Andy from Tewsley Auto Wreckers donated his grandfather's tow truck that started the junk yard back in 1950. So we're turning our patina C10 into a vintage tow truck with a 6.6 Duramax LB7.

There is actually 60-66 vehicle that can fit that frame in the same body style as the 64 you are putting on it. Back in the 60s, in Sun Valley Idaho the local Ski Lodges had some custom 60-66 buses made up that were stretched versions of the Suburban. There were 5 or 6 rows of seats behind the driver. These Suburbans still exist, there are several that are in the Boise/Mountain Home area. Every once in a while they go up for sale.

Don't weld the chassis together. Just bolt it together. Then, if you need to hoist the motor out, unbolt the rear chassis, wheel it around to the front of the truck, and voila! Hoist the motor out.

This is an awesome build! My vote is that you build that Duramax right from the start. Put bigger injectors and a good lift pump on her . Also, you might want to consider an aftermarket oil pan from PPE or the 'Banana Pan" while you have it out of the truck. The factory one( due to its design) has an issue with trapping a bunch of the old oil when you drain it. Love the channel !

The stock engine will supply plenty of reliable power on a good tune. Concentrate resources on a clean build of the rest of the truck. If you clean it up, that boom might be stronger than you think. You could mount it on rails to extend its reach out the back for heavy loads further out. If it would slide all the way back, it could place heavy loads into the middle of the truck. From the middle of the bed it could easily support a car.

I'd like to have the potential failure points in the Duramax addressed such as the head gaskets and injectors. I think a mild and ideally inexpensive twin turbo build would be cool. You know, don't spend $50k on a built engine, Banks everything, etc. Build it how somebody on a budget would. Don't spend money on stuff you don't need. I see too many channels and shows these days just throwing brand new everything from the catalog into builds. And that's not how most of us would do it even if we had the cash. lol. Make everything you can and only buy what you need but can't make yourself. I think that fits the spirit of the build.

I would keep the engine low-key stocker, but build up the hydraulics on the boom; maybe even add a jankey looking knuckle ( like something Grand-dad would build) so the boom tucks up behind the cab. No Boom-truck is complete w/o 'outriggers' either. All business. Also, no barney-looking stacks...a discreet 5" dump underneath on the exhaust.
