@@LordInter I don't know if you are interested but I'd like to make a point. It will just be a bit of reading. So, canon-wise the Imperial Guard is made up of billions of soldiers (somewhere between 1 to 999 billion). Add the Planetary Defense and you have maybe three times as much (probably). Then there's the Adeptus Astartes (1000 chapters with 1000 each - at 100 per cent there are 1 000 000 loyal space marines who are very good as a special force but badly utilized I think). Then there are the various Imperium-related factions (Mechanicus, Titan Legions, etc): I have no number for them but since these are more advanced units, let's add 1 billion for the regular faction and as a measure to calculate the Titan strength another 1 trillion. So there are between 1 to 6 trillion soldiers on the side of the Imperium of Man. The population of the Galactic Empire is around 100 quadrillion (25 per cent of the Star Wars galaxy inhabitants) according to the essential guide to star wars. They only recruit volunteers (unless shit would go wrong) but they are a heavily militarized society: Let's say between 0.5 to 1 per cent of the (human population which is somewhere around 60 quadrillion people): 600 trillion soldiers. That is the Galatic Empire's peace-time army. Where every soldier carries a rifle whose shot is equivalent to 83 tons of TNT. Who have the capability to travel from one end of the galaxy to the other in three days. Who can talk across the vastness of space in realtime. Whose basic spaceship weapons melt the crust of a planet with a single shot. Do you really think that the 40k Imperial Navy will get even close to bombarding one of their planets? One more thing: The Astronomicon does not spread to the Star Wars Galaxy. The Galactic Empire/Republic would win be default since they could actually go on the offensive while the Imperial Navy of 40k cannot. And Exterminatus is not unknown in Star Wars. I am pretty sure you know a planet in Star Wars that has been bombarded in that manner: A tropical paradise world known as Tatooine, 25 000 years before the battle of Yavin-4.

Genetically-engineered killing machines. The evil twin brothers of the aforementioned genetically-engineered killing machines, with a variety of evil powers, equally-evil goatees, and possibly being moving vectors of literal death. Clad in power armor. Extremely warlike genetically-engineered fungi able to grow bigger and stronger the more they fight. Manipulative space elves in possession of hyper-advanced technology and psychic powers, who can jump around while making shots that would make hardcore Quake players jealous. The aforementioned space elves' emo, bondage-obsessed cousins, who like to meet interesting people, shoot them a little, then torture them for eternity. Highly-advanced space pseudo-communists with actual Battlemechs and god-like firepower that rivals the Guard’s. Mutant space monsters that come in such huge swarms that you literally run out of ammo before your guns can chew through half of them, and that also come in a wide range of shapes and sizes that all want to dissolve you into goo. Daemons that have a billion tentacles to rape, kill, and/or burn you, in no particular order. And, of course, take your soul for fun times. Reptilian/insectoid abominations that kill you and mutilate your body for shits and giggles. Skaven with a natural entropy field that makes things fall apart just by being in their general vicinity. The guys that built ALL of your technology, and who have no qualms letting you die so their crap can be saved. Some unholy combination of the above.

Then there is the guardsman ideal, also from 1d4 Chan Ollanius Pius. LOOK AT THIS FUCKING GUARDSMAN. He's spent months fighting a grueling war in which his enemies are demigods allied with daemons, and now he's found himself in the closest thing to Hell he's ever known. He probably wasn't even supposed to get teleported up to the arch-traitor's battle barge in the first place, and just ended up in the wrong place at the worst possible time. Somehow he's survived horrors beyond comprehension to make his way to the very bridge of Horus' flagship. He saw a veritable angel call upon Horus to answer for his crimes, and he saw that angel die as messily as any guardsman. His Emperor - who he fervently believes is a god incarnate, even if he's not supposed to - lies mortally wounded, and Horus, perhaps, has taken a moment to gloat before he strikes the killing blow. His armor is slightly more effective than tissue paper, his weapon slightly more powerful than a flashlight. A single electrified claw from Horus' weapon is bigger than his entire body. He stands before a being infused by the dark gods with incalculable power, that can and will obliterate his soul with no more effort than it would take him to swat a gnat. Nothing he can do could possibly make a difference. He could run. He could turn his weapon on himself. He could give in to the insidious whispers that echo from the ship's corridors into his mind. Ollanius Pius does the duty his Emperor requires of him. He dies standing and holds the FUCKING line.

