I have been with Octopus for a year now, they still cannot get me a functioning smart meter, therefore I cannot access any of their tariffs designed for Solar panels,batteries and EVs. Despite many complaints I am still not being paid for the energy I input to the grid. Absolutely disgraceful Customer Service.

I went from octopus Go Faster to EON Next Drive, while cheaper did not provide itemised billing, so you get a statement that says you used 200kwh peak and 400kWh off peak. When I discovered they were using estimated usage instead of the 30 minute reporting it became a challenge to get the bill correct. They were massively overcharging, I have the GlowMrkt Bright smart reader so I have exact meter real-time readings so after a few months managed to get them to refund the overcharging. It was cheaper but required several hours each month to get the billing accurate. I calculated it out about a £6 a month savings and the hours I was spending on getting billing right meant my time was worth £2 an hour. So went back to Intelligent Octopus, 6 hours at 7p per kWh was charging my 20kWh batteries and the extended hours when charging my car increased the hours on off peak by ~5 hours per day. EON was too much effort stress and time for a £6 a month saving.

With Octopus intelligent Go, rates for me now are 23.3p peak and 7p offpeak! Have just got the outgoing tariff at 15p so should pay for the annual standing charge. In my view unbeatable, if i were you i would change your charger to a zappi just to get the OIG, but also supetior for solar setups.. not sure if the ev type makes a difference.

Thanks for commenting on the video. As per the video, with E.On next drive I get 6.9p per kWh and 16.5p per kWh export and all without the need to get a compatible car/charger at considerable expense. I made the move from Octopus to EON recently. It took just 6 days to get switched onto the Drive V3 tarriff. I too have solar and batteries and have a 4 bed house so I stated the house was a 1/2 bed as I knew my bills would be low and therefore avoided the trap you fell into on overpaying in the early months. My DD is just £49 and I do not anticipate this increasing if consuming overnight charging for two EV's and battery top up on the off peak rate and then pushing SEG during the days.

While not really relevant to the main topic of video you might want to keep your thoughts open about gas tracker. The value of it has gone down and the July 2024 tariff is very close to standard rate. While it should stay cheaper than the cap over winter as expectation is priced in, any unexpected spike in gas prices could easily ruin your whole years savings. The risk vs reward just isn't there now with the equation getting worse with each update. So for now I have gone back to SVR for gas while I keep an eye out for deals or look for a new long term plan.
@everythinghome
@everythinghome 3 күн бұрын
Thanks - always sensible to keep an eye on it. I've noticed it ticking up of late but not sat down and crunched the numbers yet. Although, from a glance and over the years I've been on it it's always worked out cheaper. Worth having a look again sometime soon, thanks for the comment 👍

@@everythinghome Yes in the past it has saved me lots of money too. They didn't change the formula for quite a while but now seems to be changing it to be much more profitable for them and worse value for customers. Like today the rate in my region is 5.05p (July 2024 tariff) so only a tiny bit less than SVR (5.34p). If there was an unexpected spike in say Jan when you would be likely using much more gas all those tiny savings could be gone within a month's bill. One advantage tracker still has is locking the daily standing charge for 12 months. I guess as they say all good things come to an end. 😟
@everythinghome
@everythinghome 3 күн бұрын
@gavjlewis thanks. Yes, I've noticed the formula is less favourable. I'm still on December V1 2023 so it is better but the margin is closing. My tariff ends date is Feb 2025

I don’t have an EV so can’t get Octopus Go/IOG, but I do have solar, battery storage and an ASHP so can use any of their other smart tariffs (apart from Intelligent Octopus Flux as they don’t support multiple GivEnergy inverters). I was with Eon (and still am for my FIT payments), but moved to Octopus in summer 2023 for the decent Flux export rates. As you highlight Eon’s export rates have improved quite a bit recently but I think I’ll still stick to Octopus as I’ve been on Agile since last October and all through this summer. With Agile Import you can get the fixed outgoing 15p export tariff, very similar to Flux day-time export and Eon drive export (16.5p), but you benefit from a truly variable tariff, sometimes negative or just a few pence overnight. My annual consumption bill since I got my export tariff is -£11, an estimated saving of £3,500 against the SVR! Agile does need decent battery/inverter automation (e.g. Home Assistant, wonder watt) which can take you down the home automation route as well

Interesting video as I have just made the same move (or will switch in September). However, I didn't know about the referral code so have emailed E.On asking if they can apply this or whether I need to cancel and re-submit my application again. Hopefully, since my switch isn't for another 6 weeks, they'll play nice. I'll let you know what happens. It's also interesting your comments on Octopus Energy's customer service. I've always found their agents to be delightful to deal with. However, more often than not, they don't produce the goods or are extremely slow to do so. In my latest example, before requesting my switch to E.On, I spoke to Octopus about whether I could switch to their EV tariff even though I don't have an EV but I do have battery storage. I explained that I could do this with E.On. The agent was lovely, said she'd never been asked that before and would pass my question to their EV team for a response. Ten days passed and I heard nothing so I decided to request my switch regardless. Octopus are good...but in my experience, they're not quite as good as their radio adverts make them sound to be.

