If I were developing a trap for pirates, I would redesign a campaign level, where your protagonist is hallucinating or traversing a surreal netherworld (like when Batman is on Scarecrow's fear toxin in Arkham Asylum, or the protagonist in a game like Silent Hill is having a supernatural vision unfold before him). As your character walks through the surreal imagery, you gradually start seeing puppets and pirates, resembling the ones from that "Lazytown" song, which will eventually start singing "You are a Pirate!". Once you reach the end of the level, the game will suddenly transition to an endless loop of that Lazytown video clip, rather than progressing to the next segment of the campaign. The player will be forced to restart the game. But from now on, every time the player tries to resume a play file, it will instantly go to the same endless loop of Lazytown, even if the players try creating a new save file to start all the way from the beginning. -If I wanted to be even more sadistic to the Pirates, I would have my pirated game infect their computer or gaming console with a virus, once they reach that point in the campaign. From now on, even if they start to play a different game or do other activities on their computer/console, the audio to "You are a Pirate" will play in the background. The only way someone would be able to get rid of it is to either do a complete memory wipe or turn it in to get fixed, saving his progress but also exposing himself as a pirate.- *More Recent Edit:* I originally wrote out the second part, to somewhat be "crossing the line twice". But now the part which I went back and did a strikethrough for is feeling even less funny now, in light of that recent infamous story with Doom Eternal's invasive Denuvo Anti-Cheat Software.
@mellamomellamo35127 жыл бұрын
That's just silly. Just because i downloaded a game that i wouldnt't even buy and not realy staling any palpalb emoney,i can get all my files fucked (including probably family videos,paid games,personal bank stuff...) JUST BECAUSE I DIDNT BUY A SHITTY GAME. Im sorry,but you are either sadistic or a total dumbass who acts as SJW while probably downloading movies and music (which is not bad,everyone does that).
@kryse48067 жыл бұрын
fun fact; since someone mentioned arkham asylum, and the game seems to be not on the list, I am obliged to mention that it also has a clever anti piracy measure, if you have a pirated version and glide in the game, batmans cape refuses to open and youll fall to your inevitable death
@xPrecisionx7 жыл бұрын
Earthbound had a funny antipiracy measure, the game would spawn ridiculous amounts of enemies that the player had to fight to get through. Not only that, but right at the end of game (if you somehow managed to get to that point), the game will just suddenly end and delete your save during the final boss' dialogue. Brutal.
@Kohaku90027 жыл бұрын
What makes that particular anti-piracy measure interesting isn't that it's there, but that it is the 5th and final anti-piracy measure in the game. The 1st one makes sure you aren't trying to play the cart on a PAL system. The 2nd one makes sure that you aren't running the game off a bootleg copy or cartridge copier. In order to see any further than that the rom itself has to be modified. The 3rd one spawns the ridiculous amounts of enemies, but not only that, would spawn said enemies in places where they shouldn't exist in the first place. The 4th anti-piracy measure is quite interesting in that it is only known that it exists but not what exactly it does. It checks the SRAM to see if more than 8kb is present, but it is still not know exactly what this anti-piracy measure does, only that it exists. The 5th and final check only occurs if the other 4 are defeated, which required actually modifying the rom in the first place to even see it. The game then deletes every save on the cartridge, then freezes after the initial battle and some dialogue from Pokey. Of course that's not even as evil as the anti-piracy measures that was drawn up for Earthbound Beginning's NES release before it was cancelled. Earthbound, later known as Earthbound Zero in fan circles, then finally released on Wii U as Earthbound Beginnings, had its rom dumped from a prototype NES cartridge. In order to get the rom to work on the NES emulator of the day, they modified a byte on the rom. This set off the anti-piracy measures. It turns out that the game was designed that if it detected that it was a bootleg, the cartridge/ROM would BRICK itself and render itself inoperable. That's right. BRICK.

I wonder what changes Nintendo made to Earthbound when it was re-released on the Wii U and 3DS virtual Consoles? Could removing these copyright protection measures (among other things) from the ROM be the reason why it took Nintendo so long to bring the game out?
@crunchyfrog5557 жыл бұрын
No, theres no chance that were the case. For a start, theres no evidence, but more importantly MOST old titles nintendo drag their heels over. Its just how nintendo are. When you factor in the recent revelation that they also put up others' cracked ROMs on their services, it debunks this point too.

