I chopped my hair off, only had a inch of hair on my head. I started going gray at 18. I was tired of paying the big bucks having it professionally dyed. I was only 36 at the time but it was time for me. I know this decision isn’t for everyone. You have to make that decision on your own time. Since seeing us gray ladies is not the norm, I am always stopped and given compliments on my gray locks. Good luck to all of the ladies and gentlemen that want to take the step to silver.

I am a retired hairstylist. I have helped many of my older clients transition to gray - white. None of them regretted the change. They were actually very happy I helped them. It is a long process, like you stated. In fact, I believe I was one hairstylist that encouraged them to change. I told them, " I know I can make more money coloring your hair and I could keep coloring your hair however I also believe if I know your hair would be very pretty not coloring it, I feel that is also a huge part of my job to give you that decision as well. " So, much to my surprise, they went with the transition. It's not easy but we took the time to do it. They were so happy with the results! Here I am at 72, I colored my hair a brown/red for years. I colored my own hair bc I knew how to do it. I just got sick and tired of coloring my hair. I slowly made the decision to go WHITE! I could see I was covering up the white hair my grandmother had! I made an appointment with one of my trusted hair stylists I have known for years after I allowed my hair to grow out to about an inch, after wearing a baseball cap for that period, I had all of the color cut off. Drastic??? It could have been however I have always been known to change my hair style all the time so I wasn't concerned. I did wear my baseball cap for awhile after that until I could actually put some style into it. I have nothing but compliments!!! My hair is beautiful white. I don't use blue or purple shampoo. It's natural. I use a good shampoo and conditioner with a mousse. I blow dry it or sometimes I actually use rollers! I know exactly what you are trying to say to others out there. There is no fun way to go gray! It's a long process OR in my case I did it bravely! Ladies listen!!! AGE WITH GRACE!!!

I am several months in to going gray, had some highlights added to help me through the transition. My sister is very negative about it, but I could care less. I’m turning 55 this year and I’ve exposed myself to enough chemicals in my lifetime, I’m done. She’s having a hard time because she is 4 years younger than me and treading the menopause waters. I just support her and give her love. It can be a tough transition… Your hair looks fabulous! Gives me renewed excitement about my journey to a full natural head of healthy hair!

This is one of the most helpful going-gray videos I've ever seen - thank you! I currently have longer than shoulder length silver hair that's pure silver around my face and crown and dark brown with silver in back. During the height of the Covid pandemic I stopped going to my hairdresser and decided to ditch the dye. It's taken over two years to grow out. I keep going for regular trims and my hairstyle is supportive. I'm still getting used to it but am embracing the fact that my hair is much healthier.

I tried growing my silver out during Covid. Went six months, then decided to color my hair again….BUT I then used only glazes, not permanent color. So now my hair is growing out fairly naturally! I think the white hairs really brighten my face, as harsh dark dye can make one look “old” like people say gray does.

I’m a year into going gray, just stopped chasing those roots and started letting it grow out. I have very long hair and didn’t want to cut it and I didn’t want to bleach it, causing loads of damage. So after a bit of time the roots don’t feel like they look as shocking as they do a couple months after you dye your hair, when you’re usually itching to cover those roots. My gray now takes up about 6” of my 18” long hair and I LOVE it now! ❤

I let it grow without a haircut. I feel that giving up a color and a length at the same time might be too overwhelming for me. Going grey is not the same as going from a warm blond to a cool blond for fun of it. It is an emotional, transformative experience.

So smart. I didn’t have the discipline to do that and cut my below-shoulder length hair to my chin for the duration of my transition (17 months). I didn’t feel like myself the whole time, and that grow out was a bitch. The only silver lining (sorry, couldn’t resist) was that my dedication to long hair was cemented by that experience.

I absolutely love your long hair. You were a big positive influence on my transition 4 years ago, now completed and also have long hair (curly and now healthier than ever before ). I did it natural. You're right about not telling anyone. The only person I told was my 80 yo aunt, she was very negative because she was still coloring. I got sooo many compliments from strangers. I loved the natural process because it looked like a cool bayaloge during my grow out. I had dark brown hair, and the grow out resulted in wonderful different colors of white, grey, black. I also had one friend who was intimidated by my choice, but must have inspired her because she grew hers out shortly after I did. I have felt very serious intimidation from my husband's X who is 70 (I'm now 65) and still dyes her hair, and its super thin and bad condition every time she sees me. You're right about after care. It took me about a year of watching going grey videos to finally do it. Was soooo tired of coloring every 4 weeks and very damaged hair. Now that it's completed, I still get wonderful compliments. Thank you for your videos.

