I'm a big fan of stealth games and so far my fav franchise is Commandos. While I'm not sure how big its influence was on the industry, it introduced stealth game play before Thief did, being released a few months before Thief was. Set in WW2, each Commandos game provides a variety of missions for your crew to accomplish, with each individual crew member having their own specialty (disguising, driving, water diving, etc.). All of the missions have your little crew infiltrate the heavily guarded enemy line, where getting spotted would get you completely overwhelmed. Since the game requires you to evacuate your entire crew safely after each mission you're often forced to take the stealth approach instead of guns blazing (which would mean 5 guys with handguns vs. 100 machine gunners or something).

Honestly, this is a great list, one of the best I've found on youtube. Even though I would rank Hitman series higher, I won't argue with your top 5. All great games, but you really nailed it with Thief being number one. Even twenty years later this game still feels so satisfying and fresh to play. Marvelous level design, brilliant atmosphere and story and some excellent choices from developers like the one to include sound as a integral part of the gameplay, all this things make Thief a true masterpiece of the genre. The sequels are brilliant as well (with the exception of that abortion that was Thief 2014).

That's right, in the late 90s Tenchu was the where I went to get my stealth fix on. I really loved the music from that game as well. I made analog recordings and then digitized them. I still listen to them to this day.

As much as I love thief it just did not age as well as Chaos Theory did, I picked up Chaos Theory as my first Splinter Cell game in 2016 11 YEARS after it's release and it still felt like a modern game (excluding the visuals of course) I think if you compare all of the greats of stealth Chaos Theory is really the best when you consider all aspects

I'd say Warframe should've been on here somewhere. The Mastery Rank 9 test (which is a stealth test for those who don't play) kept me far away from the "Qualify" option and on the "Test" option for about an hour before I looked up a guide.

You should also know a good majority of games at least id assume so, the first Stealth game released was in 1981, and it was Castle wolfenstein :Beyond castle wolfenstein, it was based on Nazi's plans that you had to sneak around and grab, you had to use disguises and hide to get too where you need, soon after it released James Bond took a similar approach to it, and boom just like herpies. it spreads :)

Metal Gear should have been #1. It's been sequels of sequels deep and STILL staying incredibly relevant. It's my favorite stealth game, I feel I should say. Adding a sandbox open free active world to Metal Gear was BRILLIANT. MGS5 was just the beginning of what they could do with that kind of play. I found it very unfair for the guards to give me 3D space to run in, instead of a set area or one camera screen.
