I get some messages that go something like "I want to improve my life, but I don't have the motivation to do anything. Not even something like drinking more water."
I get a surprising amount of these messages.
Yes, sometimes this is because something is awry in our diet, sleep, lifestyle, etc.
However, sometimes we're just lacking discipline.
We can't always rely on motivation. We don't wait for inspiration to brush our teeth. We just do it.
SOME discipline is required to do almost anything in life.
Going to failure seems to be good at building discipline. Pushing yourself beyond the point of "ugh I want to give up" seems to help.
I give a simple exercise here that's been used by martial artists for millennia to build strength and discipline.
It doesn't HAVE to be this. You can apply the failure/discipline principle to any exercise. But this one works well because it's relatively safe and training our legs can really suck.
In this case, that's a good thing.
Let me know if this helps!

Does discipline really exist or is it an external observation of someone who is “motivated”? What’s the difference between discipline and will power? Is someone who goes to the gym 7x a week ‘disciplined’, or are they using will power to go 7x a week? Think about it. Someone who goes every single day for several months isn’t using willpower to go to the gym every single day. Willpower or discipline will burn you out. Someone who goes to the gym every single day for several months does it because it feels *easy* for them to do so. Now imagine someone on the opposite side of the spectrum. Someone who dreads starting a work out, or feels too tired or feels like they don’t have enough time or feels too depressed or low. There could be so many reasons why someone doesn’t want to or can’t do a work out. Getting to the root of why something doesn’t feel easy is the real way to build a long lasting motivation. Otherwise, you’re pushing yourself to do something you don’t want to do without even knowing why you feel like you can’t seem to do it. Find out why you don’t want to do it and if the things you want to do align with your values or goals.

One of the most helpful things I've heard on learning disipline is to aim low, but always make sure you are aiming up. I started improving my life 4 years ago by flossing every night before bed when I brush my teeth. I'm now to the point where my house is always pretty clean, I keep on top of maintenance, and I've lost 30 pounds. I credit that small, yet positive change to achieving all of this

I first want to say that I, obviously, don't know anything about you and that you should take every I say with a grain of salt. I just wanted to say that should take a close look at if what you're calling a lack of of discipline is really a lack of discipline. If you struggle a lot with doing things even tho you really want to it could be something else, like executive disfunction. Again I know nothing about you, but people have told me I lack discipline too, but it turned out to be ADHD. IF it is something else, trying to force yourself to be more disciplined will get you nothing, except maybe a burnout and a lot of stress.

I think these types of discipline building tools are really key. My "motivation" has increased a lot since I got into the habit of making myself go to the gym on days I really didn't want to, with the mindset that even ten minutes would be better than nothing. I often find that once I'm there I get excited about exercising, but even if I only do that ten minute walk on the treadmill or mobility routine, I still reminded myself that I *can* get to working out even if I don't want to. It's not a magic fix, but pushing through my unwillingness is a great tool to have in my back pocket when I'm not as excited about making healthy choices in my life.

Thanks for all you do, and I hope you continue to produce great content. :) (FYI i'm 16 and went from 250 lbs at 6 feet to 205 currently.)

The way I learned self discipline was through self flaggelation. If I indulged in an impulse like having a soda or eating a cookie when I wasn't suppose to I'd give myself two lashes with a belt. If I failed an exam I would give myself five lashes. I eventually got use to the pain so I got a studded belt that left larger whelps. This only took a few months before I started resisting my impulses in practically every domain. I quit smoking, lost 90lb and still going, eat better, accomplish all my chores and daily tasks without the need for motivation.

The Hard part about discipline is the sacrifices you make. Working out takes time, and you can't play videogames as much if you spend a lot of time in the gym. Things like that, where you make larger, fundamental changes. That is what takes discipline.

Yes! Calisthenics is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical exercise. I love that you're finally breaking into the exploration of the mental side of fitness. Here are a few things I have experienced, that fall into the same category of 'the mental side of fitness': 1. Putting limits on yourself. Often when I'm practicing a movement, counting reps works counter-productively for me. As I realize I'm getting to the number I set out to achieve, I get complacent and this causes my muscles to 'hypertrophy' faster; I end up doing less reps than I could have, had I not put limits on myself. The mindset should not be one of 'reaching' a certain number of reps, it should be one of seeing how much your body is able to do. 2. Going hard on yourself. I have found that the 'go hard or go home'/'no pain no gain' mindsets are counter-productive. Our bodies are a product of nature. And in nature, nothing is ever forced; things are merely guided in the right direction - whether that be at the cellular level or at the ecological level. Keeping that mindset while working out does wonders. You are guiding your muscles to form the right movement habits. You are not forcing things upon your muscles. 3. Actively developing your mind-muscle connection. Removing all mental distractions before starting a set, so that you are completely focused on your form/the recruitment of the right muscles is very important. A trick I use is to meditate before starting a set. I don't begin until I've been able to execute ~5 breaths without any stray thoughts.

Hm you know, this might actually work for people like me when we're in our lows. Since we know we're depressed and can't push too much, it's good to have that chair. It also, of course, trains discipline. But I feel like it would help build character and better mood by simply feeling supported by something even if it's just a chair. Thanks Hampton!

1. This is super helpful, discipline is definitely something I struggle with 2. I have that _exact same stepstool_

Actually think I'll try this, going through a health problem which has caused weight loss and muscle wastage so the gym is still impossible but I could cope with this and take it to failure! Thank you!

My parents did something similar to discipline me, only instead of a one minute squat, they just beat me up 😃