40K has a long history of laughing at itself even as it functions as a satire of oppressive systems of government and governmental incompetence. Indeed, it still does those things, the humour has just grown more subtle over the years, and mostly focuses on how ridiculously poorly governed the Imperium is, with the Adeptus Administratum forgetting about the existence of entire solar systems for a thousand years, and sending reinforcements to fight in wars that ended, one way or the other, generations before the soldiers being deployed were even born. That is a fair point - Sanctioned Psykers are a part of the Imperial Guard command structure and deployed alongside more regular units in battle on a regular basis. While nowhere near as powerful as Space Marine Librarians, they still offer considerable psychic support to the Guard at least on a par with the Force powers of the Jedi, even though the Sanctioned Psykers are not themselves especially capable combatants in more conventional forms of combat, and bring with them the Warp-related risks associated with psychic powers in the 40K setting.

Don't forget that the Imperial Guard also has SLY MARBO. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! The Catachans by themselves could take on any other army on this list. Just to survive they need to become expert warriors and survivalists. Though seriously when it comes to combined arms operations the Guard are way ahead of most of these other armies. Most objectives I saw the Clones attack the Guard would have pulverized with artillery long before sending in the infantry. They also have an excellent variety, and quantity, of support weapons that most of these other armies neglect such as heavy crew-served machine guns anti-armor cannons missile launchers and mortars. The previous video listed the lack of standardization as a weakness, but most of the time it is a strength as it means the Imperium can select units well suited to each mission from siege specialists like the Death Korps of Krieg to cold weather troops like the Valhallans and of course for jungle fighting they've got a horde of overly-muscled red bandana sporting their own Commisar killing madmen from Catachan.
@joshuawilliams90206 жыл бұрын
In combine arms I put the colonial Marines as better. They actually don't have to beg someone ( imperial navy) for aircraft. Heck each every platoon should have two super Sonic missiles trucks assign to them. And the m292 is actually better than the Earthshaker in every department. By a sizable amount too. Really as long as guard send likes only double or triple the numbers, my money is on the colonial Marines winning. Because of superior combine arms assets and doctrine.
@michaelkeha6 жыл бұрын
@@joshuawilliams9020 my dude unless you got some good sources to back is up the m292 only has a range advantage and a small caliber advantage which is debatable as I am willing to bet in terms of munitions quality it's chalk and cheese given 40K scale difference in terms of sheer fucking absurd toughness over the Basilisk and it's earthshaker cannon as for begging the imperial navy for aid guess the US Marines and Army have to beg the air force to do their jobs on bended knee to that's shity logic and you know it, add to that in terms of combined arms tactics the guard have specialists in every possible tactic in buckets can bring entire mechanised armies packing more heat than the colonial marines can on a squad to squad level never mind at the regimental level with troops that in other universes are the elite commandos and that's not counting the guards own special forces branches I don't think you quite understand the scale difference between the two sides here nor the quality of combatant difference in raw terms real world terms every imperial guardsman is basically a special forces operative and I mean that literally as the pdf is a planets marine corps, army, navy, Air Force etc the ones that get deployed into the wider galaxy are the best of the best from the pdf given additional training.

@@michaelkeha The colonial Marines technical manual is my source of m292. 30 kilometers to the Earthshaker 15, 152mm to 132mm Earthshaker, 6 rounds in ten seconds vs the manual reload rate of maybe 6 per minute. And IG doesn't operate any aircraft, only PDFs are imperial navy do. So if they need air support, they better hope the navy is willing to help, meanwhile the colonial Marines Operate their own air core and each platoon gets two drop ships and Two APCs. Meanwhile the IG need to hope that there another regiment nearby, are they aren't getting any kind of support. And IG aren't spec level trained... Except a few ( cadians and catachans mainly), the majority are giving nato level training. Most PDF are taught how hold fortifications. As an Imperial Guard commander I have watched your series on the imperial guard with a lot of interest. I did notice that you have focused on the sheer numbers and mostly the trench warfare that the guard were known for. However, this is not the only tactic that the guard have. Yes, numbers are the strength that the guard have. Now, instead of the trench warfare imagine how effective the guard would be as an assault force. This I can tell you is very effective. With vehicles such as the Valkyrie, your force becomes highly mobile and allows for your units to become fast attack. Often times denying armies that usually gain bonuses (in game mechanics) to their strength. I demonstrated this many times in game after game after game on the table top. The speed of an Imperial guard assault army (in game mechanics again) leaves opponents being caught off guard and throws the tried and true tactics of fighting guard completely useless as they have to quickly adapt. I stand behind the all female force of the Amazonian LXIX and the 77th Penal Legion so long as their pink cameo scheme stands out on the field of battle. May the Emperor protect you. Also, I have to say you have a wonderful grasp on the Orks. During a model build day at our local hobby shop, we decided to build some rather Orky buildings. Gathering a few bits and bobs I built an Ork teleporta. complete with gretchin singed mark on the base of the teleporta. the back story, was that the Warboss told his Wyrdboyz he wanted something that would take him from where he was standing and move him to someplace else on the battle field. The Wyrdboyz accepted the challenge begged for 24 hours for them to be able to come up with something and lo and behold they did it. The War boss asked to see it and asked how it worked. The Wyrd boyz said "Turn these knobs, flip these switches, then press this button and bamn you are half way across the battle field. Not happy with the response the Warboss asked again, How does it work. Finally the Wyrdboyz admitted they didn't know that it was a toaster the day before.