And how many among those did buy the game in the end? I'd say the piracy is the best promotion a game could have. Because it does not require any money from anyone and ends up delivering the game to much more people than any distribution system ever could. Let's say the developer puts their own game on some torrent site and adds the link to his own shop. What would happen? The pirates will deal with distribution and promotion. Many will try to profit from it yet none will require payment directly from the game developer. If the game ends up being shit - the developer will probably gain a little "support" or no money at all, which is fair (go sell your shit to farmers, you lazy fucks!). But if the game is actually awesome - the dev could gain sales counting in millions with paying only for his shop hosting. Why? Because this world is not so shitty it wouldn't pay for a job well done. CD Projekt Red dudes sold almost 10 millions of copies of their game, 6 millions of which were sold within 6 weeks after they distributed the DRM-free GOG version, that ended up everywhere thanks to pirates. They literally proved that steam and other DRM systems are useless pieces of shit while pirates are much better in promotion and distribution. Good developers do not lose because of pirates. Shit developers do. And when you put your money into promotion (hi there deadmansky) and DRM (fuck you denuvo), instead of putting it all into testing and QA - you are a shit developer and must get bankrupt. Fuck you!

I would wager that piracy exists with younger gamers in the 13-28 age groups. When i found out about piracy when i was younger and was a pc gamer it was like i discovered some secret world where i could experience all these titles and not have to bug my parents for the money. I still did it up into my early 20's but as i've gotten older and as steam became the dominant digital platform and as i had more money to spend i just started buying the stuff i wanted and just forgetting about piracy all together. I haven't pirated a game in a very very long time because it's just easier to get what i want from steam with just a few button clicks. Fruit Cat what in wow do you have to buy for besides the monthly fee and that's because they are still making things for the game so I see why they make you each month. not only that but they have gone kind of free to play if you have enough in game gold. got to love those wow tokens.

Orbital Nexus true you don't but in some games it putting your self at a disadvantage. not all like wow you don't have to because the items you can get mean nothing to game play mounts and battle pets don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. and in other game it just makes the game more time consuming to get where other players who might have paid are at. but you are 100% correct with all that said you don't have to pay for any of it if you don't want. that just less of the game you will see when it comes to content and more maps in certain games.

I don't know if the story is true, but it could be. You may have gotten a copy with the anti-piracy code removed.
@JesterAzazel6 жыл бұрын
It's likely that pirates found a way around it. They often do, especially with a game as popular as The Sims. I remember Buu's Fury for GBA had a part where you'd try to get on a plane to the afterlife, but you'd get a message saying it won't run on your hardware. Someone simply removed that part of the code and released their version of the ROM, so you could bypass the anti-piracy measure as if it's not there at all. Even games that require you to be online so they can check and see if the copy has been purchased, there are patches that trick it into thinking it's a legitimate copy.
@LezGrl796 жыл бұрын
I was going to mention this one. I've always bought the sims games. But when sims 4 first came out I pirated it to see how it was. And I encountered the blur "bug". TheAnnabelleCrew this is the point of the system we have- it would be literally fascist to raid homes of pirates copying games illegally. Instead its illegal to sell it if you dont own it but its tolerated if you illegally download a torrented or cracked version. And in some cases people who might not be interested in your 60$ game will play part of it for nothing- then want to purchase it to endorse it when they otherwise might not have.

Fastforward to pay day, i buy the game and start a file on the legit copy, few days later internet goes down and i cant play the game because of fcking online checks, pirate copy worked flawlessly offline yet i cant play the copy i paid for without net access. In this case the anti piracy litterally only effects legit paying customers, i find this to be the case with 90% of the games i have pirated and then bought at a later date. Just find it wierd the pirates put out a more functional copy than the devs in most cases.

