So sorry to hear this! So hard when we have a loss like that. I had a koi that was 22" when it passed. I got it when it was about 3" . Of course it was not a fancy koi as I could not afford that but it was pretty in my eyes. Hope you can learn what caused this if just to ease everyone 's mind.

Buying kois from Japan for 22 years and raising kois for 27 years in total, I’ve never once had an issue with shipment from Japan. In this case, we don’t know. But we can tell from the nose damage and fin damage, it came from the wholesaler’s location. If Ferrari was there for 2 months and had those visible signs, it must have happened there. The nose damage is from transportation front and back and not side to side as the fish moves and hit their heads. The fin damage was from bad quality of water (ulcer and fin rot) Another issue I saw was when he was introduced into aqua land… he was literally put into a tank filled with other fishes. You are risking the health of other fishes as well when you do that instead of quarantining AGAIN once they reach aqua land. No matter how much you trust your wholesaler. The ammonia spike put him in stress mode and that’s when health starts deteriorating. That’s a huge fish, he’s also at least 10 years old.

It’s real shame this fish wasn’t taken care if properly from the beginning. It could have been saved of it went to a proper quarantine tank as you’re supposed to do. You all tout to be the best and promote your lifestyle, but it is proven to kill fish time and time again with hobbyists and now a highly touted imported koi for aquascape itself. I totally get mistakes happen but you have to at least be professional about it and not do rookie moves by throwing it in a tank full of fish and have gravel everywhere. If anything, this video should be an educational video on what not to do. Everything you did was wrong. I fully understand everyone has different opinions, but facts can’t be argued or fluffed over so easily and that’s why so many comments are calling out aquascapes actions. I’m a small fry in the fish world and have a small KZbin following, but I would never make excuses like the ones made about this fish. I actually have a video I got at a recent koi show and thankfully put in in quarantine even though it looked super healthy. It developed wicked ulcers after about 9 days and still currently treating and it is quite robust overall. I crossed notes with another person who bought from the same supplier and she was experiencing the same! In quarantine!! Point being, everyone, quarantine your fish and don’t take advice from these folks. As nice as they may be and reputation seems good as far as people, their advice isn’t sound. If you ever need real advice on koi, I highly recommend you skim the pages online at Koi Organization International. That’s the number rated website in the world for koi health and they would recommend opposite of everything what happened in the video. The treatment and procedures performed to qt and save the fish are outdated, amateur and should never have been promoted to do so. Not trying to be rude, just keeping it real for viewers who may be less experienced.

1. The red streaks in the fins indicate septicemia (blood poisoning by bacteria). If a blood sample was taken within 24hrs of it dying it would most likely show this under a microscope or culture 2. Septicemia is what did that koi in, not the ‘ulcer’ . 3. Baytril was probably used which is one of the weaker medications that many bacteria have built up a slight or complete resistance to (I could be wrong on the medication used) 4. He never checked any of the internal organs (Gallbladder, intestines, kidneys, liver, etc.) all the video showed was him poking around the eggs.

I agree with your assessment of Baytril. Here in the UK it is over-used, a big part of the problem is many vets have little experience with fish diseases and frequently reach for a ready stand-by. Plus, given the situation where many fish store owners persuade vets to let them have a stock 'just in case', leads to over-use, and the proliferation of resistant strains of bacteria. I have frequently been called in after vet administered or owner administered treatment has failed to stop an infection, and the first thing I do is take blood and tissue samples and whizz them off to my lab asap. In the case of open ulcers on koi and other pond fish, the results frequently show a dense culture of Aeromonas hydrophila resistant to Baytril. If the fish is not beyond redemption, it usually responds to one of the antibiotics to which the bacterium is susceptible. $10,000 is a good reason to call in a fish disease specialist at the first sign of trouble: well worth the consultancy and lab fees IMO.

Nothing sits on a bare bottom the pumps keep waste suspended until the filter inlet picks it up. Thus the koi are not eating the waste theoretically. But I doubt any of that was the problem she died from stress and having a belly full of eggs and nowhere to lay them. Plus it looks like she smashed her nose into the side somehow and injured herself.
@benhkoi
@benhkoi 3 жыл бұрын
@@dantemazantini8953 When you build a pond it's a necessity to use bottom drains, otherwise down the line you'll be regretting you hadn't done it originally. Placing stones on the bottom prevents the waste from going into the drain rather it becomes traps trapped in the crevices. Eventually, it is going to become very hard to maintain adequate water quality and will increase the likelihood of your fish dying from ammonia poisoning.

