@theinquisitor81126 жыл бұрын
The Covenant aren't invincible. Their shield gaps can be exploited when they are opened for their weapons, and concentrated MAC barrages can still shatter even carrier-level Covenant shields. After that, it's just a matter of pelting them with missiles, coilguns, and strike craft. Also, Earth had/has hundreds of ODPs, whose super MACs (technically called the Series 8 MAC) is equal to that of the UNSC Infinity's MAC armament. Those things tend to be feared even by the Covenant navy for their ability to gut a majority of the Covenant's ships in one or two shots.
@slate84096 жыл бұрын
Because they were unprepared and weren't expecting a fight. Regret's fleet was expecting to find an uninhabited world, or at the very least a small, relatively defenseless colony. Most Covenant were under the impression that Reach had been humanity's homeworld given the defenses present. More to the point, Regret's fleet was just his personal security detachment - when he left to follow up on his lead to the Ark he did so without informing any of the other Hierarchs or Covenant military. Realistically, what happened was Earth's defense fleet was nearly matched by an archeology expedition from the Covenant, an expedition which managed to penetrate their orbital defenses and lay siege to a major population center for hours on end. When they later showed up with an actual COMBAT force the UNSC was powerless to stop them and had to resort to asymmetrical warfare on the ground, performing hit and run raids from hidden fortifications like the one we saw at the start of Halo 3.

The people who wrote this segment of the halo lore forgot that a battlecruiser is a bigger class of warship than a heavy cruiser. they got them the wrong way round.
@hartsfang6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. That is generally how video games stack them up but a battlecruiser is generally a ship which is armed but not armored like a battleship in an attempt to out gun anything it can't out run and still out run anything it can't out gun rather than just your biggest cruiser. And cruiser is actually a role rather than a size, ships made for long range patrols or "cruising." Centuries of changing naval terminology can make ship classification pretty confusing and contradictory.
@amandafranks51086 жыл бұрын
that is also true, however Battlecruisers were almost always characterised as being larger than other cruisers and is lots of cases were similar sizes to battleships, with similar firepower as you said but with generally less armour protection.

The point about High Charity's reactors is slightly wrong. While it did have backup generators, they were not nearly as powerful as the Dreadnought, and couldn't sustain the space station on their own. High Charity could only carry out a slipspace jump in Halo 3 because the Gravemind altered it using ancient precursor engineering techniques, and even then, it collapsed as it exited slipspace at the Ark. Before that, it was just sitting close to Delta Halo, being quarantined by a fleet of Elite ships.

That is my reading - at the start of the conflict the Covenant have a huge advantage over the UNSC in terms of technology, resources, production capacity and standing military strength, but they employ that advantage very poorly, having a weaker grasp of tactics and strategy on balance than the UNSC officers and being severely hamstrung by the theocratic structure of their system of governance and broader society. This failure of leadership, more than any other single factor, is what allows the UNSC to first narrow the gap, and then largely level the playing field before ultimately winning the war.

The Halo Hunters in the Dark book may have an explaination for this. The Ark is in need of repairs and constructor drones (which in the book travelled through a reactivated slipsace portal on Earth because the AI in charge of the Ark was about to detonate the rings so Sangheili and Humans went to turn it off) well, the constructor drones would essentially gather any and all resources to repair the Ark and build new rings. Meaning High Charity may have been used in repairs.

@jesusmora93796 жыл бұрын
starfleet would NOT struggle against these aliens. they only have the equivalent of navigational shields/star wars shields, use plasma guns and got defeated by low tech humans. and they don't even use their technology at 100%. a single federation ship would decimate the entire covenant empire. the same is true of IOM, terran, and almost any faction of sci fi. halo is too overated at times.
@gregorygreenwood-nimmo49546 жыл бұрын
@@jesusmora9379 I think you might be overstating the case a bit there. The whole thing about lasers not being able to penetrate navigational shields is just one of the many, many things Star Trek gets wrong about basic science - a laser is by its nature a scaleable weapon. A laser weapon's power is limited only by the ability of the firing vessel to generate energy, its ability to manage the heat buildup, and its capacity to focus that energy. If a civilisation had total mastery of those three factors, you could theoretically build a Death Star type laser weapon quite capable of taking out a planet in a single shot. I think that the intention was for Star Trek navigational shields to be able to offer resistance to laser weapons, and immunity to low energy ones, but I somehow doubt that a Star Trek ship could just laugh off a full power shot from the Death Star. Indeed, I think their shields would provide only limited protection from any class of heavy ship to ship laser weapon. As observed in the Starfleet flaws video, most Starfleet ships have compromised designs not optimised as war fighting craft, and very limited internal shipboard security forces. Starfleet could certainly punch above its weight, with its ships being far more effective than their size and appearance might suggest, but they would always struggle against dedicated, fully militarised space navies that are organised and equipped accordingly. After all, they have such issues even within their own canon. As for single Star Trek ships defeating other entire settings... lets just say I think you might be letting your enthusiasm for Star Trek overwhelm your ability to look at the question objectively.