The cracks take time to make, and it takes time to discover what the anti-piracy measures are in the first place. Some people who would've been pirating the game may decide to give up on waiting and get a legal copy because of this. That actually was the case with Spyro 3, in fact; its sales numbers were significantly better than Spyro 2's two months in, in large part *because* of those measures.
@Uryel996 жыл бұрын
Sacred (the firstone) was also quite fun in its anti-piracy system. If you had pirated the game, each time you loaded an area, and that includes entering or exiting any building or cave, there was a chance the door would instead teleport you to a tropical island from which there was no way back. The workaround was to save EVERY TIME you were going through a door... And reloading if you ended on the island. That makes for a fine demo, and a pretty good incentive to actually purchase :)

You missed the point of anti-piracy measures. Most game sales are VERY, VERY frontloaded towards the release. And those are when you are going to get sales. The sales that happen after anti-piracy measures are cracked are at a time when a game is no longer selling many copies anymore anyway. Next time, don't try to talk about something you know jack shit about.

And on top of that, plenty of pirates buy a game AFTER they've pirated it to support developers... Games they would have otherwise not bought. One could argue that piracy can lead to an increase in revenue and that without piracy, there would just be a lot more people who simply DON'T buy a game because they can't really try it out. I've personally bought a whole ton of games after I tried them out through pirating. Like the complete Dawn of War collection +DLC , Minecraft, Starcraft 2 and its expansions, Prison Architect and many more. I know I wouldn't have bought many of these if I couldn't have tried them out before throwing money at em. But then you have games like the newest Simcity, which because of their effort to curb piracy, has hurt the game so badly, that it died out in months and is regarded as a failure... But Piracy is obviously to blame.
@jandorp81977 жыл бұрын
I would like to remind you that Steam has a refund policy in which you can always refund within 48 hours after purchase and if playtime is less than 2 hours. In a steam sale, I buy lots of games for not so much money, and try them all out, seeing if they run smoothly, have decent customizability and can be played properly in general.
@JannetFenix7 жыл бұрын
IKR? Those cretins and their excuses. Never in my life I met one person that bought game after playing pirate version. Hell, I met more people that bought game after watching letsplay of it, than those who even thought of bying it after pirating. And then there's paradigm, which maker literally went to each top torrent site leaving comments under seeds with his game, that he is glad people enjoy it, but he spent several years making it frame after frame. Even though some people did feel awkard and ashamed, the sales did not improve in any significant way. Can't say I've never pirated a game... but these were ones that back then were unobtainable to me in any way. Working copy of spellforce, after my disc was mutilated by my dog, or classics like I have no mouth and I must scream, too old to even have their physical copy outside of collector's stash.
@Zucadragon7 жыл бұрын
Well, seeing as you're great at ignoring examples that don't agree with you. That's an easy claim to make... Never EY? Right after I told you and gave you examples. I own over 100 steam games and plenty more outside of steam as well. Also realize that the refund policy only started around 2015. That's 2 years ago, not that long ago. Before 2015, Valve had a no-refund policy. Soooo, yeah, notice also that all the games I mentioned were from before 2015.. Not a coincidence I'd say, before 2015, why should I have supported games and developers I might not have enjoyed? Would you pay a restaurant for giving you a meal you don't enjoy? I'm happy that it's there, and I use it a whole lot to try out games now. But all those games before 2015, I don't feel bad about having pirated them first and then bought them. Also, I have no mouth and I must scream is a weirdly awesome game. If you like space rpg-ish games, you should totally take a look at Space Rangers 2, it's a brilliant game that too few people know about. Oh and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, a totally brilliant space ship tactics game, one of my all time favorites.

It basically worked as an adapter, you put the micro sim in your computer, put the games on and your kid has bunches of fun. Except as a kid, it was my parent's job to find the games and put them on, so when I saw a new anime style game I was super excited. Only to find that Chrono Trigger stops you early on if its a pirated copy. Damn, I was sad. I was enjoying it so much too.

