I was challenging myself to do 3 sets of 40 pushups with 30 seconds rest in between. I can do 2 sets cleanly and the 3rd is a struggle after 20 reps. Fatigue at 30. I have found I can do... 1 set of 25 advanced 10 pushups, 3 narrow 2 sets of 5 staggered each arm Sliding I found too difficult to maintain a consistent pace or good form. Also went back to regular and my lower back sagged at the start even though my arms felt fine, so I called it a day for pushups.

On the plow knee tuck I could get my thighs close to my chest BUT I found that I was able to find the flexibility after I did some warm ups we did at BJJ. Once I could back roll over my shoulder my body found the strength to do them.... It is like my body saying nope we cannot do this and I had to remind it with various progressive moves that YES it actually could.

Yeah same. Both ours did that. We always had a woman for girls PE and a man for boys PE and they were separate classes most of the time. Our teacher made girls do knee pushups. And when we did have joined class, the boys teacher would always shame those boys who couldn't do "boys push-ups" and told them to group up with girls for the "girls push-ups".
@mr.ambientsounds1291
@mr.ambientsounds1291 Жыл бұрын
It was the same for me. Some teachers were OK but others just assumed that girls couldn't do anything more than the knee push ups. They were properly shocked when I could do not only full push ups but also handstand pushups and one arm push ups. I was super into calisthenics at the time.

For some people, 100 push-ups a day might work for your body. Everyone’s body is different I would highly suggest reading the article by by Jeremy Ethier - July 30, 2022- what happens to your body when you do 100 push-ups a day, Wilce this might work for some people the article points out a lot of positives about giving your body rest periods and what happens when you don’t have rest and recovery.

As a large person, the stigma of exercise and largeness has always made even beginning fitness very daunting. Your straight forward, factual and compassionate sharing of how to look after your entire body, pay attention to your limits and how to prevent damage are so useful and really answer so many questions I’ve always had all my life, but no one to ask. It’s crazy that deconstructing the stigma of starting at whatever you’re capable of into it being actually a healthy, proactive and progressive action to train your body’s muscular strength, flexibility and joint strength - really is the magic ticket. Body health and fitness shouldn’t begin and end at body image, ego and competitiveness. Fitness and body work like this feels achievable, TRULY accessible for all bodies and feels entirely coded towards the health of your entire body. I’m so grateful you make this content

I wanted to say that the original "You CAN do pushups" video was what got me into fitness in the first place. I wasn't doing incredibly well in my life due to my own self-image among other things, but that video as well as the original routine have, safe to say, changed my life. I now no longer dislike how I look or how I act towards myself and the basis for this can almost solely be attributed to you, Hampton! The new routine looks incredibly well built, and while recently I haven't had enough time to fully check it out, the effort that was put into it is obvious, and I can't wait to see how it evolves

But we can do this, just stay patient! 💪🏻 Edit: already got TWO yesterday after 10 days! I feel like I unlocked a whole new world 😂 Editedit: y'all are too kind! Really made me smile to read all the comments :) the situation right now is that I can't really get over 3-4 push ups, so I will continue including more incline pushups for a while. I’ve been doing it for over a year now, and tbh I was recovering from an illness that had me bedridden for over a month and almost took my ability to walk. Now I am able to do advanced incline push-ups, I can do the side staggered squats, and I am working on the horizontal pull-ups, I have gained so much strength back and it’s just from repeatedly trying to increase with small steps every day! If Hampton hadn’t taken the time to outline the steps, I doubt I would be able to do 5 push-ups right now let alone multiple sets in the 20’s

You're so respectful and understanding of the fact that not everyone can do the standard pushup. It's like you pick up where most fitness KZbinrs just don't. I've been struggling to do a pushup for a long time but the other week I found the key. I bought a pullup bar to put in a doorway a while back. It's very stable, especially with the little knobs that sit between the bar and the doorway, but those are screwed in. However, I realized I could squeeze the bar in the doorway further down to do my incline pushups against. (Of course I first check that it can hold my whole body weight) it's worked great and I'm improving, finally! Best thing is I can just move it down a couple of inches to slowly progress!

After watching the original video I started trying pushups. I could just about do wall pushups, so I started there. That was 15th March this year. By 2nd May I could do a set of 10 standard pushups, by progressing through wall, desk, then knee pushups. My chest and shoulders are visibly and physically stronger. You’ve helped me out immensely Hampton, cheers!

@chrispeacock1257
@chrispeacock1257 2 жыл бұрын
@@felineloveyaa I do a 2 day split, without a designated rest day because I really struggle to keep habits unless I do something daily. On day 1, I do pushup variations and some dumbbell curls (I do dumbbells because I have them around and can’t find a way to do pull-up variations yet). 3 sets of each. Each set to failure, with a break between each to do the other exercise i.e. push-ups/curls/push-ups/curls/push-ups/curls. I’ve recently started doing 3 sets of standard push-ups before doing 3 sets of knee pushups, in the same session. Once I’ve done that I like to do as many wall pushups as I can until failure. This isn’t very many tbh after standard and knee pushups. On day 2, I do sit-ups, side sit-ups, half bridges and squats. I started with leg raises instead of sit-ups, as Hampton advises, but I found my back/leg muscles are too tight and I ended up working my back rather than my abs. I find my sit-up form considerably better. I also do side sit-ups for those muscles either side of the abs. I don’t have a mat, so I lie lengthways on a spare pillow when doing floor exercises. I started the half bridges at the first variation before moving up to half bridges. I tend to leave the squats till last because they kill me. I like to go all out with them, trying to go until I can barely stand and want to cry. That’s about 100 consecutive for me atm. I use my desk as support and it helps me get though the last 40%. I tend to dare myself to do the last 10 support free, because at this point I’m masochistic. The buzz of succeeding at something I really didn’t want to do beforehand is a high I’ve developed an appetite for. Other than the squats, I do 3 sets of each exercise to failure. Each exercise between the next the same as day 1. I only do one set to failure on squats because they’re awful. I keep a page on my notes app of every exercise/reps/sets I’ve done each day, including when I’ve had ad hoc rest days. It helps me to look back at last time and see how many reps I should be aiming to improve upon or match today. It’s also nice to look back and see the progress made. I’m still a massive noob but I’ve never been in better shape. I look forward to progressing further.