The Covenant has both in spades and the command centers for the ships of the line of the Empire are all exposed. Which makes them prime targets along with a lack of rear facing weapon positions means the covenant could abuse the hell out of micro jump and put holes in the SSD's from behind and disable the engines without much effort. While a flying wedge is an effective structure for space combat for maximizing forward firing arcs it has a major issue with the ass end is mainly engine exhausts.

@@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 star trek is super future sci fi. they have complete control over photons and can create photonic constructs in the holodeck, and have means of FTL comunications and teleportation via "subspace". the federation is not the most powerful faction in its universe, when they first went to deep space they had plasma weapons and super nukes, and both proved useless against the standard alien technology like phasers and shields. lasers are meant to be obsolete weapons in lore, same for plasma weapons and nukes. they use more advanced and powerful weapons like phasers and disruptors to be able to get past shields. as for power, a warp core houses a matter anti-matter reaction inside it, phasers have planet-busting power levels which was used to destroy planets. the power output of the warp core is THAT high, it can be used to warp space time, teleport people and objects and power phasers. they can keep it cool inside the ship, it is not that much of challenge to do it outside the ship. "As observed in the Starfleet flaws video, most Starfleet ships have compromised designs not optimised as war fighting craft, and very limited internal shipboard security forces." very few weapons can get past type 1 and 2 shields, and if they do have enough power to do so, the shape of the ship stops being important, as the destructive power is so high that it doesn't matter. the positioning of the bridge is irrelevant. "but they would always struggle against dedicated, fully militarised space navies that are organised and equipped accordingly. After all, they have such issues even within their own canon." pre warp and less advanced civilizations can't harm a ship such as enterprise, which is an exploration vessel. they have only had problems with aliens of similar technological level to their own. for much of TOS, klingons were not so much of a threat, as they were less technologically advanced. enterprise was able to completely disintegrate a klingon bird of prey during a battle. one of the reasons why earth did not have specialized war vessels. "As for single Star Trek ships defeating other entire settings... lets just say I think you might be letting your enthusiasm for Star Trek overwhelm your ability to look at the question objectively." star trek ships have destroyed entire planets and held entire civilizations without help. less advanced aliens have no way of getting past shields, their ships would get incinerated by phasers with high precision and they would have no way of even starving the ship or making it run out of ammo, as it can replicate food and pieces for repairs (the ship also self repairs and updates using replicators all over the ship, and can seal holes using force fields. not that they would ever need repairs, as no one will be able to get past shields). it can even replenish energy by diving inside nebulas, all without ever lowering shields. it's like a tank against ants, at least against the covenant. other fleets may be closer in tech, like IOM or protoss, but not star wars nor halo.

I don't know much of halo lore but isn't the fact that the covenant got to keep there home world's which most likely had forerunner tech on it a advantage since humans lost their true home world because of the war between humans,forerunners and the flood Which caused us to be relocated to earth and technology regressed? Which I think is a huge disadvantage for the UNSC

I like how 40K is full of hostile life and we use that to judge other entirely differences

advantages to the covenant navy well one the plasma based weapons on the covenant ships melt right through titanium a plates on UNSC ships but the downside to the plasma based weapons is the charge times i read in a halo book covenants were charging up the ships gun ready to fire they said something about plasma lines charging

Maybe your opening phrase could be something along the line of every like we get we will disintegrate an alien and plant a tree

I've always loved the CSO because it perfectly mirrors the culture of the Covenant itself: imitative, not innovative.

here is a few points you left out and i am not going to be overly bias for being a halo fanboy here 1 their numbers there have been a few times when the covenant navy lost 100s of ships but still managed to keep the fight going plus they need such large ships to deploy their numbers speaking of 2 their speedy deployment if 1 covenant ship lands they can deploy 100s of drop pods and 1000s of troops not to mention a number of tanks and air support needless to say they know how to go on a land grab 3 this one can fit in ether video but they know how to board ships before sending their heavy ships in they sent out boarding parties to blow up UNSC stations they managed to blow up 2 out 3 stations needed to allow the prophet of regret to pass through the third station stayed alive thanks to the MC plot armor

Yes, it is the basis of the halo universe

It's clear by this video that the humans only won because of plot armor and that human players wouldn't want human characters to be all exterminated

You'd think the UNSC would race to develop something more effective and refit their ships with it.

11:15 That’s actually false. The Flood destroyed High Charity not Master Chief.
@trinalgalaxy59436 жыл бұрын
The flood consumed HC, and them MC blew it up on the lesser ark. still enough survived that the ark's defenses built a containment wall around it. So technically, the flood crashed it, master chied destroyed most of it, but parts remained
