I've found those rubber tipped things that look like brushes, but are for shaping clay, are good for applying the masking fluid since it's really easy to clean up after!

Something I learnt about masking fluid (I had left mine long enough for it to become too thick to use) is that you can revive it by adding a small amount of water to the bottle and shake it until it becomes the proper colour and consistency again. Not sure if you were already aware of this, but it's a useful tip for anyone who's having problems applying it.

I don’t think you _actually_ dislike purple. Let me explain, whenever you say you _don’t_ like a purple it’s _usually_ more of a _magenta_ (Purple + Pink) instead of plain purple. But when you say you _do_ like a purple, it’s _usually plain purple, legitimate, plain, unchanged, just regular purple._ So, in a way, you’re kind of like me, even though _purple_ is my _favorite color,_ I _hate magenta._

Not sure if you've done this before but i like to use salt with watercolour to make starry backgrounds. If you sprinkle on salt (as in sea salt or table salt etc) to watercolour as it's still wet and then dry it completely with a hairdryer the salt picks up the watercolour and all you have to do is scrape the salt off to (hopefully) reveal a scattering of little dots or stars. Took me a few tries so may not work the first time but i love using that method for backgrounds. Ive tried masking fluid before but like you i think mine was very out of date 😂

The picture turned out great! I personally really like this colour of purple, but I totally see where you're coming from with the "toxic" purple colours. A few suggestions I've read with masking fluid is to not use old fluid and to let the fluid dry overnight before painting then let the painting dry overnight before removing the fluid.

when you're laying down shadows, how do you not rewet the pigment and get weird lifting texture? I've been watercoloring for a while now and I get so afraid to put down shadows bc I think it ruins my piece when I put them on, I just hate the texture of it. yours always look so smooth

I have some ideas why the masking fluid tears at the paper. You already said that it's old, that could be it. Or maybe it was cheap? I have Schmincke masking fluid, been using it for ages and it still works perfectly. And thirdly, I think you put it on so thickly, I think it's supposed to be used lightly? To me it looks like you applied the masking fluid rather thickly, from my experience it is best to do one medium leaning on the thin side coat of even coverage, though with how you said it was initially rather thick and yellow I suspect your suspicions are correct. For future reference, I’ve used Dr. Ph. Martens masking fluid with much success and it only tears in places I’ve applied it thickly.

gosh i wish i had some good watercolors! i love using them but as of right now i only have some cheep ones i got from walmart just to test it out. definitely need to get myself some higher quality ones asap.

I've been told by some artist friends that you should store masking fluid upside down because the reason it gets thicker is it's starting to set in the bottle, which sadly happened to mine a few years ago. Wonder if it's be fun to compare the white left behind by gel pens Vs like posca pens, acrylic markers and masking fluid.
