Good video & info. I have a GivEnergy 3.6kW Hybrid Inverter, 9.5kWh Gen 2 Battery & SSE facing 10 x 415watt all black Perlite panel array on the back of our house, a Zappi EV charger & an Eddi which was all installed in March 2023. Our 1st EV (used model) also arrived in June '23 but we are still on a gas CH system. Still not sure about a HP - mainly for aesthetics, cost & upheaval reasons - we have 10mm microbore pipework. Our solar / GE Inverter & battery system has performed very well. I could do with a higher output from the 3.6kW inverter to cover the high usage periods but, as you said, you do learn to manage & stagger appliance usage to get around this. We have also replaced our old condenser clothes dryer with a heat pump dryer which uses a fraction of the energy the old one did. After 9 months of summer / winter use we have saved around £1,300 on our previous utility costs & this includes the cost of topping up of a 64kW car battery to 80% every other night on Octopus Intelligent Go. Those savings don't include the additional savings in petrol on my wife's old car (now an EV) & my existing petrol car which is not used as much as before. We have also not needed to use a public car charging station yet. All EV car charging has been done at home overnight at 7p/kWh or, for free from solar during the summer. If we need to go further than the 260 mile range of the EV then we use my petrol estate car. Having analysed our electricity usage over the last 9 months I have decided to add an extra 5 x 420watt Perlite panels (which are now half the price we originally paid) to the front of our house roof (NNW facing). The extra 5 panels will catch the mid afternoon & evening solar that we currently miss out on & I'm also adding an extra 9.5kWh Gen 2 battery. This will take our battery storage up to 19kWhr which will give us more options for export earning sessions & easily cover our daytime usage. We are retired so we are at home most days so to go "grid free" during the daytime & to run on battery only is a big benefit to us. The additional items should be installed next month (March '24) & I'm looking forward to seeing what additional savings they can add & what options I have for export earning sessions. The only snag is that after the extra battery is installed I will have run out of space in my single attached garage for any more kit which is probably a good thing because my pension pot has taken a bit of a hammering this last year.!!! Keep the vids coming - always a good watch.

Hi Colin - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. That sounds like a great set up and more solar is always a welcome addition to any system. For the moment I'm happy with my current 8.2 kWh battery being able to cover my peak consumption, if this changes I may need to look into this further. As you say though, funds are always going to be the limiting factor for most and it's very easy to become overly invested in one thing. I'm also not 100% sold on heat pumps yet but to be fair haven't looked at the numbers in great detail yet. It's something I do need to look into though as our current gas boiler is getting long in the tooth. If you’ve not already, please do like this video, stay tuned for some more content and thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion on this video 🙂

Thank you for the video. We had 19x395w panels, iq7+ microinverters, 8.2kwh GE batttery and Zappi installed in June 22 and it’s been great. Zero electric bills (including the car “fuel” for 7k miles per year) and still a few pounds left for the gas. Octopus Flux in the summer and intelligent go in the winter. My only regret is that there was space on the roof for two more panels, but I opted out as I thought it wouldn’t look “nice”.

Another well made video. Well done! Glad to hear you’re happy with the GivEnergy kit as I have all the bits to do similar at home with an existing FiT system over next few weeks. Although, thought there might have been a twist at the end where you unveiled more battery storage has now/will soon be installed to store more for home usage following removal of VAT on installs and with GivEnergy stockists recently highlighting a realignment of prices on kit for the better… another 8.2 kWhs would fit in nicely 😉

Thanks for the kind words ☺️ glad to hear it's been helpful. Haha, another 8.2 kWh would be good. Although I do want to avoid being overly invested in one thing. I've achieved my goal so far which was removing any peak rate electricity consumption. A 2nd hand 8.2 kWh at a good price , may well be appealing though 😉

Thanks for sharing your experience with your system. Very informative. I have 20 530w Jinko Bi-facial panels of which10 are installed as a roof for a car port and 10 as a protective roof over my shed. I have a Sol-Ark 15k hybrid inverter along with 4 5.12kw Pytes batteries. All installed in late October last year. I have already generated over 3Mw of power and used it all! I live in Costa Rica, so the sun is shining most of the time here, apart from the week after I installed the system, when it very unusually was similar to a UK autumnal day. I have just bought an electric hot water tank (a very unusual item here) so that we can stop using our electrical powered showers. I see this as being effectively another battery. On a normal day my batteries are at 100% by midday and then the inverter starts clipping the solar production to match the usage. Therefore I will setup the system to divert the excess power after midday to heat the tank and I'm sure that this will suffice. This will also have the important benefit of not asking the batteries to spike their production for the showers, hopefully helping to prolong their lives. I wondered if had considered this option as you already have a hot water tank? Maybe run it hotter and heat it at the times when you have excess solar. We have a terrible system here for grid sell, so the system is designed to be effectively Off-Grid and so far so good. I've had 3 monthly bills totalling less than £20. And I have since tweaked the system to hopefully reduce this further. I'm loving the journey and like yourself, I'm happy to be substantially reducing my carbon footprint, having made quite a large footprint when I was younger! Best wishes.

