$1 Shoe Repair on the Streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰

While walking through the streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka I noticed two men sitting on the street with what looked like materials to mend shoes. As I had a slight tear in my North Face hiking shoes, it looked like a quick, cheap and convenient place to get it fixed.
Sri Lanka is full of these type of micro entrepreneurs working on the street. You can have someone hack open a coconut for you, repair a rip in your shirt, clean your shoes for you, without really having to look for them. That is something that you don't see in developed countries and is an interesting part of Sri Lankan culture to me.
Bonus content. At the end of the video, while walking around Pettah I unexpectedly ran into the scammer from my Tsunami Temple Scam video.

The uprising middle class and technology are dramatically invading the professions like street-side shoe magicians or cobblers, who shouldn't be endangered with the societal empowerment. 200 is way too much in my experience. In India the usual rate is a maximum of 50 rs, which is around 123 rs in sri lankan rupees. Of course you can pay more, if you like, especially since it's so cheap. But just because it's cheap doesn't mean they're good people. I noticed the hostile and hateful look from the beginning. When they overcharge they always get this hostile look and I think you shouldn't miss that if you want to stay safe in the future. It's like they're justifying to themselves that it's ok to overcharge a foreigner but somehow they make it obvious instead of hiding it. From the comments it seems like everyone else missed it too, but I can't let this go because I've experienced it a lot. It's there in his voice and body language so much and how the other shoe guy barely answers your questions. And there's the usual passive-aggressive, fake, "Where are you from?" question followed by nothing else.

Sri Lankan's per-se are not scammers, however there maybe a couple of uneducated people who scam random people to earn a couple of extra bucks in their day. We strongly suggest to always use either a trusted guide or Destination Management Company to organize a tour for you so you do not have to be concerned about any such scams, fraud or other related issues.