it's okay to be skinny at first, just work your way up gradually towards regular push-ups, and start adding more reps gradually (until you add an additional set). When you finally master them, you can start learning "planch" exercise, it's more advanced than push-ups and will give you more muscle volume.

Thank you for the tip about the wrists. It’s hard to even start doing push-ups when that 90 degree angle is so painful. It’s encouraging to hear that starting from an upright position (on a wall)….slowly, carefully, with perfect form might build the wrists enough to start putting weight on them.

Stretching the forearms helps. Much of that wrist pain comes from the muscles in the forearms. Hampton has a great video on stretching that helped me with elbow pain. Elbow pain comes from the forearms too. lol

My experience is that it gets better, in 2018 I was focusing on getting stronger and increasing my cardio endurance. My wrists killed at first, but over the span of a few months I was able to hold my body through planks, burpees, and push-ups with lessening pain. I'm nowhere near as strong as I was 4 years ago, like not even close, but funnily enough my wrists are still pretty sturdy for holding my body weight. Take it slow, make sure you warm up your wrists before any workouts, and stretch when you're done.

Your recoomendations on knee pushups were really helpful to me. I'm overweight, out of shape and a cripple, I can't do a full push-up not just because I'm weak, but because I can't put a lot of pressure on the front of my feet due to past trauma. Where I'm from I've never heard of knee pushups at all, and I've been so happy to discover that variation. I can currently do 3 sets of 15 with a decent form, my goal is about 3 sets of 35, then I'm gonna look for something to elevate my feet, so that the pressure is on the lower part of shin and not on the toes.

Before I got injured, I used to grab 25 pound weights and lay them on top of my back while laying on my stomach. So then I was 50 pounds heavier. Then I would do my push-ups. I got the playful nickname iron fingers, because despite the 50 pound increase, I always found it natural to do the push-ups on my finger. Usually my thumb index and middle finger and not my ring or pinky because I never felt comfortable letting them touch the ground. But now due to my injured shoulder after getting hit by the car, I am like a little baby doing push-ups against the wall , but boy, it is better to do push-up standing up against the wall, then not being able to do anything at all. Because for the first six months of physical therapy, I couldn’t even lean against the wall.

Ive been lifting for about 8 months now and for calisthenics specifically, you have been so helpful. Just a few months ago, I couldn’t do one pull-up and now I can do ten. When I started I couldn’t do one pushup with good form now I can do twenty or more with perfect form! And I was using all of your tips so thank you.

Commenting to track my progress: Day 1: 3 sets of 10 knee pushups. Day 2: 3 sets of 11 knee pushups. Had to take a break for some time, hurt myself (unrelated to this) and then got Covid. Will update when I resume. Tried to push myself, didn't realize how strong I was. Did 12 real pushups. Going to track my progress increasing those numbers now: Day 3: 2 sets of 12 pushups.

I struggled to do push ups then found the GOLDEN SOLUTION ---- learn to hold the 'Plank' excercise for about 1 minute or so first. The 'Plank' is much easier and helps to strengthen the muscles that was holding me back, push ups is a full-body exercise so stregthening the core/legs/torso by holding the Plank before going onto push ups worked for me. It didn't take long before I could hold the Plank for a minute, then when I tried push ups it felt so much more comfortable to do. I also now do crunches aswell for my core and squats to strengthen legs as these too help with the muscles needed for push ups.

2 months ago I couldn’t even do 30 Real Pushups. I used to do 30-40 Knee pushups everyday. I gradually increased them. After 3 weeks I started doing Real pushups. I used to do 30 Pushups everyday. And Again, I gradually increased them. Now I can do more than 150 Pushups in 30-35 mins

I love the message and especially the tone. A lot of people have a bad relationship with pushups and are too scared to even get started! Thanks for the encouraging words

I signed up for a push up challenge in July - having never been able to do a full pushup in my life. Following the advice in this video, I started with wall - then moved on to using my stairs to gradually get lower. Then I found out I could actually do kneeling pushups. I've been riding that high for about 2 weeks and today I was able to do 50 without needing a break. :) Since I reached 50 I figured I'd give doing a full pushup another try. I CAN DO THREE!!!! They're kinda shallow, and kinda difficult, but I can do them without just flopping on the floor halfway! ^__^ I'm on day 21 of my challenge and I'm so happy with my progress. Thank you for the amazing advice!

That is great news. I’m happy for you & the progress you have made. Remember to keep good form. It’s better to do 3 good forms than 10 bad ones. Good luck to you Liz! 🙂

My hint: spread your legs a little when doing full push-ups. That makes it just that little bit easier, and once you reach 10-15 that way, you can start to clean up your form without losing a lot of reps.

Thank you, appreciate your vids. Also, I call your Advanced Incline Push-up a deep incline push-up. It's all good, as long as you are doing them. Cheers.

Guys! I could only do one pushup before! But I slowly worked my incline down from my bed until I could do the classic pushup. Now I can do ten after 3ish months of training!
