It’s Lisa Bilyeu with another episode of Women of Impact and this one is SOOO important and SOOO close to my heart because we are talking about something HALF of the population will face and yet NONE are getting the support they need so they suffer alone & with no support - and that’s menopause.
Here to help demystify menopause for us is the amazing, brilliant Dr. Mary Claire Haver - an OB/GYN, author, and absolute EXPERT when it comes to all things menopause.
And she is here to call out all the super common misconceptions about menopause, including the hidden symptoms of perimenopause that are misdiagnosed or ignored by doctors, unexplored areas of research, and NEW findings that are shedding light on this vastly understudied area of medicine.
We go DEEP through the LONG list of symptoms women experience, HEAD TO TOE, that are dismissed as “aging” but are often linked to your changing hormones levels from menopause.
We also talk about the links between chronic stress, early menopause, and chronic disease, and soooo many other LIFE-CHANGING insights and strategies about women, menopause, and how we differ from men!
Dr. Mary Claire goes DEEP into the best things you can actually do - from your diet, exercise, sleep, and even stress - to prep your body for menopause and ALLLLL the changes you will go through in the process.
It doesn’t have to be the worst time of your life, guys!! There IS something you can do about your menopause symptoms, and you don’t need to feel ignored and suffer in silence any longer!!
So please homie, PLEASE know that you’re not alone!!!
As women we have to stop being ashamed about menopause and just OWN that this is part of our journey, there IS something we can do about it, and we DON’T need to suffer in silence any longer!!

Before I found Dr. Haver online ( 1 year ago) I thought I was going nuts. I had pain, without exercise, dry eye, weight gain, without diet change, frozen shoulder, although I swim regularly. Nobody really talked about these things. All I associated with menopause were hot flashes. Knowing that my symptoms are part of menopause, a natural part of a woman’s life cycle, has brought peace. Changing my diet, taking Vitamin D, Fish oil and Magnesium had helped. I swim for strength training and eat a healthy diet. Cutting out sugar and alcohol made the biggest difference. The hot flashes are gone. I sleep well at night. My hips no longer hurt. Thank you for discussing these issues publicly. Knowing that one isn’t alone with these problems and learning what to do has been very helpful.

It is very angering when you go to any kind of doctor, be it your child doctor, or any kind, and you tell the symptomps, you clearly see the signs of the disease, and the doctor try to minimize it or tries to explaining away it, because they doesn't care and they doesn't have the energy to deal with it.

I have had the worst 7 years of my life during menopause. Im 54 now. Like all these ladies I have put on 2.5st when I have always been a size 8/10 (uk) and am now heading to size 14. Nothing in my diet and exercise has changed. I have been su*cid*l, been dissociating, have been self harming and my life has been hell. No-one will help even when I have self harmed and attempted su*ci*e. I have been fighting for help, made numerous complaints to different organizations and still got nowhere. I havent been able to work, keep myself and my home clean to even a basic standard, haven't been able to leave my house. At one time I was bringing up 4 kids as a single parent and working fulltime and managed to get my degree. I had a fairly successful career before all this happened. I'm only just starting to come out of it now after 7 hellish years but I am coming out of it, thank god. I'm still nowhere near how I used to be but at least I can get dressed most days, can shower a couple of times a week and can get out of the house sometimes. No-one has even tried to find out what is wrong with me. Being totally honest no-one has even cared if I died not even people who are supposed to be being paid to support people. What are they getting paid for?

@sherrymurphy855 even in the UK where healthcare is meant to be free the only help I have got is when I have gone private. And then when you get private care the NHS either refuses to accept anything that comes from a private provider or refuses to treat you because you are already paying. It's an absolute joke (and not in a good way). I feel for anyone trying to get help because even if you get a good GP much of the system is broken. Sadly it is regional as well. When I lived in England it was challenging to get referred but once you were things would happen. I've moved to Scotland and, in my current area, you hit a brick wall with every part of the system. It's horrendous

This information is so eye opening. I lived 20 years of low energy, depression, weight gain, heavy periods, etc. (perimenopause). Nobody could help me. My naturopath (there was also a doctor in the practice in case I needed a referral) started with bloodwork to establish a baseline. He asked how I was sleeping, what I was craving and the health of my relationships. He took some of the darkness away. Now that I am in menopause, I have my life back. I have other issues, but life is still better than the hell before. Looking back, I was experiencing chronic stress which probably triggered the symptoms.