Hi Katie. I hope that many people will absorb these great points. I had a mental list of cons for several years and hated that I was dyeing my black hair every 3 or 4 weeks because the silver and white was winning the war. Dyeing always made me self conscious and like a fraud. I knew my having drastically lighter hair would be shocking so I invested in stylish, inexpensive silver wigs. I would not wear them in public at first. This was an excercise for me. I needed to love how I looked with gray hair. I think the reason some women get negative comments is because they are unsure of themselves. If you bust into a room like a badass, people will say, Look at her. She's a Badass! Instead of "Did you miss your salon appointment?" There are So many ways to draw attention away from your demarcation line as your hair grows out. Use decorative barrettes, scarves, ponytails, wigs, earrings, etc. Most of all, Have fun. If you really don't like yourself gray, go back to coloring.

Hi, Cora - great advice! I totally agree with you about everything but especially about having confidence. If you have confidence that you've made the right decision by going gray, people are less likely to criticize or question you. And if they do, you won't be as hurt by it if you feel great about your choice to go gray.

I started greying at 15, been dyeing my hair since 24, I am now 67. After going on a very low carb diet I suddenly lost over 50% of my hair & its still falling out 3 months later. I've been allergic to most hair dyes, have been using hairprint for about 7 years. My hair still grows 1 inch /month. I now have 3 inches of very white hair, about 2 inches of reddish brown & the rest dark brown. I've decided to just let it grow, more concerned with the hairloss than color. My friends, who don't have allergies, do not want me to go grey. I've never been one to follow the crowd so that doesnt matter. I enjoyed this video, thanks !

I’m using the brown powder boldly product on the strip rather than dye…for events…and I’m happy with it. My least fav part is looking like I have hair loss because the white looks like my scalp. I made the decision to stop dying my hair when it was time to do the root touch ups in January of this year. It's been easy since I was usually wearing toques around others outside, but now it's a little more on my mind since the nicer weather is here. All in all, I'm comfortable with it but it's still an adjustment. My main issue is that I dyed my hair brown but the underlayer a magenta colour. So I've got a few colours going on... Any tips from anyone who had more than one colour before their decision to go grey naturally. Loving all these positive and supportive comments on this video, lovely to see 💞 P.S. I don't have Facebook so not sure where I would join a support group.

Use a color depositing conditioner like Dphue or overtone to blend the colors and gradually grow out your natural hair. I had multiple colors in my hair, I used permanent color with 10 volume developer to get it one color and I’m ditching permanent dye and switching to color depositing conditioner to blend the grey. I cut my hair into a shoulder length bob, I’m about 1/4 grey with mostly dark brown and tired of my hair being damaged from coloring it every 6 weeks! The color depositing conditioners have very high reviews and blend the grey so it’s not such a harsh line when roots grow out. I personally don’t want to chop all my hair off and feeling more ready to grow out my natural hair and looking forward to healthier hair!

I have a theory that hair dye and bleaching contributes to auto immune diseases. Most men don't colour their hair and auto immune diseases are much higher in women. Your hair looks lovely. I've been grey for a few years. I have hashimoto's thyroid disease which really affected my hair. I bought rhasoul clay before I saw your video so am going to try to grow my hair out With clay washing. Great video❤️

My sister and I both have autoimmune diseases. We had traumatic childhoods. I heard a psychologist online (I have forgotten his name) who studied autoimmune disease in families. He said that because women are more emotional, they are affected by the trauma in a greater way than even their brothers in the same family. (We have one brother and he does not have an autoimmune disease.) Both of our autoimmune symptoms started long before we colored our hair. We both had symptoms as teenagers, but could not put the puzzle together until much later. (Symptoms increase with age.)

For most of my life I thought my hair looked bad. I used box dye and would straighten them because they were frizzy and the more i did those things the worse they looked. I thought I couldn't grow them long and so I always cut them in ways I never really enjoyed. During lockdown I had the chance and time to learn about my own hair and I now have long, voluminous wavy hair that need low maintenance except for the dye. I'd like to stop that but ive only just started enjoying my nearly natural hair and I don't think it's yet the time for me, but when I'll decide to go for it I want to come back to all of these videos and really do my research.

My newly gray hair is so fun but needs way more conditioner than my colored hair. Even missing one application of deep conditioner makes my hair dry. I love the gray but the maintenance is important. I think gray hair is very pretty. Its incredibly liberating. Be careful with all blue and purple shampoos - my hair really got damaged by it. Or do a strand test bc it really stripped my hair.

@@milliem8051 Yes, the new texture of pure grey is sometimes coarse and dry. Hair dye definitely coats the cuticle and smooths it out. Its been 6 months since I went 100% grey and my hair is softer now. I also just recently tried "no poo" method and am still adjusting to it. Its not for everyone. You would need to read about it as it is extensive. Basicically you just stop using commercial shampoo and switch to clay/water, then rinse with apply cider vinegar. My hair is doing pretty well and I am wanting to stop putting shampoo into my scalp.

