0:48 Parathyroid hormone and calcium
3:18 The Coimbra protocol
3:35 Vitamin D resistance
6:05 How to prevent high calcium levels in the blood
In this video, we’re going to talk about the critical roles of vitamin D and parathyroid hormone in helping to prevent autoimmune diseases. Many people with an autoimmune disease have had success with the Coimbra protocol, which involves taking high doses of vitamin D.
The Coimbra protocol checks parathyroid hormone levels produced by the parathyroid gland, which is intimately involved in calcium regulation. If you have low calcium, the parathyroid gland pulls calcium from your bones and distributes it into the blood. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium by a factor of 20x!
Vitamin D resistance occurs when the body does not absorb vitamin D. You can have normal vitamin D levels in the blood yet still be deficient in vitamin D. Parathyroid hormone levels can tell you if that's happening.
If you are not getting enough vitamin D, you will have trouble with calcium absorption. The parathyroid gland will have to overcompensate to combat vitamin D resistance.
Usually, if you have high vitamin D, you’ll have low parathyroid hormone levels. Low vitamin D and high parathyroid hormone levels can signify vitamin D resistance.
If you have vitamin D resistance, the solution is to take more vitamin D! The Coimbra protocol involves adjusting vitamin D until the parathyroid hormone lowers to a low to normal level.
Vitamin D resistance is typically caused by a problem with vitamin D receptors or a genetic issue known as polymorphism.
Other barriers to vitamin D absorption include:
• Low sun exposure
• Darker skin complexions
• Old age
• High stress
• Location
• Air pollution
Pathogens have strategic methods of downgrading vitamin D receptors. Pathogens from tick bites can downgrade your receptors by a factor of 60x!
Cancer cells, especially those affecting the colon and bones, downgrade vitamin D receptors to survive. Heavy metals can also downgrade vitamin D receptors.
Magnesium and zinc can protect against high calcium levels in the blood, but your best defense is vitamin K2.

Another point I want to make about the Coimbra protocol, which I disagree with. He recommends not taking K2. This is because he has found when you take K2, the calcium can rise in the blood. True, but K2 drives calcium into the bones - and where does it have to go first.....blood. If you continue to test people over time taking k2, the blood calcium decreases.

Just to give you some idea doc, I saw on youtube reputable research that said 1 hour in full sun = 20,000 IUs vita D. I used to do laps in a pool for an hour 5 days a week for 25 years in Australia where its hot. This is equivalent to 100,000 IUs vita D a week. But developed arterial sclerosis after menopause. Now at age 60 I take vita K2-M4 & M7, problem solved within months of taking it. When I am not swimming I take 50,000 IUs 3 times a week and K2 every day. It is healing gut issues and slowly loosing weight. I have also stopped eating oils and returned to tallow, butter, Ghee and unhomogenised milk (1cup a day with coffee), on carnivore Keto diet, recovering wonderfully. Praise the Lord, who directs my research.

I had high calcium in my blood and the resident at the hospital where I went in to the ER thinking that I was having heart issues told me I needed to look into it. I went online and started researching it and found the Norman Parathyroid Clinic in Tampa FL. Long story short, I went to their facility and found that I had developed a parathyroid tumor, and they did a minor surgery, and I now take K2 and Vitamin D together daily and all of my labs are back within the low normal range on my labs. I had not been feeling well ( lots of stress at work ) and death of parent and so grateful the resident pointed me in the right direction!

My blood tests show very low IGM and high IGA but the doctors here in the uk keep saying they don't know why. I paid privately to see an immunologist and she didn't even know😢😢 . I have very severe sjogrens level dry eyes, that's the part i am desperate to fix. Opticians confirm it's clinically bad yet the rheumatologists i've seen are no help. It's so hard to get right tests like the parathyroid here in the uk. Medicine here is a disaster

My daughter has MS and has been in the Coimbra Protocol for 4 years, monitored by a Coimbra trained doctor here in Seattle. We feel blessed to find this protocol vs DMD biologics. There are co-factors, multiple supplements, involved, too. Very low calcium diet. She's on 100k a day and parathyroid finally is down and she has been in remission. However, she has had mini relapses due to EBV reactivation so that is also a factor in MS. Her protocol doctor put her on antivirals and she is back in remission. She also has/had Crohn's and a bowel resection which was before MS. She's been in remission of Crohn's also since starting the protocol. I would emphasize that people must be with a Coimbra trained doctor as doing the protocol on your own can be dangerous. Thank you so much for acknowledging the Coimbra Protocol!