Hi - thanks for supporting the channel using the link. I've generally had no real issues with octopus customer service. They've generally been excellent for me. The reason for the move was purely based on the E.On next drive tariff and their export tariff yielding significantly more savings and the fixed nature of the tariff in comparison to octopus who have changed the tariffs in a short space of time and not as favourably as I expected. Thanks again, Shan

I'm currently (no pun intended) running at 99% off peak (car and house) and I see that continuing for most of the year. So the only variables for someone like me (battery EV solar) are off peak rate and standing charge (since not much diff between 15p and 16.5p export rates) since an extra few hours at night make no difference. I think I'm more of a usual example than you having a very slow charger and the length of the off peak being important. I can add 150 miles in 6 hours so almost never need more than that (in fact I can say never in 4 years) and you can use devices like washing machines in parallel with an ev charge. I know EV Nick has explained how to game intelligent octopus to get more than the 6 hours and I've occasionally got that but there's a limit to what you can do for more than 6 hours of cheap electric anyway most batteries will be full in 4 hours or so Would you have a different answer if you had a faster charger? I would find that a serious inconvenience as I'd be plugging in most nights

Hi Derek - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful. I suspect given you can access IOG your savings by switching to E.On won't be as attractive as mine. Furthermore, if you have a heat pump the cosy tariff may well be worth a look at for the winter. Nevertheless, I think it it useful to know what the competition are doing and run the numbers every so often to check you're getting the best deal. If you’ve not already, please do like this video, stay tuned for some more content and thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion on this video 🙂

Can I ask how will you deal with Saving Sessions. I'm on the Eon Next Drive V3 tarrif and have export with them also. I can't see how I can save energy unless the export is taken into account like last year. Octopus deducted the export from import and using forced export ensured a saving. I dont think Eon can make this calculation. Any ideas (I'm not a give energy customer)

Hi Joy - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. The saving sessions are a Octopus Energy led. However, the wider scheme is the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) - I haven't explored how this will work with E.On yet to be honest. But undoubtedly I will do. Eon next pay annually for solar, 16p per kWh when signed up. They said that part is old fashioned where they take a manual reading and photo for export. Import is like octopus using same software, bills are a little sparidic on eon next drive 3 normally monthly, but it is a great tariff, I was on octopus go, but now our bills are much cheaper. The saving sessions with eon next are deducted from the monthly bill.

I've swapped to eon for both import and export. My question is... will eon use my export figure against my import figure to calculate a usage saving during the dfs events. Like octopus do? @Pete-rf6zz

@@joymarie4443 they pay it annually or upon request, but I have not been with them for a year. I can ask them, but would imagine they pay by cheque or deduct from one of your accounts. Tell you what I might ask to pay mine now and see if they send a cheque.

I think loyalty is important. Octopus continue to offer the highest number of tariffs. I’m on agile with fixed agile for export. Made £30 this week on a modest set up. I don’t see anything in your video that would make me move to Eon. Tonight I’m discharging at 15p. I will then film the battery at below 0p.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Useful to know. I was in the same position and stayed with Octopus for 5 years. The savings won't be there for everyone or enough to make people switch and that was never the intention. Rather, it was to demonstrate that there are other options out there which is good and will hopefully mean prices stay competitive. I too am a long standing Octopus customer having been on nearly all of their tariffs, also from the Toon and I've had Evs since 2013. I've been on that FB E.On group since it started as I've just had my solar and batteries installed a few weeks ago. 16x Aiko 455w in two 8 DC arrays with the relatively new Sigenergy 6kW Inverter and 5+8kWh batteries. I also can't get the IOG tariff have no compatible car or home charge unit. I'm on Agile import and Outgoing fixed at 15p just accepted just 3 days ago on the 9th. Everything you mentioned about E.on was my concern also and decided that for now I like Octopus for its admin, app and monthly export account payments. I'm still going to keep looking at that ND tariff as it will definitely be better over the winter months at 6.9p import to charge the batteries and car. Liked and subscribed 👍🏻.

I've been watching some comments on line of people moving from Octopus and thinking just that. Octopus are a company that won't want to be left behind and I'd expect some interesting tariff tweaking in the next couple of months. Till then I better have another go at the spreadsheet although on IOG I think the benefits will be somewhat less for us.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Definitely agreed, and part of the reason I switched was their limited reduction in the off peak for Go in April. Plus, keeping one eye on Octobers prices a 12 month fix for both import and export is very welcome right now 👍🏽 If you’ve not already, please do like this video, stay tuned for some more content and thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion on this video 🙂

I moved to E.on next last week, so far so good. The only down side is the app not being very good, rates are per hour rather than 1/2 hour and the charts don't align very well. However it being a fixed tariff for import and export is rather good and the rates are nice 😊