One fact about the Lasgun... it can punch through an Astartes in full armour. Once. The power packs can fire multiple 'low' energy shots or be ramped up to unleash a single high power shot that drains the entire energy reservoir.
@moriskurth6286 жыл бұрын
Yep, but even the most common combat setting used is comparable to modern day .50 BMG ammunition in terms of damage. If a lasbolt hits your arm, the blood vessels and other liquids basically flash-boil, leading to an entire section of your arm essentially exploding. The effect is not unlike holding onto a detonating grenade, an entire limb would just be gone. Also, the power packs of the lasgun themselves are every quartermaster's wet dream: They can be recharged from basic power outlets, like a plug in a wall, have solar cells on them that can recharge them by just letting them stand in the sun, and are able to transform heat into energy, meaning you'd just have to place a few of these packs around a campfire (or even *in* the fire itself) to regain ammo. And one more thing, lasgun technology is so widely available and easy to manufacture that there are Feudal Worlds (essentially pre-industrial worlds) that can produce them. And they are *ridiculously* cheap to make. The only thing cheaper would be Stubbers or Autoguns, which are basically 20th/21st Century firearms ala M1911, AK-47 or M16, and are often scratch-built by Hive Gangs or some Imperial Guard Regiments in the field.

Really?? I could see a hellgun doing that, but a regular lasgun?? Even in the "fuck everything I'm about to die" setting I don't think it could take down an Astartes, mmaaybe with a direct headshot or through a weak spot.
@mitchverr93306 жыл бұрын
hotshot/hellguns are just super energised lasguns, they all have the power to do it, its just a question of how much power you have to put into the weapon, it also dramatically reduces the service life of the weapon so most dont get that setting unless its needed, EG the death korps grenadiers are given hotshot lasguns with limited life span and high energy because franky, they dont expect to get the gun back anyway, might aswell let the guy go and massacre chaos space marines too xD

While this is a good list of the Advantages of the Imperial Guard, the Exterminatus should not be on this list. The Imperial Guard has now way of requesting or using an Exterminatus as only the highest level Inquisitor Lords are able to use them and they are loath to destroy worlds that could be won another day. It should be pointed out that the Exterminatus only destroys the biosphere with minimal damage to infrastructure. Also if an Inquisitor deamed an Exterminatus worth using the Imperial Guard would not be informed, some regiments may be redeplyed to another warzone before the Exterminatus is used but most will be left to fight on and be destroyed by it.

I adore 40k and love that’s it’s getting more exposure. But let’s be honest, between the over the top nature of the universe’s lore and the near rabid fan base, it really isn’t fair for the other factions presented in this series. But seriously, you guys did great work portraying each faction. Keep up the good work

If you use codex rules for weapons you find the lazgun is on par with a 50cal with better penetration

Well to put it into perspective, 40k has melee weapons, not as a status symbol but as stardard kit, they expect you to run out of ammo and have managed to make standard ammo powerpacks be rechargeable by sunlight or cooking them over fire, a gun that doesn't jam and comes with a tactical slot for those wanting to attach a flashlight for twinlinking. Combat doctrine for some regiments and penal legions can be as simple as, "forward, charge and attack", with a million bodies moving foward can be a tactic in it's own class.

The Cadia-pattern Lasgun was based off of a lasgun STC; this is why so many lasguns have a very similar design pattern by the time M42 rolls around.