Medical gaslighting is out of control here in the US. Not just around menopause but for so many conditions that are both difficult to diagnose and treat. It is absolutely critical be your own advocate and if something a doctor said doesn't sit right, trust your gut. My best friend took over 7 years and $500K to find out that her vascular subtype EDS was causing her life-threatening issues. Can't tell you how many doctor's chalked her symptoms up to being in her head. This story jeeps repeating itself, much like that broken record of the "American Dream". To quote Carlin, they call it that because you have to be asleep to believe it. Wake up!!

I have been having musculoskeletal issues and my doctor told me I am just getting older and I exercise TOO much! I work as a researcher at a cancer center and everyone I have I talked to is convinced HRT still increases the risks of breast cancer and they are telling me just deal with the issues (hot flashes, joint pain, lack of focus, forgetting words, etc).

I was told hrt was safe for most people and me until I was about 62 and then I should try to wean off of it. ( I was told this by two of my most trusted obgyn.. I was told hrt is a lot of protection for my heart and brain.( I went off it at 62…I’m 66 now.. no ill effects..yet..

I am so glad she mentioned the proteins so often! It’s soooo important! All those vegans out there will crash and collaps the healthsystems everywhere in 20-30 years… I feel so much better since I started eating more meat, eggs and fish and lesser grains and modernised vegetables. I prever the good old vegetables much more like onions, carrots, sellery, pumpkin, beans, peas and cabbage. I can literally feel the difference in my body! Of course sometimes I eat broccoli, red peppers and other fancy veggies. But most days I avoid those and some days I do paleo. And lots of fresh/frozen/dried herbs and spices! Never never never save money on herbs and spices!!! I am 47 and my cycle runs still like a clockwork.

I was on a low dose hrt til 62, I hardly had any bad symptoms. If I drank any alcohol or got very stressed, I’d have horrible heat flashes….that was all. My life long obgyn, whom I trusted 100%, said that since breast cancer ( cystic breasts) didn’t run in my family, it was safe for me to be n this.. when I was about 62, my next obgyn told me I must get off all hormones as they caused breast cancer.. I did and since have had very dry skin and my hair has thinned more. I still want to know what the truth is.. does estrogen etc cause breast cancer?

I have a family friend that works in a cancer center and she’s saying she’s seeing more cancers in people that are on hrt. I’m at a loss. I’m 42 and definitely in peri and miserable. Miserable two weeks before my period. I can’t get off the couch and take on my responsibilities. I’m afraid of going on hormones but if thatll fix my problems then I guess that’s what I’ll have to do.

Hormones therapy should last for how long? And what will happen when one stops with hormone therapy? Do all the complaints start again ? And what does hormone therapy do on the long term? Any side effects? Hormone therapy, is it comparable with the anti conception pill? Bc with anti conception pill one looses sense of being yourself, emotionally, mentally plus other side effects. After all these are synthetic pils, synthetic hormones and on a longvterm could give serious illnesses maybe?

The contraceptive pill is chemical whereas modern HRT is 100% bodyidentical... that's why you can take it for the rest of your life. Just like you would not stop treating hormone defficient thyroid gland, you replace what is missing on a low level with modern hormones! The benefits drastically outweigh the cons! 💪👍

“ Menowashing “ sadly true. I feel menopause is getting more and more attention for finanacial profits. Everyone be aware, I know how desperate we can feel going through that stage but let ‘s not be fooled. I truly hope hrt is a rather safe option and not something that in 20 years from now we are not going to be told it was a very bad idea. As so many for the past years I have become very skeptical of pharmaceuticals. At the same time I do not want tio be narrow minded and not use potential wonderful tools we may have today.