Hi Simon - Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds like a well thought out set up. We've a 300L hot water tank in the loft and prior to install had planned to heat it up as you say a bit like a battery. However, export rates over the summer were excellent and had rates were low so it made more sense to export this and heat just the HW we needed via gas. Like you I'm trying to make the system more efficient as I learn more about it and accumulate the data 👍🏽 If you’ve not already, please do like this video, stay tuned for some more content and thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion on this video 🙂

Been through a similar journey to you, 4kW FIT array in 2016 (due to pay off this year), GivEnergy inverters and batteries in 2023, gave up the FIT export in summer last year to get advantage of the Flux export rates. Our installer put in 2x GivEnergy hybrid inverters which means we get double the throughput rate but does mean the FIT generation doesn’t get stored, it’s either used in the house or exported. In hindsight I’m OK with the decision, would of course prefer to capture the FIT generation but the extra power output of two hybrid inverters and batteries makes for a more flexible system. We have an ASHP so in winter our consumption exceeds the battery capacity. More battery would be nice but financially it’s not worthwhile. We do drive our battery and inverter hard, using home automation to automatically charge and discharge at the best agile rates. This works really quite well although occasionally the inverter gets confused, won’t discharge, and has to be reset.

Hi Geoffrey - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Thanks for the insight. I'm glad we'll soon be paying off our 1st FIT benefitting array as the rest of the 20 year term will just be profit now 😃 It'll definitely be useful having the x2 batteries and inverters to help reduce grid consumption given you have an ASHP. Nice work on the home automation, something I definitely need to explore. Part of me is scared of the rabbit hole of time and money I might go down though!

Great video and information! It's a very complicated decision to make and very difficult to explain to less tech savvy people. Hard to believe that I am watching UK channels for solar and battery content! Downunder, weirdly enough, solar is not as helpful to the grid as it seems to be in the UK, with fèed in tariffs less then 5p per kWhr (and that is even a generous exchange). In Aus on time of day metering, I believe that you can pretty much get free power during solar peak and free power at solar minimum. So, I believe that it is then necessary to size your battery to carry you through the shoulder peak periods, am I missing something here?
@everythinghome

Hi Brett - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Yes, that's exactly it. We got enough battery capacity to cover our peak usage. Nice Video. I am looking at Solar and have been doing a lot of research, looking at costs, how much power I might generate and whether a Battery is worth it. I really like the GivEnergy kit especially the AIO which I do want to install. It is a real shame GivEnergy do not offer Non-Hybrid Inverters as one doesn't need these for the AIO so they would be an unnecessary expense. I will be looking at 3 strings, 1 East, 1 West and 1 South. I was initially looking at 2 Inverters with all the pain it would give me to parallel them but Growatt have just launched a 3 MPP Inverter which is powerful enough to power all 3 of my strings. So, looking like the AIO and Growatt Inverter. Panels are pretty cheap these days but the mounting systems have really gone up in price since the Pandemic. The only issues I have is needing to get Planning Permission for the Flat South Array as these will be on Ground Floor Roofs. The East/West Array will be on my Workshop pitched Roof.

Thanks for update. Any reason why you didn't go for Tigo optimisers on each panel which would help with shading performance? (And give you loads of panel data to analyse!) Regarding battery location, mine are in a separate badly insulated garage. After a first winter of slow charging in the cold, I enclosed them in a 2" thick polystyrene box! Problem solved.. and I do monitor battery internal temp! It's fine, even on a hot summer day.

Our first install was easy on a single storey garage. They didn't erect scaffolding and it's partly on a slope so easy access, but definitely did for the 2nd install in 2022 (different company). That's a good question. The fire alarms are mains linked but also individually have a 9V battery fitted which we change twice a year when the clocks change. Don’t think you say where your surge protector is? Between your house and the grid or on the DC side between panels and inverter? Why not a DC coupled battery? Did you not look into SolarEdge? Only would have needed one inverter.

Also, didn’t you consider the garage loft space for the battery?

Hi Richard - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. The surge protector is between the house and grid I believe. From what I understand I needed an AC coupled battery to preserve my FIT. I hadn't thought of the garage loft space as an option but it would have still meant digging a trench to upgrade the cabling and access to that areas isn't particularly good. It's also got a lot of stuff there already but that could have been moved.