I just lost a koi due to ulcer/bacterial infection - did everything I could... So feel really sorry for your loss too. One thing I'd mention is - not sure if you kept the injured koi in hospital or QT for treatment - as I notice the main pond has gravel on the bottom that tend to trap fish waste and in turn encourage bad bacteria / fungus which will continue to attack an injured/ulcerated fish whose immune system is compromised. You should never put a visibly sick fish Ferrari in the main tank on day one instead of a quarantine tank. Ferrari could have infected all the healthy koi fish in the main tank. Never buy a koi over 28 inches from Japan due to shipping stress.

Did you know how old it was? Is that even a thing? Wow, such a sad loss I know you would have made things as scientifically within optimum fish living parameters as possible so I’m sure it wasn’t anything you did ( or didn’t do ) but do you think you will ever be certain of what happened or it will just be the stress of double long distance movements and perhaps better handling in the shipping & handling?

If ponds were setup properly, you would never have to drain down to clean and the fact that’s it’s vey well known and the fish was still put in with other fish AND GRAVEL was absolutely wrong. By you stating the fact gravel has to be maintenance is proving gravel is a hotbed for the very bacteria which killed that fish. It should have been put in a qt system with proper filtration and the cleanest of water possible not gravel with other fish poop and waste being trapped in gravel. Your degree should say that or maybe you slept late that day of class.

@@CapeFearKoi lol we rebuild features like yours after a few years they were built because they are garbage. You can run your mouth saying the same stuff over and over but you have little to no knowledge about ponds. I'm glad to see there's a handful of idiots like you out there that agrees with you. The only sad part are the customers you actually do convince that your system works 😂

The fished died because it was egg bound, without spawning ropes or plants Koi will not release eggs, and obviously a couple of males.. The bacterial infection did not look bad enough to have killed the fish, so egg bound or she had something lodged in her stomach pouch.. The water looks very dirty, remove gravel,add 90lpm of air as a minimum,increase filtration and stop.adding salt to the pond, please tell us what your salt water meter reading is??

Salt is such an old outdated method, it only improves the slime coat by irritating the fish's body by triggering an immune response- causing more stress. Clean water with air is the easiest way to heal wounds and quarantine. I don't get it. You could just google this stuff. A decent antibiotic would have likely saved this fish.

I am AMAZED that this fish was put out into general population with obvious wounds!!! I'm only a home hobbyist but even I know that's a VERY bad idea! It should have gone into a seperate hospital tank so you can monitor it better, check what its eating , see the wounds closeup and not risk all the other fish. Whoever quarantined and shipped this fish was to blame for all this. I hope someone's ass was fired! I am flabbergasted that this all happened. EDIT TO ADD: I was mistaken that this fish was quarantined in country before this .

Fired? No way. They promote this behavior!! It’s like watching Crazy Town as they are supposed to be professional, creating healthy environments and hire professionals to evaluate the fish and it NEVER gets proper care. If this were someone’s dog, the internet would be flipping out.

This is Shawn at Koi Market. I want to be 100% clear that Koi Market had nothing to do with this fish. As a favor, we were asked to drive this fish to Chicago when we delivered our own fish to Aquascape. The box was delivered 5 minutes before we started our journey. We never even saw this fish until the box was opened at Aquascape. This fish came from another dealer, not Koi Market.

People saying they understand losing something that's close to your heart. Don't be gullible. This fish was not close to their hearts. It was close to their wallets. Clearly. They're certainly not shy to show that the loss, to them, was the $10,000 not the koi.

@@EdThePondProfessor then why is the title $10,000 koi and not just "prized" or "loved". Again. Not saying youre not sad. But titles like that and thumbnails like that give the impression that you might've had passion in your heart for the fish at some point, and I'm sure there's still some there, but your passion now is more so the money. It's not just you. It's all of you guys that have turned animals into, not just a HOBBY, but an actual profitable business. Similar to a puppy mill.
