is even more important to do when shooting in raw as the image will be much noisier than XF-AVC which has noise reduction baked in. Hope that helps and isn’t too confusing.

7:00 I - just like you - occasionally shoot documentary run and gun stuff but I always want to deliver incredible footage, even when there is not much time avaliable, which is why I am strongly interested in the 24-105mm F2.8, since it sounds like THE perfect run and gun lens. I just watched a couple reviews and especially photographers complain about not only strong distortion but also heavy vignietting at the 24mm setting even calling it completely unusable. This is at 3:2 full frame of course, but you do video - does this issue also apply to the 16:9 crop on the C80s full frame sensor? I can live with some chromatic abberation for documentries but having to start at 28mm defeats the purpose of getting a lens that should start at 24mm, which is a big difference. I also see some Chromatic abberation on the edges of this video of yours - which lens are you recording with?

Did Canon however bring the update, where you could disable the corrections? And if not, are these corrections also applied to RAW footage? I was also looking at the Blazar Remus anamorphic lenses.
