That dark line running down the center of that section is what arborists call 'included bark. Bradford pears are notorious for having included bark. What that means, in terms of structure, is that two spars of the tree push up against each other but don't fuse because of the bark in the middle. It creates a place where the tree is incredibly weak. You will frequently see trees fail at places where there is included bark. If you see included bark in the future it is probably best to pass on that piece of wood. It will likely do the same exact thing.

Thanks for showing this Larry, I wasn't as lucky as you and had my upper jaw broken. The impact moved the bone complete with 3 teeth towards the center of my mouth. Two steel plates, 4 screws and a heap of bracing wire for 6 months because I couldn't get back into hospital due to Covid. I now tend to do all my turning at 500 RPM. Stay well and stay safe.

This is no surprise with Bradford pear, our neighborhood was once lined with maybe 1000 of them. For the first 20 years or so they were spectacular when they bloomed. Then they reached a certain size and the weak crotches gave out every time it snowed, or the wind blew, or you just looked at them the wrong way. Lots of cars damaged by falling limbs (including ours). There are maybe a couple hundred left, mostly shadows of their former glory as they are missing lots of limbs. Many are hollow from water seeping into those crotches, and some even have trees growing from them. Also a major invasive weed tree here in Maryland. I did once turn a bowl from one that was cut down in my front yard. It had little or no character and warped badly as it dried.

Wow, that would have made me wanting to change my pants after that explosion. Phil said in one of his videos that your video was worth watching. He wasn’t wrong, glad you were not hurt. You’re a lucky man. In December 2021 I had a piece of birch 6x8 fly back from the table saw as I was cutting it to put on my lathe, a ambulance ride and 14 stitches later above my left eye , I came back home. It took me a couple weeks to get back in the workshop lol. With a nasty scar I’m back at the table saw and my lathe again. 😊. Todd from Newfoundland Canada

Almost all unusual shapes start out WAYYY out of balance. That was the center I wanted. The cause was that the crack was deeper and more unstable than I thought and I placed the tail stock into the crack with too much pressure. Thanks for watching, Larry

2 words... HOLY CRAP! I'm a newb, and watched a lot of Robo Hippy's video's when I started. I try to always turn from the side. I'm only on a 12x16 jet, so my wood is not as massive as that crotch, but I still usually turn only around 600 rpm and turn from the sides.

You got very close to chain sawing the electrical Panel. Putting the centre in a crack that travels 3/4 of the way through the piece is effectively driving a splitting wedge in to make firewood And move under tomb stone. You need some expert training.

I had a blowup about 3 months ago. I think it is still orbiting with the ISS and has not come down yet. When I turn now, I wear a heavy leather apron for a little protection and a crash helmet. Holly Molly, that was definitely a bad blow up with a huge chunk of wood. Suggest turning something smaller or something in better balance or check for rot. My stones are not big enough to try something that large to turn. Maybe some CA glue, 5 minute expoxy, bondo, or pure metal will put it back together! Agree, time for a beer, or some Jack Daniels.

I had an incident a week or so,ago now. Had a poplar cookie on the lathe and I messed up the centering pretty badly. Well, thought it could handle 800 rpm and well no. It literally vanished an landed in a bucket 18 feet behind me. It went t over me, bounced off the ceiling and landed in the bucket. I still haven’t touched it.