I’m struggling with the few greys I have but I’m tired of coloring n also scared of allergies now since I haven’t colored in a year . My color is mostly brown n my pattern is coming in very thin and throughout mostly at the crown . Looks like tiny silvers . Now if I do decide to color . Should I use a Demi? Or no?

That's a tough question - if you want to eventually go gray again (if you decide to color), using any kind of permament dye (whether it be semi-, demi-, or not) will still leave you with a demarcation line. Some women do say that they find it easier to grow out semi-permanent dye, but I'm not sure. That's just what I've heard.

I stopped box dyeing my very very dark brown hair about.. 6 months ago. I realized I was super drying my hair out and getting ugly flat color anyway. I also don’t want to spend the money on salon color because my hair grows fairly quickly and I would need root touch up every 6 weeks. Can’t afford that. So here we are- embracing the gray!! 😂 think I’m just going to go the cold turkey method but had a question- what do you suggest for calming down the crazy texture of the newer grays? I promise I haven’t plucked any out in months! 😂 but it’s so hard when one is just sticking straight out

It ended it when I told her that not only my husband was on board but that with me what you see is what you get and that I’m not dyeing my hair just because she doesn’t want to look at it. I think being 5 years older than me she just didn’t want to see a younger person going gray, it’s not my problem that she’s uncomfortable getting older 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m 58 and stopped wasting my time and money at the salon 5 years ago. There is no way I’d go back now 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tried it several times. The last time, I had the hairdresser cut it really short so I was grey immediately. Had it that way for 2 months but couldn't get used to it. Probably because my face is naturally red. The dark brown I have my hair dyed in now makes my face less red. Still, I'm almost 60 now, my face looks young but my neck and cleavage do not. So it looks just off and I'm thinking of letting it go grey again. Still undecided.

There's only one method to go gray. Let it grow off. I used Loreal Dark Blond spray tint to tone down my sparkling white roots as my blond grew off. I stopped using it when my roots were about 5" long. I still have a little blond pony tail to go yet. I could cut my hair to medium length and be all gray now. I need Joico Body Shake #3 now that I don't get the body from coloring. Many Joico products have been out of stock for 6-8 months in my region. I may go back blond if I don't find something that works on my fine, silky hair.

Yes! Blue shampoo is to cover brassy orange tones in brunette hair, and purple covers yellow tones in blonde or gray hair. There’s even a green shampoo by Redken that covers brassy red tones in dyed red hair! You just always pick the color that’s the opposite color on the color wheel of the color you’re trying to remove. Blue = opposite of orange for example

I made the mistake of telling my mom and my brother I was going to let my gray hair grow out. They both tried to talk me out of it. They told me how much older I was going to look and so on. I also told my daughter and my husband who were both for it. My daughter said that I should embrace my gray hair and my husband said I would be a silver fox. He still calls me his silver fox now that it is all grown out too. It was so hard growing it out because I had been coloring it my natural hair color which was dark brown. So while it was growing out I would use a hair color spray to go down the middle of my head to cover the gray. That was where it looked the worst. Once all my bangs were grown out it didn't look so bad anymore. Before I knew it I had a full head of silver/gray hair.

Is there anyone in the comments who hates the way they look blonde or with light colored hair that has gone gray? I'm 42, been bleaching (2-3 times a yr only) and dyeing my hair since I was 14. I started finding gray hairs at 23 and have been adamant about never seeing my natural color. My natural hair is brown with reddish tones. I was blonde as a very young child but anytime I've bleached my hair and had to keep it blonde for a day or 2, I've hated it. I think it washes out my skin tone and makes me look ill. I have decided to stop bleaching my hair all together but I'm still going to be using vegan hair dye in my usual colors. I always have crazy colored hair, pink, purple, blue, red, I've had every color. Going gray and just being able to exist without dyeing it sounds amazing but like I said at the beginning, I hate the way I look with light hair. Just curious if anyone else felt this way and discovered that they actually like it now. Thanks for listening 🩷

As I'm not a redhead (or blonde) myself, it's a bit hard to talk about it without some firsthand knowledge. All I can tell you is that my Mom is a natural redhead and her gray hair is gorgeous -like a cinnamon sugar color. And - in general - it's a bit easier for women with red or blonde hair to go gray as the demarcation line is not so strong. Naturally blonde and red hair tend to blend easier with the gray as it grows in.

I’m not sure what you mean. Do you mean you don’t have any gray hair and you want it? Nobody is too young to be gray - I’ve met women have gotten gray hair as early as five years old, and I was probably fully gray by 30.