Great info! Far too many people are unaware of the importance of proper parathyroid function. So many, in fact, that there is basically a place close to where I lived in Atlanta, GA that does parathyroid tumor removals every day, all day long, on an outpatient basis. I was one such patient. My doctor kept saying my calcium was normal at 11.2 and Vitamin D was low at 8. So she gave me a Vitamin D prescription, and my calcium continued to climb, so I stopped the D and went straight to an endocrinologist/surgeon. I asked that he do blood tests himself, and he suggested expensive imaging tests instead. I told him to please do the imaging depending on the bloodwork. Results were the same: Dangerously low Vitamin D to safeguard the body against dangerously high calcium. Apparently, the human body is well-aware of what too much calcium can do and treats excess like a poison by eliminating vitamin D. He said, "And here it is," pointing to a spot on the computer image. "This won't look like much of anything to you, but you have a good-sized parathyroid tumor." Rogue parathyroid glands strip calcium from the bone all day long. They go haywire after a very long period of Vitamin D deficiency (working in a cubicle), straining and stressing themselves to provide the blood with enough calcium, until at some point, they get stuck in a switched-on position. The surgeon told me the only option, at that point, is surgery. They don't shrink back down after a decade of growth like mine had. The procedure is very simple, and chances of a second tumor occurring are less than 10%.

Dr. Berg, great info, thank you. However, with all due respect, I hope you can explain something. I get a red flag going up when you say that there is a resistance to vitamin D so you have to take more; that is what Drs have thought about insulin right? If you are resistant you have to now take insulin, but you have taught us so masterfully that it is not the insulin that needs to go up, but the sugar that needs to go down. Can you please explain a little more why it is not detrimental to take MORE of the vitamin D even though we are resistant. I suppose you said it will make the parathyroid hormone come down, but how does it do that?

Kinda disappointed you didn't mention the different types of K2 in this video. Some say that the mk-4 type is taken as 45 mg, in 3 x 15 mg increments and we only need 600 micrograms of mk-7 form of k2. (This 45mg amount comes from a treatment of Osteoperosis in Japan). So would we need the milligram amounts of k2 mk-7 since it is a more bioavailable form? Anyway some further clarification would be very beneficial.

Been here, done that. 10 years undiagnosed shoulder problems under my primary. I ended up at the point of basically begging to see a rheumatologist mostly for someone else's opinion. So I get there, and she refuses to do any treatments until I am supplemented with vitamin D as I was so low. The shoulder problem then melted away and even remain absent when I stopped taking the vitamin D. So back to my primary, and he says it was all just a placebo. 😵‍💫

Even the rheumatologist contradicted herself about the vitamin D. She said she hadn't heard of anything like that before and to just stop drinking milk, so then a few moments later I mention the vitamin K and she perks up, yeah yeah and acknowledged it's benefits 🤨😒

I just asked my rheumatologist if there were any natural ways I could use to at least help my RA and he straight up said no. Which I knew was false. This is the kind of thing he should be telling me. I at least expected him to recommend Omega 3 or something! My vitamin D is almost always low when my doctor checks it's too. I had a Dr. years ago actually give me Rx strength vitamin D that I took once per week and that was the only time my levels were normal. My flare ups were minimal at that time as well.

Your rheumatologist should also have told you, you can reduce your exposition to air pollution, indoor and outdoor when possible. Often the cause of flare ups, isn't due to what you are doing, but what you are breathing while you are doing it. Housework is a very good example, this often causes flare ups, because of the chemical products being used. They fill the air with endocrine disrupting chemicals, which disrupt your endocrine system.