I buy a mess-ton of games, but I'll still pirate them on occasion, and I believe I was justified in doing so. I've done this because: - I own a copy of the game and the disc was scratched, broken, or stolen. - I wasn't sure if the game would run on my device and a demo wasn't available (and people with the 'recommended' specs were having issues). In all of these cases, if the game ran, I bought a legitimate copy. - The developer flat out said he didn't care if people pirated the game. (Actually ended up buying multiple copies of that game in the end, but I DID pirate it first.) - I already own the game on one of my consoles and didn't think the game was good enough to merit giving the developer my money twice. - I didn't have access to the internet on my computer for the steam authentication or download, but I was able to pirate the game (which I owned) on my tablet and then move it to my computer. - I bought the game already on a digital format and the region locking kicked in when I travelled abroad. - The game was abandonware (I.E. - The game was made by a developer that is now defunct and was not bought out, no new copies are being produced or will be produced, and the only legally available copies are used physical copies.) - It wasn't legally available in my region via physical or digital distribution. Developers deserve money for their hard work, but there are legitimate reasons to pirate games that have nothing to do with a sense of entitlement beyond feeling entitled to make use of something that I paid for.

I don't even blame the people that live in countries where 60 bucks is a mess load of money - our company has employees in a third world country that earn like 300 bucks a month. Back there that is considered a really good job, comparable to government work or being a police officer. They can afford living in a house with a pool and 3 garages from that money, or they can buy a used console and like 1 to 3 games.

The very best anti-piracy protection is player base good will. If the player base likes your product and doesn't think they are being screwed over, then piracy will not be a big problem, as most people will be more then happy to pay or even keep paying for a good experience. Sadly many new gaming companies have forgotten this...... Oh and most of those games weren't ever worth the trouble to pirate......

@encycl07pedia Perhaps you missed the gist of my post. These are no better than DRM, they affect legit owners more than pirates just like DRM, and give the devs and publisher negative rep just like DRM.
@encycl07pedia-3 жыл бұрын
@@GlassDeviant I think these are better than DRM since DRM affects every legit owner and this stuff only affects perceived thieves. I'm not exactly sure how you'd get a false positive from a legit copy. That would be some very poor programming. DRM doesn't only infect games, either, but that's not as relevant. Side note: I haven't considered myself a gamer for a long time: Xbox 360 white is my most recent TV console and my most recent PC game is Civilization 5. Basically when the Xbox One (fucking stupid name) and PS4 came out with their Draconian Rights Management and the ever-increasing popularity of huge games (>10GB), Day 1 patches (can't be bothered to release a finished game), and a slew of microtransaction BS (in one way an anti-theft measure to squeeze out money), I have been severely disillusioned with gaming companies and games. I still play games, but they're all "old." Basically I'm pretty ignorant about more recent games because I don't want to jump through the hoops most companies make gamers jump through nowadays.

There's a fine line between "pirating" and "stealing" and I'm not sure anybody knows exactly where it is. Say I buy a book, and I enjoy that book. I tell my friend about this book and my friend gets interested in reading this book, so I lend him my copy of the book. He did not purchase it, but he got to enjoy it anyway. Is that "pirating?" Ditto a dvd/blu-ray. If I borrow a movie from my buddy next door, I get to watch it without paying for a copy. Did I "pirate" the movie? Here's one: manga and light novels. There are a ton of sites out there where people scan books, translate them, and upload them for others to read. They do that because these books do not have an English version. Now let's say that manga or light novel doesn't ever come out with an English version and/or doesn't even get published in this country, because many don't. So even if you wanted to, you couldn't buy it. As it would be therefore impossible for the publisher to make a sale to you in the first place, does that count as "piracy?" Note that I'm not arguing for one side or the other, I'm simply pointing out that there are no black/white answers; it's a massive gray area.
@SpaceCase1326 жыл бұрын
Well, with the examples you gave with the book and the DVD, that wouldn’t be necessary considered “pirating”. If you lend someone a copy of something for free for the sake of sharing a film, with the promise of said person returning your copy and potentially going out on their own to have their own copy, it’s just sharing. But if you make additional copies of that material and give it away for free (or for a heavy discount) without permission from the distributor or producer, THAT’s considered piracy. In regards to international trade with mangas or light novels, I don’t know enough on that topic to fully discuss it. But regardless, in many cases, I think it has a lot to do with intent.
